{"id":182766,"date":"2026-04-07T09:00:41","date_gmt":"2026-04-07T07:00:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.goodthingsguy.com\/?p=182766"},"modified":"2026-04-07T11:41:35","modified_gmt":"2026-04-07T09:41:35","slug":"life-in-lesothos-historic-kome-caves","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.goodthingsguy.com\/lifestyle\/life-in-lesothos-historic-kome-caves\/","title":{"rendered":"Life in Lesotho\u2019s Historic Kome Caves"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2 id=\"article_subtitle\" class=\"article__subtitle \">The dwellings were occupied in the early 1800s by families fleeing the Lifaqane wars.<\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em>Lesotho (07 April 2026)<\/em> &#8211; Ntefane Ntefane lives high in the sandstone cliffs of rural Lesotho.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">\u201cI was born in this house in 1983,\u201d he says, seated next to a round, mud-plastered dwelling carved into the hillside. \u201cI have never lived anywhere else.\u201d<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>While other families have long since moved out and built modern homes, Ntefane remains the last resident of the historic Kome Caves, located in the Berea district, 25km east of Teyateyaneng town.<\/p>\n<p>The caves, now a tourist attraction, are managed by the local Ha Kome villagers in partnership with the Lesotho Tourism Development Corporation.<\/p>\n<p>The caves were occupied in the early 1800s by families fleeing the Lifaqane wars and famine. Also known as the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mfecane\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mfecane<\/a>, Lifaqane was a period of intense warfare, forced migration, and state formation in Southern Africa roughly from 1815 to 1840.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_182771\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-182771\" style=\"width: 882px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-182771\" src=\"https:\/\/www.goodthingsguy.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/kome-caves-ls-gu-bc-dsc1286-huge.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"882\" height=\"588\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.goodthingsguy.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/kome-caves-ls-gu-bc-dsc1286-huge.jpg 882w, https:\/\/www.goodthingsguy.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/kome-caves-ls-gu-bc-dsc1286-huge-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.goodthingsguy.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/kome-caves-ls-gu-bc-dsc1286-huge-768x512.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 882px) 100vw, 882px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-182771\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Ha Kome caves are managed by the local community in partnership with the Lesotho Tourism Development Corporation.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h3>The last resident<\/h3>\n<p>Ntefane lives alone in the cave.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">\u201cThere were five of us in our household,\u201d he says. \u201cBut my parents and my three siblings have all passed away. I am the only one left.\u201d<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>His father, Lebaka Ntefane, and a generation before him lived in the same cave house. Then interior is divided according to clan lineage, he explains, these being the Bataung, Batlokoa and Basia families, who once shared the caves.<\/p>\n<p>Their descendants have moved out, building modern homes in the nearby village of Ha Kome.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">\u201cI don\u2019t have money to build up there,\u201d says Ntefane. \u201cBut even so, I am comfortable here.\u201d<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>His life revolves around livestock \u2013 herding animals, rotating grazing areas, fetching water, and tending to his fields.<\/p>\n<p>There is no electricity in the caves. At night, he relies on candles for light and cooks on a Primus stove. \u201cI am used to this life.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_182772\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-182772\" style=\"width: 882px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-182772\" src=\"https:\/\/www.goodthingsguy.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/kome-caves-ls-gu-bc-dsc1344-huge.jpg\" alt=\"Lesotho Caves\" width=\"882\" height=\"588\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.goodthingsguy.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/kome-caves-ls-gu-bc-dsc1344-huge.jpg 882w, https:\/\/www.goodthingsguy.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/kome-caves-ls-gu-bc-dsc1344-huge-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.goodthingsguy.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/kome-caves-ls-gu-bc-dsc1344-huge-768x512.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 882px) 100vw, 882px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-182772\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Ntefane Ntefane is the last resident of the Kome Caves.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h3>A refuge from war<\/h3>\n<p>According to local tour guide Motlalepula Kome, around 1824, Teleka Kome fled the Lifaqane wars in Matatiele in South Africa\u2019s Eastern Cape with his brothers, Sootho and Makhokolo.<\/p>\n<p>Initially, they settled in open areas, but constant threats, including attacks and cannibalism, forced them to seek better protection.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">\u201cThey first stayed in a nearby village above the caves called Ha Mateka,\u201d Kome says.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>They then moved to Malimong Ha \u2018Matjotjo. \u201cWhile at Malimong Ha \u2018Matjotjo, they were close to caves used by cannibals. They then left and came to settle here at Ha Kome, inside these caves.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">\u201cThey built these round houses, which we call Libopi, shaped like ovens,\u201d Kome says. \u201cThey hid here.\u201d<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Local belief is that Teleka Kome, a traditional healer, used medicinal charms to protect the settlement.<\/p>\n<p>Over time, others joined the settlement, including Moteletsane Khut\u0161oane from Thaba Nchu in the Free State, and later Ntefane\u2019s grandfather who is also his namesake from Mokhotlong. He was fleeing the fight between Basotho founder Morena Moshoeshoe I and Batlokoa led by Manthatisi.<\/p>\n<p>The caves also bear older markings of human presence. Faint rock paintings, believed to have been made by San people, remain on the cave walls.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">\u201cThey were the first people to live here,\u201d says Kome. \u201cThey hunted, and when the animals became scarce, they moved on but left these paintings behind.\u201d<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<figure id=\"attachment_182773\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-182773\" style=\"width: 882px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-182773\" src=\"https:\/\/www.goodthingsguy.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/kome-caves-ls-gu-bc-dsc1297-huge.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"882\" height=\"588\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.goodthingsguy.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/kome-caves-ls-gu-bc-dsc1297-huge.jpg 882w, https:\/\/www.goodthingsguy.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/kome-caves-ls-gu-bc-dsc1297-huge-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.goodthingsguy.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/kome-caves-ls-gu-bc-dsc1297-huge-768x512.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 882px) 100vw, 882px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-182773\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A traditional stone mill that was used by the cave dwellers to grind grains into fresh flour.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h3>Community survival<\/h3>\n<p>The Ha Kome caves is managed by the local community in partnership with the Lesotho Tourism Development Corporation. A committee oversees operations, including tour guides and security staff.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">\u201cThe money we collect helps the community,\u201d says Kome. \u201cIt is used for development and to assist families during times of funerals.\u201d<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Part of the income is also shared among five descendants of the original cave dwellers, including Ntefane. \u201cSometimes we receive M200 (M1 = R1), sometimes M500, sometimes M800,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">\u201cIt depends on how many tourists come that month. I know I will not go hungry because of it \u2026 I can buy soap, paraffin, candles and all the things I need at home,\u201d he says.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The community also uses the tourism income to maintain the steep, rocky road to the caves, a job they do entirely by hand, according to Kome.<\/p>\n<p>Workers earn about M100 a day. \u201cMany visitors turn back when they see how bad it is,\u201d says Kome. \u201cSmall cars cannot reach the site.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kome says another challenge is the lack of electricity, which discourages overnight stays. \u201cPeople want to charge their phones, to use their devices,\u201d she says. \u201cWhen they can\u2019t, they leave.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Despite these challenges, the caves continue to attract visitors.
