While in South Africa, Boan Venter had his Edinburgh Rugby teammates answering everything with “lekker” in a playful Afrikaans lesson.
Johannesburg, South Africa (23 March 2026) – During their visit to South Africa for their clash against the Lions in the United Rugby Championship, Boan Venter decided to give his Edinburgh Rugby teammates a taste of local flavour by teaching them some Afrikaans.
From commenting on the grounds to chatting about the scoreboard, the Edinburgh players tried to keep up, laughing along as they stumbled through understanding what was being asked.
He asked them questions like, “What’s your favourite thing you’ve done since being in SA?” and “How was training in the sun today?” And the answers came rolling in… almost all the same: “Lekker!” Whether it was good sleep, the sunny weather, or training on the pitch, Venter’s teammates discovered that in South Africa, “lekker” really is the default answer for everything.
All laughing at the quirks of their new vocabulary and trying to answer the questions in a language they don’t understand, the players embraced the challenge with good humour.
It was all smiles and laughter, proving that even in professional sport, there’s always room for fun.
