Several little ones at Groote Schuur Hospital will now be nestled in the warmest, softest knits – each piece handmade with love and delivered in precious memory of Adele and Basil’s granddaughter.
Cape Town, South Africa (30 March 2026) – There is something deeply moving when the weight of something as difficult as loss brings people together to find ways to honour those they have loved and lost.
After Adele and Basil lost their precious granddaughter to a brave battle, they returned to the place of her final moments – not just to mourn, but to honour her memory by offering a gesture of extraordinary kindness
Adele and Basil recently visited the neonatal unit at Groote Schuur Hospital with a beautiful donation of handmade knitted items to bring comfort to little ones.
“Often, it’s the quietest acts of kindness that leave the deepest impact. This incredibly generous gesture was inspired by their own experience of loss, having said goodbye to their precious granddaughter here,” the Groote Schuur Hospital Trust shared in a post.
Basil, responding to that very post shared online, revealed that they lost their granddaughter two years ago on his and Adele’s wedding anniversary.
“So, visiting Groote Schuur hospital on 17 March this year was a “no-brainer” for us. The loss of our granddaughter will always be with us and in a bitter-sweet way, the PERFECT way to start off our anniversary this year.”
Basil assured that he and Adele both hope to continue supporting the hospital in future, for as long as they’re able to do so.
The nurses and staff were deeply moved and honoured by the heartfelt gift, which will make a meaningful difference and wrap several tiny tots in the warmest and softest knitted treasures.
“Thank you for turning your love into comfort for others. We are truly grateful.”
