Navigating an Autism diagnosis can feel like a lonely journey, but our reigning Miss SA, Qhawekazi Mazaleni, is using her platform to ensure families don’t have to walk it alone.

Johannesburg, South Africa (07 April 2026) – April is Autism Acceptance Month. It is a month dedicated to celebrating neurodiversity, understanding the strengths and honouring the challenges faced by those on the spectrum.

Having received numerous messages from families seeking guidance on how to access support for their children, our reigning Miss South Africa, Qhawekazi Mazaleni, is using her platform to help others navigate Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).

Far more than just a pageant queen who wears our national crown, Qhawekazi is also a qualified speech therapist, educational activist and a self-published children’s author and a Master’s student in speech pathology, specialising her research in the field of autism.

“What I love most about this month is that the name has been changed from ‘Autism Awareness Month’ to ‘Autism Acceptance Month’, which moves towards genuine acceptance and support for autistic children and adults,” Qhawekazi shares in a recent post.

She recognises that our country still has a very long way to go in terms of ASD information availability, partially because of cultural differences, which result in taboos.

“So many children remain isolated or undiagnosed because their behaviour is viewed as difficult due to misinformation. I want to use this community to make a difference where we can.”

Qhawekazi will now be using her social media platforms to launch a four-part series covering how to get an autism diagnosis, getting support systems like speech or occupational therapy, communication tips and advice on how to navigate the public schooling system for children who are diagnosed with autism.

She’s also open to answering further questions on the topic, inviting her followers to respond with their questions in the comments section or DMing her.

“I will try to include the answers in each of the videos that I make. If I personally can’t answer it, I will make sure to either do research or try to get in contact with a clinician. Please let me know any specific information you might want to know as well. There is no one-size approach to supporting neurodiverse children, but I really hope this series will help a family navigating their journey.”

Beyond the crown lies a heart dedicated to every child’s voice. Her post has received love and earned respect from her online audience and, more touching, brought hope to those navigating a widely misunderstood journey.

As Qhawekazi puts it, one of the best ways to make information available is to start the conversation. We applaud her for using her platform for such a remarkable source of help and a force for good.

Sello, who carried his injured dog 15km to save her life, now has some stability, and Option is bouncing around happily on three legs!

Free State, South Africa (7 April 2026)Their story showed us all what love between a man and his best friend looks like. In October last year, Sello walked 15 kilometres, with Option wrapped up in his arms, to meet the team from Virginia SPCA on the road outside Odendaalsrus.

Option had been struck by a speeding car. With his last few rand spent on airtime, Sello made the call to save her. After being turned away by other shelters and organisations who had no capacity to help, the Virginia SPCA finally answered. They met him on the road, and took Option in.

The story blew up across South Africa. Support and donations poured in. Weeks later, Sello visited Option at the SPCA with tears in his eyes. That reunion moved thousands more. We were all crying snot en trane.

It’s almost six months since that moment happened. This week, the SPCA shared that Sello and his beloved Option paid them a visit, and they’re doing well. The picture (and video in the comments section linked here) are everything.

Photo Credit: Virginia SPCA, Free State, South Africa

Option has made a full recovery. She lost a leg in the accident, but this little three-legged doggie doesn’t seem to have gotten the memo that life is supposed to be harder. She’s doing just fine. Sello is doing well, too. A previous update shared that he is employed through to the end of May – stability makes all the difference for a man who gives everything he has to the ones he loves.

The Virginia SPCA playfully asked the public to guess who the two mystery guests in their post were. Hundreds of people, who never forgot their names or their story, flooded in with warmth and recognition.

“We could never forget Sello and little Option.”

“Two champions!”

“Brave Option with his hero Sello.”

“Sello and Option attached by special love chain”

“Even Hollywood could not dream up such an incredible story of love, resilience and compassion.”

From heartfelt deliveries for “little warriors” in hospitals to sweet surprises for school kids, our local charities proved this Easter that the smallest gestures often hold the most love!

South Africa (07 April 2026) – Easter is a season of hope and renewal, and this year was truly special – where various charities and kind hearts brought this goodness and joy to those who need it most through the power of caring communities, far and wide!

The Warren and Arlene Lucas Foundation

This Easter, the Warren and Arlene Lucas Foundation visited Elsies River to deliver Easter eggs, sweets, and snacks to two local ECD centres. While it may seem like a simple gesture to some, it brought pure joy to the little ones.

“Those moments of joy, excitement, and connection… they matter. Because community is built like that. Not in grand gestures, but in showing up, in giving what you can, and in doing it together,” the team shared.

Children’s Hospital Trust

At the Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital, little patients, too, were treated to the sweetest Easter gifts, generously donated and delivered by Mariaan Mackenzie and her wonderful friends.

The little warriors were delighted upon receiving their individual hampers, which brought so much joy into their hospital stay.

Heart in Hands Food Bank

The Hearts in Hands Food Bank team, during their many Easter egg drop-offs, popped in to share a little Easter community love with the Wentworth Victims Unit. A place where compassion quietly meets courage, every single day.

“This incredible team has spent years standing in the gap for those facing some of life’s most difficult moments – offering comfort, counselling, and a safe space to be heard. Many of these selfless individuals volunteer their time and hearts, ensuring that no one in need is ever turned away,” the Food Bank team said.

Hearts in Hands was happy to contribute in a small way to the meaningful work the Unit does by giving a few hundred marshmallow eggs that they will put directly into the hands of children in the community.

Angels’ Care Centre

Through the amazing generosity of the public, the Angels’ Care Centre was able to share the magic of Easter across all of its programmes.

“Our Preschoolers had the best time hunting for treats. Our After-School learners enjoyed a sweet reward after their hard work. Our Saturday Feeding Programme children (all 350 of them) received an extra dose of joy.”

For this charity, seeing the smiles on the children’s faces was everything and reminded them of the power of a caring community.

These are just a few of the many special do-gooders who chose to celebrate this Easter with others in mind. Thank you to all these organisations, communities, and supporters for playing your part in putting a little more love into the world – exactly where it’s needed most!

The dwellings were occupied in the early 1800s by families fleeing the Lifaqane wars.

Lesotho (07 April 2026) – Ntefane Ntefane lives high in the sandstone cliffs of rural Lesotho.

“I was born in this house in 1983,” he says, seated next to a round, mud-plastered dwelling carved into the hillside. “I have never lived anywhere else.”

While other families have long since moved out and built modern homes, Ntefane remains the last resident of the historic Kome Caves, located in the Berea district, 25km east of Teyateyaneng town.

The caves, now a tourist attraction, are managed by the local Ha Kome villagers in partnership with the Lesotho Tourism Development Corporation.

The caves were occupied in the early 1800s by families fleeing the Lifaqane wars and famine. Also known as the Mfecane, Lifaqane was a period of intense warfare, forced migration, and state formation in Southern Africa roughly from 1815 to 1840.

The Ha Kome caves are managed by the local community in partnership with the Lesotho Tourism Development Corporation.

The last resident

Ntefane lives alone in the cave.

“There were five of us in our household,” he says. “But my parents and my three siblings have all passed away. I am the only one left.”

His father, Lebaka Ntefane, and a generation before him lived in the same cave house. Then interior is divided according to clan lineage, he explains, these being the Bataung, Batlokoa and Basia families, who once shared the caves.

Their descendants have moved out, building modern homes in the nearby village of Ha Kome.

“I don’t have money to build up there,” says Ntefane. “But even so, I am comfortable here.”

His life revolves around livestock – herding animals, rotating grazing areas, fetching water, and tending to his fields.

There is no electricity in the caves. At night, he relies on candles for light and cooks on a Primus stove. “I am used to this life.”

Lesotho Caves
Ntefane Ntefane is the last resident of the Kome Caves.

A refuge from war

According to local tour guide Motlalepula Kome, around 1824, Teleka Kome fled the Lifaqane wars in Matatiele in South Africa’s Eastern Cape with his brothers, Sootho and Makhokolo.

Initially, they settled in open areas, but constant threats, including attacks and cannibalism, forced them to seek better protection.

“They first stayed in a nearby village above the caves called Ha Mateka,” Kome says.

They then moved to Malimong Ha ‘Matjotjo. “While at Malimong Ha ‘Matjotjo, they were close to caves used by cannibals. They then left and came to settle here at Ha Kome, inside these caves.”

“They built these round houses, which we call Libopi, shaped like ovens,” Kome says. “They hid here.”

Local belief is that Teleka Kome, a traditional healer, used medicinal charms to protect the settlement.

Over time, others joined the settlement, including Moteletsane Khutšoane from Thaba Nchu in the Free State, and later Ntefane’s grandfather who is also his namesake from Mokhotlong. He was fleeing the fight between Basotho founder Morena Moshoeshoe I and Batlokoa led by Manthatisi.

The caves also bear older markings of human presence. Faint rock paintings, believed to have been made by San people, remain on the cave walls.

“They were the first people to live here,” says Kome. “They hunted, and when the animals became scarce, they moved on but left these paintings behind.”

A traditional stone mill that was used by the cave dwellers to grind grains into fresh flour.

Community survival

The Ha Kome caves is managed by the local community in partnership with the Lesotho Tourism Development Corporation. A committee oversees operations, including tour guides and security staff.

“The money we collect helps the community,” says Kome. “It is used for development and to assist families during times of funerals.”

Part of the income is also shared among five descendants of the original cave dwellers, including Ntefane. “Sometimes we receive M200 (M1 = R1), sometimes M500, sometimes M800,” he says.

“It depends on how many tourists come that month. I know I will not go hungry because of it … I can buy soap, paraffin, candles and all the things I need at home,” he says.

The community also uses the tourism income to maintain the steep, rocky road to the caves, a job they do entirely by hand, according to Kome.

Workers earn about M100 a day. “Many visitors turn back when they see how bad it is,” says Kome. “Small cars cannot reach the site.”

Kome says another challenge is the lack of electricity, which discourages overnight stays. “People want to charge their phones, to use their devices,” she says. “When they can’t, they leave.”

Despite these challenges, the caves continue to attract visitors. GroundUp’s visit coincided with a visit by a couple from Australia.

But the future of the site depends on whether interest in the caves can be sustained and whether infrastructure improves.

For now, life at Ha Kome exists in a delicate balance between preservation and change.

When the petrol price hits hard, you’ve gotta get creative, and Themba Robin has just taken “fuel-efficient travel” to a hilariously new level!

Johannesburg, South Africa (06 April 2026) – Tough times are inevitable, but if there’s one thing about South Africans, it’s their ability to find humour in almost any situation, inviting everyone to join in the laughter.

Many are aware that there’s been a lot happening abroad in the political sphere, and we empathise with those severely affected by the global conflicts unfolding in our time.

Recently, South Africa has felt the impact of heightened risks in global energy markets, leading to record-high fuel prices and a shared sense of unease among us all.

But as mentioned, we manage to cope with the doom and gloom through humour. Giving us the giggles recently was Comedic Content Creator, Themba Robin, who recently posted a hilarious skit showing his creative new approach to e-hailing without the stress of needing fuel.

In the amusing video, he’s seen pushing a wheelbarrow with Uber branding and stopping to pick up his next client for their ride, who was more than happy to hop in and be pushed to their destination.

“Petrol prices got us doing what we need to do to get by,” Themba shared playfully in the post’s caption.

It was witty, relevant and had the people laughing out loud!

“Do we pay in steps?” Marilet Swanepoel hilariously asked.

“The way he’s checking the number plate before he jumps in,” observed Siobhan Noelle Roy.

“Going to build it tomorrow to pick up a wheelbarrow,” Garret Van Der Walt joked.

The post has hit over one million views on Facebook, and there’s no wonder why! Thank you for the clever solution (hopefully one we won’t have to resort to) and, most importantly, for bringing us plenty of laughs when we needed them most, Themba.

Anele Mdoda and Frankie got the inside scoop on A24’s most anticipated 2026 film, The Drama, ahead of its cinema release.

Johannesburg, South Africa (06 April 2026) – Hollywood’s finest, Zendaya and Robert Pattinson, sat with Anele and Frankie.

The exclusive interview took place ahead of the release of The Drama, one of the most anticipated films of the year, which hit cinemas on 3 April. And if the storyline is anything to go by, audiences are in for an emotional rollercoaster, as a perfect couple’s wedding week takes an unexpected and dramatic turn.

But before the film even landed on the big screen, Anele and Frankie made sure to bring their signature energy to the moment and they didn’t just stop at the questions. Fully leaning into the theme, the duo showed up dressed for the occasion, channelling the film’s wedding aesthetic in a way that added a fun twist to the interview.

It’s that mix of humour and creativity that made the sit-down feel less like a formal press tour and more like a conversation. And let’s be honest, sharing a screen with stars like Zendaya and Robert Pattinson? That’s a moment.

Beyond the glitz, it’s also a big win with Anele and the Club being the only South African platform to land the interview. And with The Drama set to arrive in cinemas, this might just be the perfect way to get a feel for what’s coming. So grab your popcorn and enjoy the show.

If you’re keen to catch all the moments, the laughs, and the behind-the-scenes energy, you can watch the full interview via the link here.

The words were few, but the tears and hugs said it all. One Motherwell police captain received a send-off fitting for a hero who gave 40 years to his community and office.

Motherwell, South Africa (06 April 2026) – Some of our most hardworking and dedicated public servants don’t get nearly enough credit for the hours and tireless efforts they put in on the job to serve communities. We rely on them in various ways, sometimes to ensure our very safety and protection.

After serving with loyalty and heart in the national police force for 40 years, one Motherwell officer received a deeply moving tribute this week. In a touching video shared by his sister, Marlene Meintjes, the veteran member is seen walking out of the station for the final time, shaking hands with his colleagues.

Fighting back tears, he proceeds to walk towards each of the station’s staff members standing in a line, everyone of them holding a yellow flower to present to him in honour of the remarkable work he’s done throughout the years and the impact he’s had on them.

There may not have been many words during that emotional farewell walk, but the long hugs and tears spoke volumes. They honoured a man who didn’t just wear a uniform or merely fulfil a job, but a man who truly served and touched lives.

“Watching him walk out of Motherwell SAPS for the last time, surrounded by the respect of his colleagues, brings so many emotions. Thank you for your bravery, your sacrifice, and for always being a hero – not just to the community, but to our family,” shared Marlene, capturing the dedication of her brother.

A speech delivered by one of the senior members described the outgoing Captain as someone who played an irreplaceable role in training staff and uplifting the office. He was described as a man who had possessed humility, patience, knowledge and skill that helped guide and pave the way for all members he’d taken under his wing. He was thanked for the change he made, his willingness to assist and for leading by example.

The video has garnered over 926K views on Facebook, with many viewers touched by the emotional reaction of the Captain’s colleagues.

“What a beautiful speech, it brought tears to my eyes. It looks like they were a good team, more like a family. Everyone is heartbroken because the captain is leaving his ship, but they know that they can rely on him if they need him. I’m so happy that I could see this. Congratulations, Captain, on 40 years,” one person commented.

And we can’t help but share similar sentiments. The Captain leaves behind a strong team that he’s helped mould, ready to serve and protect Motherwell in Gqeberha. We celebrate and salute his invaluable impact, and wish this legend a restful, well-deserved retirement.

Kuhle Kooks turns the long weekend into a full-on breakdown, and it hits home, highlighting some relatable long weekend moments.

South Africa (02 April 2026) – If you’ve ever treated life like a full-on sporting event, then Kuhle Kooks is definitely your kind of commentator.

The content creator, known for turning everyday moments into hilarious pre- and post-match interviews, is back at it again. This time tackling the long-awaited Easter long weekend. And honestly, it’s the kind of analysis we didn’t know we needed.

In true fashion, the “pre-match interview” breaks down the long weekend. The different foods South African will be eating and what everyone will be getting up to.

Gone are the days when raisins did their job in the hot cross buns. Now, it’s all about the upgraded squad, and that’s the chocolate chip hot cross buns stepping in and completely taking over the starting lineup.

And that’s exactly why the video is hitting home. Social media users are loving the accuracy, with many seeing themselves backing up the new and upgraded flavour.

It’s this kind of humour that makes Kooks’ content stand out. Taking the most normal, everyday experiences and flipping them into something that feels like a press conference after a major match.

As the Easter weekend approaches, whether you’re team raisins or fully backing the chocolate upgrade, just know this is one debate that’s far from settled.

A light-hearted video of a “quick sniff” at the pump has social media users laughing and sharing their own fuel struggles.

South Africa (02 April 2026) – With fuel prices continuing to climb, South Africans are once again doing what they do best and finding humour in the struggle.

A hilarious video making the rounds on social media has perfectly captured the mood, thanks to content creator Kristy and a familiar face, petrol attendant Bheki. The skit, which was originally filmed a while back but recently reposted, still feels very much relatable. The video, first shared on TikTok back in 2022, where it racked up over a million views, has once again gone semi-viral after being reposted on Instagram. And it’s easy to see why.

In the clip, Kristy pulls up and asks for R300 worth of petrol, obviously nothing unusual there. But instead of filling up the tank, she leans in for a quick sniff and calls it a day. No fuel.

It’s funny, but it hits home. Especially for drivers who know that these days, even a small amount of petrol feels like a luxury.

Social media users didn’t hold back in the comments either, with many joining in on the joke. One user said

“You can’t even sniff petrol anymore, you can only look at it.”

Others shared how the video perfectly sums up their own reality at the pumps.

For Kristy, who is part of a passionate car community that depends heavily on fuel for events and weekend drives, the repost felt timely. And clearly, it struck a nerve.

While rising fuel costs remain a serious concern, moments like these show how humour continues to be a coping mechanism. It may not fill the tank, but it definitely makes the journey a little lighter.

South Africa’s wheelchair basketball team advanced to the semi-finals of the IWBF Africa Championships, keeping their hopes alive for a spot at the World Championship.

Angola (02 April 2026) – South Africa’s national wheelchair basketball team, the Sasol AmaWheela Boys, are making their mark on the continental stage after securing a place in the semi-finals of the IWBF Africa Championships in Angola. Guided by head coach Siphamandla Gumbi, the team delivered a commanding 58–46 victory over the host nation.

Reflecting on the overall experience, Gumbi highlighted both the competitive and organisational aspects of the tournament.

“On the court, I’ve had nothing but compliments from teams,” he said. “Off the court, there have been logistical concerns as experienced in any competition of this magnitude, but nothing that could not be overcome, and the Angolan LOC must be complimented on hosting.”

The significance of the tournament is not lost on the team. Serving as the African qualifiers for the Wheelchair Basketball World Championships, the stakes are incredibly high.

“The country that wins this tournament is the representative of Africa at the World Championship, therefore it is an absolute privilege and honour for South Africa.”

South Africa’s journey has not been without its challenges. In their win over Angola, the team was forced to adapt quickly after losing two players to disqualification fouls. The level of competition has also tested the squad, with powerhouse nations such as Morocco, Algeria and Senegal all in contention. Gumbi acknowledged the balance across the tournament, saying there have been strong and weak teams participating, while pointing out that both the men’s and women’s competitions have produced tightly contested matches.

South Africa’s women’s team has also impressed, currently sitting second in their pool behind Algeria. Gumbi highlighted some of the standout moments so far.

“The South African women’s game against Algeria and the men’s Algerian-Senegalese game… both games went down to the wire with Algeria winning in both men’s and women’s pools.”

Attention now turns to the semi-finals, where South Africa will face an unbeaten Algerian side. Beyond the results, Gumbi emphasised the importance of continued support and visibility for disability sport.

“Very important for all disability sports, not only wheelchair basketball. Without them, we would never have reached the exposure and visibility that have elevated the sport in South Africa and across the continent.”

For the AmaWheela Boys and Girls, success in Angola would mean more than continental glory.

“The Sasol AmaWheela Boys and Girls would be crowned champions of Africa and be Africa’s representatives at the World Games,” Gumbi said. “This not only provides the sport with more marketing opportunities but elevates South Africa as the dominant force in wheelchair basketball across Africa.”
