With rugby celebrations across the country, this milestone celebration brings together schoolboy rugby, tradition, and a deep sense of brotherhood that has defined Pretoria Boys High for generations.

Pretoria, South Africa (07 April 2026) – Pretoria Boys High School, one of the oldest schools in Pretoria, is celebrating 125 years of excellence this year. What better way to mark the milestone than with a rugby festival on the hallowed Brooks Field?

Across the country, rugby festivals have become a staple of the school calendar, bringing together some of the best young talent and fiercest rivalries. From one province to the next, they’re about tradition, connection, and a shared love for the game. And in Pretoria, Boys High’s contribution to that landscape carries a legacy of its own.

As the school celebrates 125 years of excellence, its rugby festival becomes more than just a weekend of fixtures. It’s a gathering of history, pride, and a brotherhood that stretches across generations.

For director of rugby Paul Anthony, the real significance lies beyond the touchline.

“I think it’s like a family. The school’s based on the old boys, it’s like a brotherhood. The guys just stick together and go on forever. It’s a massive bond.”

That sense of belonging is something he knows well. Anthony himself walked these fields as a learner in the mid-1970s before returning years later as a coach.

It’s a cycle that extends beyond him. Having coached some of the very figures who now lead the school, and with his own sons having come through the system, his connection to Pretoria Boys High runs deep.

“My sons were right here,” he says. “They’re now overseas, but they’ll be watching, and by four o’clock they’ll be telling me what we did right and wrong. That’s how invested they are.”

While the festival showcases high-level competition, Anthony is quick to emphasise that schoolboy rugby should be about more than just winning.

“People come for the rugby and the competition, but also to catch up with their mates. There’ll be a tent full tonight, just reminiscing. That’s what it’s about.”

As the school celebrates 125 years, Anthony is clear about the kind of legacy it hopes to leave behind.

“The legacy should be to send well-educated, well-mannered young men into the world,” he says. “Men who love this country and want to make a difference.”

KwaZulu-Natal’s netball star brings her sharp shooting and Baby Protea talent to Malaysia in a professional netball league.

Kokstad, South Africa (07 April 2026) – From the courts of Kokstad to the international stage, Mbali Diphoko is taking her talent global.

The rising netball star from KwaZulu-Natal has secured an exciting move to Malaysia, where she’ll be turning out for the Selangor Angels in a professional league stint that marks another big step in her journey.

Hailing from the Harry Gwala District, Mbali has built a reputation as a calm and clinical shooter, known for delivering when it matters most. Whether it’s her accuracy, confidence under pressure, or natural flair on court, she’s become one of the standout young talents coming through South African netball.

This opportunity may be a short-term stint, but it speaks volumes about just how far her game has come. It’s also a proud moment for KwaZulu-Natal netball.

In the past, Mbali has shared that her playbook for success is built on hard work, resilience, and self-belief. She emphasises the importance of putting in the time to improve your skills, persevering through tough times, and trusting in your abilities to achieve your dreams. From her roots in Shayamoya to representing South Africa on the international stage, Mbali continues to inspire young netballers across the country.

As a Baby Protea shooter, Mbali has already shown glimpses of her potential, and now she carries that same promise onto an international platform. Now it’s all about representing where she comes from and inspiring others who dream of following a similar path.

For KZN Netball, this is a celebration of one of their own.

The SA Youth Rugby Medical Assistance Fund is calling on the public to support injured players like Sandile and Wian, whose family now faces overwhelming medical costs after a serious head injury.

South Africa (07 April 2026) – It all started as a mission to support young rugby players in crisis. Now it is becoming a lifeline for families facing some of their toughest moments. The SA Youth Rugby Medical Assistance Fund is stepping in where help is needed most. By ensuring that injured players are not left to face the aftermath alone.

Right now, that support is focused on a young player named Sandile, who suffered a serious head injury that included a fractured skull and a blood clot on the brain. No one prepares for these injuries and unfortunately, his situation has been made even more difficult by the fact that his medical insurance has declined to cover the costs.

Sandile’s mother, who is currently unemployed, is raising him on her own following the passing of his father. With hospital bills expected to be significantly high, the financial pressure has quickly become overwhelming. Despite efforts to share his story across various rugby communities, support has been limited so far. This shows just how many families face these battles quietly, without the backing they need.

It’s exactly why the SA Youth Rugby Medical Assistance Fund exists. The organisation was created to ensure that young players, regardless of their background or visibility, have access to support during moments like these. For those behind the initiative, this work is deeply personal, driven by lived experiences of navigating serious rugby injuries without adequate medical cover.

As part of their efforts to raise funds, the organisation has launched a “Fill My Tank” raffle. With fuel prices continuing to climb, the prize of a full tank of petrol or diesel is both practical and timely, while also contributing to a meaningful cause.

Tickets are available at R20 each, or R100 for six entries, with the draw set to take place on 18 April 2026. Every entry goes towards supporting injured school rugby players like Sandile, helping ease the financial burden on their families during incredibly difficult times.

The fund is also supporting another young player, Wian Botha, a 15-year-old from Krugersdorp whose rugby journey has been put on hold after suffering two concussions last year. He has since been diagnosed with post-concussion syndrome and now requires at least six months of ongoing treatment to recover fully. Like Sandile, Wian’s situation highlights just how quickly things can change for young athletes, and how important it is to have support systems in place.

More than anything, this is about community. Showing up, even in small ways, for those who need it most.

For more information or to get involved, follow the SA Youth Rugby Medical Assistance Fund on their social media platforms via the link here.

What started as one runner’s personal routine has grown into a Friday morning gathering where everyone, from beginners to seasoned runners feel at home.

Johannesburg, South Africa (07 April 2026) – What began as a quiet Friday morning routine has grown into something far more meaningful. For Natasha Donnelly, the journey of the PPT Social Run didn’t start with a grand plan. In fact, it started during a very personal season of her life.

“At the time, I was more into cycling, but it got too cold, so I started running by myself. One of the girls said, ‘Don’t run alone, come join us.’”

That first run was an unforgettable experience for Natasha. And not because of pace or performance, but because of how it felt.

“I remember thinking I felt out of place because I’m not really a runner. But as we started running and talking, there were no expectations. It was just about connecting, engaging and I immediately felt it.”

From that moment, she kept coming back and what was a simple idea developed into something much bigger.

“I said, why don’t we make this bigger? Not in a complicated way. Just let people know we’re running, and we’ll have coffee afterwards.”

A post shared by Natasha Donnelly (@saffatash)

Partnering with a local coffee spot, the group asked for nothing more than an earlier opening time, and from 15 runners it went to a weekly gathering of nearly 200. But for Natasha, the numbers are not what define PPT.

“It’s difficult to explain, but it’s more than a club,” she says. “It’s a community initiative. It’s a feeling. People come here because they’re looking for something they don’t find elsewhere, that sense of belonging.”

Every Friday before sunrise, people of all ages and fitness levels arrive. It could be runners, walkers, beginners, seasoned athletes, even children before school and grandparents joining in. That sense of inclusivity has also created space for deeply meaningful moments.

One example is Jay-Dee, who joined the run in her wheelchair without any announcement or special arrangement.

“She just arrived one day, and that’s what made it so powerful,” Natasha says. “We never wanted to make it a ‘thing’. She felt comfortable enough to just show up.”

From there, the community stepped in by helping where needed, even arranging a ramp to make the route more accessible.

The same spirit carried into fundraising efforts, where the group raised close to R200,000 to support both Jay-Dee and another member, Bill, with equipment.

And while expansion is exciting, PPT’s mission remains simple.

“As long as it’s about the people, and there’s good coffee,” she smiles, “then we’re happy.”

South Africa’s wheelchair basketball team advanced to the semi-finals of the IWBF Africa Championships, keeping their hopes alive for a spot at the World Championship.

Angola (02 April 2026) – South Africa’s national wheelchair basketball team, the Sasol AmaWheela Boys, are making their mark on the continental stage after securing a place in the semi-finals of the IWBF Africa Championships in Angola. Guided by head coach Siphamandla Gumbi, the team delivered a commanding 58–46 victory over the host nation.

Reflecting on the overall experience, Gumbi highlighted both the competitive and organisational aspects of the tournament.

“On the court, I’ve had nothing but compliments from teams,” he said. “Off the court, there have been logistical concerns as experienced in any competition of this magnitude, but nothing that could not be overcome, and the Angolan LOC must be complimented on hosting.”

A post shared by Sasol in Sport (@sasolinsport)

The significance of the tournament is not lost on the team. Serving as the African qualifiers for the Wheelchair Basketball World Championships, the stakes are incredibly high.

“The country that wins this tournament is the representative of Africa at the World Championship, therefore it is an absolute privilege and honour for South Africa.”

South Africa’s journey has not been without its challenges. In their win over Angola, the team was forced to adapt quickly after losing two players to disqualification fouls. The level of competition has also tested the squad, with powerhouse nations such as Morocco, Algeria and Senegal all in contention. Gumbi acknowledged the balance across the tournament, saying there have been strong and weak teams participating, while pointing out that both the men’s and women’s competitions have produced tightly contested matches.

South Africa’s women’s team has also impressed, currently sitting second in their pool behind Algeria. Gumbi highlighted some of the standout moments so far.

“The South African women’s game against Algeria and the men’s Algerian-Senegalese game… both games went down to the wire with Algeria winning in both men’s and women’s pools.”

Attention now turns to the semi-finals, where South Africa will face an unbeaten Algerian side. Beyond the results, Gumbi emphasised the importance of continued support and visibility for disability sport.

“Very important for all disability sports, not only wheelchair basketball. Without them, we would never have reached the exposure and visibility that have elevated the sport in South Africa and across the continent.”

For the AmaWheela Boys and Girls, success in Angola would mean more than continental glory.

“The Sasol AmaWheela Boys and Girls would be crowned champions of Africa and be Africa’s representatives at the World Games,” Gumbi said. “This not only provides the sport with more marketing opportunities but elevates South Africa as the dominant force in wheelchair basketball across Africa.”

The ultra-marathon champion has a new “book” coming, and fans are loving the cheeky preview.

South Africa (01 April 2026) – South African ultra-marathon star Gerda Steyn had fans doing a double-take this April Fool’s when she announced her latest “project”: a book titled Forget Running, An Autobiography.

Gerda shared a playful sneak peek of her ‘book,’ with some hilarious tips only an ultra-runner could come up with:

  • Running is overrated
  • Train for 10km, race an ultra
  • Better overtrained than undertrained
  • How to run on empty
  • Niggles are a sign of success
  • Train insane or remain the same

Pre-orders for the book are “coming soon,” but Steyn left a few empty pages, joking that her story is still very much in motion.

Fans quickly took to the comments to join in on the fun.

“Thank God for the comments because I was already sold.”

Trust that you were not the only one.

“Why does this sound like a 1 April’s story?”

They were clearly catching on, but still not 100% sure.

“Never mind the date, we know this is fake because you still have loads of races to win in the future. You’d have to update that book yearly!”

Gerda’s playful side has everyone smiling, while reminding runners and fans that the ultra-marathon champion isn’t slowing down anytime soon.

Safe to say, she almost had us there. So maybe keep your guard up for the rest of the day, because if Gerda can pull this off, anything is possible this April Fool’s

From survival to self-belief, Kathryn Powell and Alwande Mthembu’s journeys come together in a moment of courage and kindness at the Oceans 8 Charity Swim.

Durban, South Africa (01 April 2026) – Some of the most powerful stories from our communities start with people choosing to lift each other up. At this year’s Oceans 8 Charity Swim, set to take place at Vetch’s Beach in May, two South African women are looking to uplift others.

At the centre of it all is 22-year-old Alwande Mthembu, who will be taking on the 1-Mile swim for the very first time. This is an opportunity made possible through an act of kindness from Kathryn Powell, who chose to pass on her entry and, in doing so, change someone else’s journey.

For Kathryn, that decision carries deep meaning. Her life changed dramatically in 2022 after surviving a devastating leopard attack while living in the Sabi Sand Nature Reserve. What followed was a long and difficult road. Multiple surgeries and months in hospital. Through it all, she found strength in the water. Open water swimming became a way to heal, to rebuild, and to reconnect with purpose. Although ongoing health challenges have kept her from competing this year, she found another way to be part of something bigger.

“Oceans 8 brought so much more than just a swim,” she shares. “It gave us an outlet to pour our energy back into the community that supported us during our hardest days. This is not just about swimming but creating opportunities, lifting others up, and being part of something bigger than yourself.”

Living with a visual impairment, Alwande has no sight in one eye and limited vision in the other. But her story is about everything she continues to achieve.

“I struggled in my early years because I didn’t fully believe in myself,” she says. “But now, the confidence I have is beyond compare. Any chance I get to try something new, I take it.”

She also made waves in adaptive surfing, quickly rising through the ranks to become a national champion and earn international selection.

Now, she’s stepping into open water, ready to embrace a completely new challenge.

“I am out of words for this opportunity,” she says. “It’s a privilege and an honour to represent Kathryn and her family. I’m so excited to swim, to grow, and to create lasting connections. I am truly grateful.”

As the Oceans 8 Charity Swim approaches, we are inspired by how important it is to take second chances.

One of South Africa’s biggest football clubs launches a women’s team, marking a major step in women’s football.

Johannesburg, South Africa (01 April 2026) – Big news for South African football! Kaizer Chiefs have officially stepped into the women’s game, and it’s a moment that’s been a long time coming.

The club unveiled its brand-new women’s side in Daveyton, marking an exciting new chapter not just for Chiefs, but for women’s football across the country. One of the biggest names in the game is now creating space for women to shine in those famous colours.

The squad already has a strong mix of experience and young talent, including former Banyana Banyana midfielder Mamello Makhabane, along with rising players like Zanele Kunyamane and Katlego Mohale. It’s the kind of blend that promises both quality now and serious potential for the future.

Club Chairman Kaizer Motaung says this is about more than just adding another team.

“This is a proud moment for Kaizer Chiefs. As a Club, we understand the responsibility we carry within South African football, and this step reflects our commitment to growing the game in a meaningful way. Women’s football is an important part of the future, and we are committed to being part of that journey.”

He added that building a team like this is about thinking long-term, with a focus on future generations, and ensuring the game continues to grow, become more inclusive, and strengthen over time.

“When you build something of this nature, you must think beyond the present moment. You must consider the generations that will follow and the responsibility that comes with that.”

At the heart of it all is something fans have been calling for. Real opportunities for women in the game, and a proper pathway to grow and compete at the highest level.

That’s something Jessica Motaung has highlighted.

“This is about building real pathways for women in the game. The women’s game is growing rapidly across the world, and South Africa is part of that upward trajectory. We want female soccer players to see this team and understand that there is a place for them within Kaizer Chiefs and within the global game.”

She expressed appreciation for the support received, adding that strong collaboration plays a key role in building something sustainable.

With a full squad, coaching team, and a home base in Johannesburg, the team is getting ready to compete and bring a whole new energy to the local women’s game.

Women’s football in South Africa is growing, and now, one of the biggest clubs in the country is fully part of that journey.

South Africa’s leading canoe sprint athletes impressed at Roodeplaat, building confidence as they begin their journey towards the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games.

Pretoria, South Africa (01 April 2026) – It was a strong showing from South Africa’s top canoe sprint athletes at the national championships, with performances at Roodeplaat Dam offering an early glimpse into what could lie ahead on the road to the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.

Among those leading the charge were Olympic hopefuls Hamish Lovemore and Esti Olivier, who both delivered dominant displays across their respective events. Their results underlined their current form but also set a solid foundation for the international season ahead.

The World Cup Silver medalist, Lovemore, made a brief but impactful appearance at the three-day regatta. Competing over just two days, he swept all three of his K1 races. The 1000m, 500m and 5000m, while also adding a K2 500m victory alongside Denmark’s Jonathan Dagnaes. His performance in the 1000m, in particular, stood out, finishing comfortably ahead of the field in what remains his key focus event heading towards LA28.

With his domestic campaign wrapped up, Lovemore quickly shifted gears, departing for a training block in Spain as he continues preparations against stronger international competition.

Olivier was equally impressive on the water. The experienced Olympian secured convincing wins in both the K1 500m and 200m events before teaming up with rising talent Alexa Godden to dominate the K2 races over the same distances. Her performances reflected a well-executed training programme and a steady build-up as she eyes another strong international campaign.

While the spotlight naturally fell on the country’s leading names, there were also encouraging performances elsewhere. Former Olympic medallist Bridgitte Hartley made her presence felt with gold medals in the K1 1000m and 5000m events, adding further depth to South Africa’s senior ranks.

This event was also an important platform for team selection. The event doubled as trials for several upcoming international competitions, including the senior World Championships in Poland, the junior and U23 World Championships in Canada, and the Olympic Dreams regatta in Slovakia.

For those athletes looking to make their mark on the global stage, more events are expected to be announced soon.
