She was arrested and then barred from her degree. Her twin daughters just graduated from the same university together.

Stellenbosch, South Africa (29 March 2026) – In the early 1980s, a young woman named Patricia Grace Rorich was studying medicine at Stellenbosch University when she was arrested for protesting the injustices of apartheid.

When she was released, she was told she couldn’t continue her MBChB degree. She had to switch to a BSc in dietetics, instead. During her studies, she wasn’t allowed to live in residence because she was classified as coloured. She stayed with her uncle in Idas Valley, instead.

Patricia finished her degree, got married, and had twin daughters. Then she was diagnosed with breast cancer. Clio and KD Sass were three years old when their mother died.

Their father, Ernest, raised the girls alone in Pinelands, Cape Town, surrounded by a large extended family. He told them their mother loved unconditionally and saw the good in everyone. He used to tell them that the brightest star in the sky was their mom, looking out for them. The twins only learned the full story of what had happened to Patricia at Stellenbosch when they were in Grade 11, the same year they started thinking about which university to apply to.

“When we heard it, we just knew that we had to come to Stellenbosch,” said KD, as per Stellenbosch University. “Her story meant that we couldn’t succumb to a spirit of victimhood. Sometimes things don’t go as planned, but we can always grow forward if we strive forthrightly.”

They arrived as Maties and spent their first four years living in residences within walking distance of each other. They studied together, supported each other through the pressure of university life, and both rose to leadership positions in their residences.

Walking to class and living in a residence where her mom had been denied held weight.

“It just brings so much humility – sadness for her and for so many others, but overall gratitude,” said KD, as per Stellenbosch University.

Clio also felt her own version of that connection when she realised her chosen field had actually overlapped with her mom’s

“It felt very full circle being in a similar field to what our mother studied,” she said.

The journey didn’t come without challenges. KD’s degree in mathematics typically takes three years. It took her six, and required a Dean’s Concession to complete. She kept going because of the example her mom had set. She mentioned she’d bought her graduation dress in 2024, the year she first thought she’d be done.

“I’m very happy to now be wearing that dress for the first time for my graduation!” she said.

On 25 March 2026, Clio received her master’s degree in food science, awarded cum laude. KD received her BSc in mathematical sciences, biomathematics. They walked across the stage on the same day, at the same university where their mother’s dreams were once taken from her.

Their dad watched from the crowd.

“The fact that Clio and KD are graduating on the same day makes this occasion exceptionally special,” said Ernest Sass, as per Stellenbosch University. “When they were born, I could never have imagined that I would one day be their primary caregiver and provider. The sacrifices and uncertainties along the way were immense – and now, standing at this moment of their graduation, I am left speechless.”

The twins say their mom’s middle name, Grace, described who she was, and what she was denied.

“To live with grace is to show kindness, humility and goodwill,” Clio said. “Grace was not always given to my mother, yet she continued to give it freely to others. She rose above her circumstances, and we can all learn a powerful lesson from her life.”

A Cape fur seal spotted with a tight noose around its neck in Hout Bay has been successfully freed after a coordinated rescue effort!

Western Cape, South Africa (27 March 2026) – The Hout Bay Seal Rescue Centre first raised concern over the weekend when the Cape fur seal was seen with a piece of discarded material cutting into its neck, like a noose.

The photos are difficult to look at, but they show the reality of entanglement. How quickly waste in the ocean can turn into a serious, life-threatening injury…

Photo Credit: Hout Bay Seal Rescue Centre

An initial rescue attempt on Sunday, supported by the NSRI and the Two Oceans Aquarium, was unsuccessful when the seal unfortunately left the harbour before the team could reach him.

Then, on a second sighting, things came together!

“This morning the [Cape fur seal] with the noose around his neck came into the Hout Bay Harbour again. We had everything we needed, the skill, the tools and the dedication. All we needed was a boat to get to him.”

That final piece came down to compassionate people willing to help. The team reached out to Captain Jack’s Ocean Safaris, and without hesitation, they agreed to take Amos, Abel and Jo out on their boat.

“We reached out to Captain Jack’s Ocean Safaris Hout Bay to take [us] out in their boat and they said yes!!”

Photo Credit: Hout Bay Seal Rescue Centre

Using a long hook borrowed from fellow marine heroes at Two Oceans Aquarium, the team was able to reach the seal from the vessel.

“We knew that we would be able to get close enough with the long hook that the Two Oceans Aquarium has lent us to do the job.”

Because everything came together so speedily, the team was able to act quickly when the seal returned.

“So all aboard and out they went. It took one stretch forward, under the noose with the hook, the seal jumped off the pipe and the blade cut up and released the rope.”

The seal is now free and back in the salty ocean water, where its wounds can begin to heal up!

“We are so grateful to Anthea and team from Captain Jacks Safaris and the Aquarium helping us. So now the seal will heal in the salty ocean.”

Cases like this are part of a much bigger problem along South Africa’s coastline. Research tracking Cape fur seals over time has recorded hundreds of entanglements, most linked to discarded fishing gear and plastic waste. These materials can tighten, cut, and worsen wounds over time, which often leads to severe injury or death if animals aren’t reached in time.

That’s why what happens before waste reaches the ocean matters just as much as what happens after. Fishing line left behind on rocks, beaches or harbours can easily be pulled back into the sea by wind and waves, where it becomes almost invisible and incredibly dangerous to marine life.

There are already efforts along the coast trying to intercept this waste early. Projects like WESSA’s Stop the Strangle campaign are rolling out dedicated collection bins at popular fishing spots to catch discarded line before it washes into the ocean.

The Hout Bay Seal Rescue Centre are heroes who need help to keep up their meaningful work in rescuing and rehabilitating seals in need across the Western Cape.

The organisation is currently raising funds to cover the costs of a new rescue vehicle as their trusted old bakkie has reached the end of its lifespan. Beyond that, help covering operational costs like medical supplies and fuel is also needed. Your support will help keep the seals safe. Donate here.

A team of Cape Town specialists has just marked a groundbreaking medical first for the country – one that could change how certain cancers are treated going forward!

Cape Town, South Africa (27 March 2026) – Doctors at UCT Private Academic Hospital have just performed an incredible medical milestone!

Dr Gercois Human, Dr Jateel Kassim, Dr Gareth Bydawell and the Cape Town Interventional Radiology team successfully used cryoablation to treat cancer that had returned after surgery.

Photo Credit: Cape Town Interventional Radiology

It’s the first time this technique has been used locally for this type of cancer spread.

Cryoablation, in simple terms, uses extremely cold temperatures to freeze and destroy cancer cells. Guided by advanced imaging, doctors can target tumours with precision, without the need for major surgery.

In this case, the patient had previously undergone treatment for papillary thyroid carcinoma, a common form of thyroid cancer. While the original tumour had been removed, the cancer later returned in the form of secondary tumours elsewhere in the body, a process known as metastasis.

Using cryoablation, the medical team were able to directly treat these tumours by freezing them, offering a less invasive option with the potential for faster recovery and fewer complications.

It’s a significant moment not just for the team involved but for cancer care in South Africa as a whole!

Treatments like this are changing what’s possible, especially for patients facing recurrence,
where options can often feel limited.

While this is just one case, it opens the door to broader use of cryoablation in treating the spread of certain forms of cancer locally, giving patients access to groundbreaking care without needing to look abroad.

A Pretoria primary school stopped everything to celebrate their security guard on his 54th birthday.

Pretoria, South Africa (20 March 2026) – This story made our whole team smile, and we just had to share it!

Jacob Maredi is the security guard at Laerskool Pretoria Oos in Pretoria. Has been for 28 years. Every morning he is already at the gate before the first bell where he greets kids by name, helps parents in and out, and even sorts the traffic when the robot goes out.

Every day he shows up with the biggest smile and the best energy. He’s 54. He works long hours, locks up after night sports, and then still finds the time to go for a run afterwards! He’s a legend.

Two Grade 7 moms, Frances and Marna, decided his birthday this year wasn’t going to pass by without a big celebration. They started a WhatsApp group, parents piled in, and the idea just grew and grew until it turned into a full school procession – an ‘optog’ – on Thursday morning.

“From pre-school all the way to Grade 7, learners walked together through the front gates – singing, cheering, blowing whistles, and holding handmade posters and banners.” says Frances.

It was the biggest show of love for Jacob.

The gates were done up with balloons and flags. Someone’s dad brought a portrait he’d painted of Jacob. Cupcakes for the whole school and beyond. Chocolates, vouchers, gifts from families who’ve been greeted by Jacob’s smile every morning for years. Even people walking past on the street stopped and came over to wish him.

Oh, and he got crowned as ‘The Golden Osie Security Guard’ with an actual crown and sash to match!

Jacob had zero clue it was coming. When asked why he thinks people love him, he said that it could perhaps be his kindness. A man who knows its one of the greatest superpowers of all!

“I did not expect it at all. I felt like I was flying. It was a very special day. I will never forget it.” said Jacob. “I love the children, especially the little ones. I enjoy working with them and helping them. I think people love me because I am friendly and helpful.”

Frances shared the note she wrote for him, which shows the genuine love and appreciation an entire school community holds for their Golden Osie hero. Originally, it was written in Afrikaans; we translated it.

“Dear Jacob,

Your smile and kindness have greeted us (the Geldenhuys family) warmly for eight years – every single day at the gate. You have no idea what you mean to this school. You are the coolest guy in Roper Street – the place where we’ll always find you.

Your kindness plays a huge role in the life of every child starting out at Osies. You teach them about respect and friendliness.

I want to say thank you to you.

We all hope you had a wonderful day and a great birthday, and that you enjoyed every moment.

With much love from every Barefoot-Osie and Osie parent.”

Thanks to your kindness, Mzansi, a fridge, an inverter, and a whole lot of love are keeping David’s Puppy SOS KZN rescue mission alive.

KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa (20 March 2026) – Towards the end of last month, the Robin Hood Foundation shared its hopes to help out a fellow helper, David from Puppy SOS KZN.

Living in a remote area outside Verulam, David has opened his home to more than 100 rescued dogs. Through ongoing sterilisation efforts, he has also reduced the number of unwanted puppies in his area significantly, bringing long-term change to stop the stray cycle.

Change he’s achieved with very limited resources and support… until recently.

Thanks to a heartfelt appeal shared by the Robin Hood Foundation, the greater public has stood up to help fill the gap.

Because of you, the Foundation returned to visit David, and thanks to your generosity, arrived bearing gifts, handing over:

  • Clothing and shoes
  • Easter eggs
  • Care and food parcels for each of his 6 dedicated staff members
  • A donated bar fridge
  • An inverter to help keep his phone and fridge powered during outages

“What may seem like simple items are, in David’s world, lifelines — helping him continue the incredible work he does every single day for his dogs and community,” the Foundation said.

Images captured from the delivery were marked by smiles that spoke to the appreciation of these gifts and supplies that will keep an honest man’s mission to care for vulnerable animals alive.

And the morning didn’t stop there.

“In true Robin Hood style, we followed a nudge and found ourselves visiting a nearby crèche and an old-age home. With arms still full, we shared Easter eggs, clothing, and biscuits — and in return, we were given something far greater.”

The team got to dance, sing and laugh with the elders, creating a moment of pure joy and connection that none of them will forget.

“This is what happens when people come together with open hands and open hearts. Thank you for helping us care for the caregivers — and for allowing us to keep saying “yes” when we see need along the way.”

They say it takes a village, and for David’s tiny rescues, that village just showed up in a massive way!

A quick-thinking resident raised the alarm, sparking a late-night rescue that saw teams work for hours to free two terrified puppies trapped deep inside a pipe.

Phoenix, South Africa (17 March 2026) – Sometimes, it takes a community and a bit of creativity to save a life.

A late-night rescue operation in Phoenix captured hearts after two frightened puppies were safely pulled from a stormwater pipe, thanks to the combined efforts of local residents and animal welfare teams, including Phoenix Animal Care & Treatment and START Rescue.

The situation began when a resident walking home in the evening heard faint cries coming from a nearby manhole. After lifting the cover, they discovered two tiny puppies trapped deep inside the pipe.

Rescue teams arrived later that night and quickly realised this would not be a straightforward operation. The pipe was too tight to enter fully, and every attempt to reach the puppies only pushed them deeper into hiding. Working together, the teams carefully traced both ends of the pipe and blocked off one side to limit the space the puppies could move in.

After hours of patience and teamwork, the plan worked. One puppy was gently guided toward one end of the pipe, while the other made its way to the opposite side.

By the early hours of the morning, just after 2:30am, both puppies were safely out.

While it remains unclear how they ended up trapped underground, what stood out was the determination of everyone involved.

It was a long night, but one that ended in the best possible way.

A tiny calico kitten found safety and a second chance after a stranger carried her through the shelter doors in a shopping bag.

Durban, South Africa (03 March 2026) – If you look closely enough, there are always small moments that remind you that people still choose kindness.

Last week, the Kloof and Highway SPCA shared a heartwarming story. A man walked through their doors holding a Woolworths shopping bag tightly against his chest. He explained that he had done everything he could to catch the tiny kitten inside and bring her somewhere safe. He wasn’t sure what would happen next. He only knew she needed help.

The Admission Supervisor and resident Kitten Carer, Petros Ntuli, carefully took the bag. It shifted slightly in his hands, and when he gently opened it, two wide yellow eyes looked back at him. Curled inside was a delicate little calico kitten, visibly shaken from the ordeal.

Photo Credit: Kloof and Highway SPCA

Although she appeared calm, Petros could feel how fast her tiny heart was beating. Without hesitation, he lifted her out and held her close, offering the quiet reassurance only steady hands can give. Slowly, she began to settle.

Once she seemed a little more at ease, she was placed her in a warm kennel lined with a soft blanket.

The team named her Monday, seeing that the start of that week brought an unexpected reminder of kindness.

When the world turned upside down in 2020, Vutomi lost her career as an accountant, only to find the recipe for her true calling.

Gauteng, South Africa (01 March 2026) – When the Covid-19 pandemic hit, Vutomi E Lubisi, a woman who was an accountant by profession but a baker at heart, found herself able to pivot from the career she had always known to embrace her true entrepreneurial spirit.

It was an inspiring life change that was made possible by the angels who supported her during a time of great uncertainty.

The Covid-19 pandemic was a challenging period, to say the least. It turned countless lives upside down and brought an unwelcome wave of need that swept into even the most secure homes.

However, even in the midst of that hardship, teams of helpers, do-gooders, and guardian angels rose to support families during these difficult times. One such team was the Angel Network Gauteng, which ran dozens of soup kitchens daily, providing food for those who were hungry and vulnerable.

When the state of emergency stabilised, the charity made the move to empower the people it served so that they could stand on their own feet and rebuild better lives.

It was the difference between giving a person a meal and equipping them with the means to go out there and get it themselves. As the Angel Network puts it:

“Relief saves lives. Sustainability changes them.”

One of the ways the organisation achieved this was by equipping individuals to run home-based bakeries and generate income within their own communities.

A shining success of this initiative is Vutomi, who is today the proud owner of her own bakery.

“When COVID hit, she pivoted, building a thriving wedding cake business from her kitchen. Today, through Eully’s Cakery, she empowers others to create sustainable baking businesses through practical training and ongoing support,” the Angel Network Gauteng said.

And the proof is in the cake mix!

This past Saturday, 20 of the Angel Network’s beneficiaries attended Vutomi’s workshop, where the kitchen was filled with laughter, connection, and the unmistakable smell of possibility.

“What a powerful day it was. They learned to bake exceptional scones and muffins, understand basic costing and begin thinking like business owners. Many are already selling into their communities.”

The Angel Network has supported these members with ovens, essential equipment, as well as the skills, confidence and a pathway to income.

Relief was necessary, but sustainability has certainly been transformational.

Just when we thought the support surrounding the Uitenhage SPCA couldn’t get any more extraordinary…it has!

Uitenhage, South Africa (01 March 2026) – This week, the Uitenhage SPCA received an extraordinary and quite frankly unbelievable donation of half a million rand from an anonymous benefactor who chose to help without expecting anything in return.

The profound act of kindness has left the entire SPCA team – and the wider community rallying behind them – bowled over in gratitude.

“We are absolutely stunned. We are incredibly humbled. And we are forever grateful for this act of compassion and faith in our cause.” the SPCA shared. “This donation has shifted our barometer in the most powerful way – but more importantly, it has shifted hope for the animals who depend on us every single day. To our anonymous angel: thank you for choosing kindness, dignity, and life. You have changed what is possible for SPCA Uitenhage.”

With this single donation, the campaign’s total has surged to R1,641,938, reaching 61% of the R2.7 million goal needed to secure a new, permanent home for the organisation.

The Uitenhage SPCA is being carried by a community that refuses to give up on its animals. There’s young Riley van Eck, the Grade 5 boy who challenged his school and the country to step up. And Nicole Blignault De Jager, who with her dog Willow raised R42,000. There are countless schools, businesses and individuals who have rallied to help them secure a new home with fundraiser events, lucky draws, fun rides, raffles and more!

The SPCA has been navigating an incredibly difficult season. Ordered to vacate the premises it has called home for more than 50 years, the team has been working tirelessly to raise the funds needed to buy a new property.

“On the advice of our legal team, SPCA Uitenhage will not be vacating our current property at this stage, until further notice. This gives us a little breathing room as processes continue. That said, our mission to secure a safe, permanent home for our animals is far from over. We are still actively fundraising to raise the funds needed for our new premises – a place of safety, dignity and hope for every animal in our care. Every donation, every share, every message of support is helping us move closer to a future where no animal is left without shelter. Thank you for standing with us, fighting with us, and believing in us. We couldn’t do this without our incredible community.” shared the SPCA in a recent update.

When a young boy’s handwritten “thank you” to Funda Nenja and the SPCA for saving his sick dog went viral, it didn’t just melt the internet’s heart; it brought his grateful family to tears as they realised exactly how much their small act of kindness moved the world.

Mpophomeni, South Africa (26 February 2026) – Some stories truly tug at the heart.

Just two weeks ago, Funda Nenja shared a touching story about Alondwe Ngcobo, who joined their dog school in 2021. Sadly, his beloved dog passed away, leaving Alondwe devastated. Sensing his grief and sense of loss, his mother gifted him a new dog, whom Alondwe named Rocky. Together, this closely bonded pair now find themselves in Funda Nenja’s top class.

The story, however, becomes even more heartfelt when Rocky fell ill. With support from the Funda Nenja team, Rocky was admitted to the uMngeni SPCA clinic and received the care she needed.

After Rocky recovered from severe kennel cough and returned home, Alondwe wrote a letter of thanks to both Funda Nenja and the SPCA. This letter was later shared on social media.

“This story touched the hearts of many and resulted in the post going viral – viewed over 61,000 times, 83 shares and 88 comments that were mostly directed at Rocky’s family,” Funda Njenja shared.

This week, Zinhle, the organisation’s social worker, visited the Ngcobo family, bringing goodies and sharing the news of the impact of Alondwe’s letter with his grandmother.

“Alondwe Ngcobo’s granny shed tears when I read the comments from Alondwe’s previous post on Facebook. She told us how much she appreciates having Rocky as a member of the family. She continued, saying that she and Alondwe always make sure they share their food with Rocky, even in difficult times,” Zinhle said.

The grandmother and the neighbouring community expressed their firm belief that Funda Nenja would come to Rocky’s rescue and assist them in their hour of need.

Alondwe and Rocky’s journey with Funda Nenja, along with their family and the community’s gratitude, just goes to show how the animal welfare organisation’s One Welfare approach has transformed the community’s perception of animals and the way they care for them.
