The Foundation’s fourth annual golf day aims to raise awareness and provide eye care for children and adults living with impaired vision.

Hartbeespoort, South Africa (20 March 2026) – For many South Africans, being able to see clearly is something we hardly think about. But for thousands, it’s a daily struggle. The Rita Teka Foundation is stepping in to change that, offering eye screenings, glasses, and referrals that are transforming lives.

On 27 March 2026, the Foundation will host its 4th Annual Charity Golf Day at Magalies Park Country Club. The day will be a celebration of the Foundation’s mission to restore sight and open doors of opportunity for children and adults across the country.

Established in 2023 by optometrist Dr Rita Teka, the Foundation is built on the belief that clear vision is a basic right. Since starting, it has conducted over 2,000 eye screenings, handed out 1,500+ pairs of glasses, and referred around 1,000 cases for specialised care.

“The Foundation focuses especially on underserved public-school children, where undiagnosed vision problems often affect academic performance and self-confidence,” Dr Teka explains. “When a child can finally see the board clearly, it can change the trajectory of their entire future.”

Dr Teka’s journey began long before the Foundation was formalised. In 2014, a young girl from Alexandra township revealed just how many children live with untreated vision problems. That encounter lit a spark that has grown into a national movement helping thousands of South Africans see the world more clearly.

This year, the Foundation is collaborating with Rose Coloured Lens, led by Nguni Nkuli Bogopa, who has personal experience of life with impaired vision. Her story of resilience and advocacy brings another powerful voice to the initiative.

Together, Dr Teka and Nkuli are leading a mission to ensure that no South African has to live with preventable visual limitations. From helping children succeed in the classroom to improving independence for adults, the Foundation continues to show the life-changing power of sight.

And the 4th Annual Charity Golf Day promises to be a day of purpose, while celebrating the Foundation’s impact and raising resources to restore sight for those in need.

The Pietermaritzburg cyclist will travel to the Cape of Good Hope and back to raise awareness and funds for the rural NPO supporting underprivileged learners.

Pietermaritzburg, South Africa (19 March 2026) – From Hope Valley Farm School in KwaZulu-Natal to the Cape of Good Hope and back, Nathan Michell is about to take on a cycling journey like no other. 3,500km for a cause close to his heart. It’s called Cycle for Hope, and the mission is simple: raise awareness and funds for Hope Valley Farm School, a local NPO giving underprivileged children a chance to build a brighter future.

“I’ve always had it on my heart to do a fundraiser for this school. During my gap year, we worked closely with them, and now I’m finally in a position to do something about it.”

Hope Valley Farm School operates on a rural farm, providing learners from farmworker families and nearby informal settlements with access to quality education that they might not otherwise have.

“They’re giving these kids opportunities that can change the course of their lives. Supporting that felt like the right thing to do.”

Cycling isn’t new to Nathan. He’s taken on the Cape Town Cycle Tour, and other challenges over the years. However, this is his most ambitious one yet! Preparing for 3,500km of cycling while balancing part-time online studies and his role as a sports coach at a local school takes discipline. For Nathan, the journey is about more than distance.

“It’s about raising awareness for the school, inspiring others, and showing what can be achieved when you commit to a cause.”

While he hasn’t launched a formal campaign, Nathan has set things up so donations go directly to Hope Valley Farm School.

The adventure begins on 6 July, and Nathan hopes to finish around 22 July, cycling with all his gear along the way.

“It’s going to be tough, but every challenge is worth it if it benefits the learners at the school.”

As World Social Work Day is observed, CANSA highlights the essential role social workers play in supporting patients and families through the cancer journey.

South Africa (19 March 2026) – Across South Africa, the quiet work of social workers continues to make a powerful difference, often behind the scenes. However, most importantly, it’s never unnoticed.

This week, the Cancer Association of South Africa (CANSA) took a moment to shine a light on these everyday heroes, marking World Social Work Day on 17 March and honouring the vital role they play in supporting individuals, families and communities.

Celebrated under the theme “Co-Building Hope and Harmony: A Harambee Call to Unite a Divided Society,” the day highlights the importance of unity, compassion and collective action. These are also values that social workers bring into their work every single day.

Within the cancer journey, that role becomes even more significant. From the moment of diagnosis, patients and their loved ones are often faced with emotional, financial and practical challenges. This is where social workers step in. To offer counselling, guidance and support, while helping families navigate treatment, access resources and cope with the realities of the illness.

At CANSA, social workers form a core part of the organisation’s care and support services, walking alongside those affected by cancer and ensuring that no one has to face the journey alone. CANSA has long been at the forefront of the fight against cancer in South Africa. Through its work in research, education, advocacy and patient support, the organisation continues to drive its vision of a cancer-free society, while supporting thousands of South Africans along the way.

By recognising World Social Work Day, CANSA celebrates the profession but also acknowledges the human impact behind the work.

Their contribution serves as a reminder that community still sit at the heart of meaningful change.

The Footprints 4 Sam Trust has unveiled a new “Super Sam Hero” minibus in Cape Town, strengthening its mission to transport vulnerable children to critical medical appointments.

Cape Town, South Africa (18 March 2026) – There was a real sense of celebration as The Footprints 4 Sam Trust unveiled its newest addition. This was a bright and bold “Super Sam Hero” minibus set to change even more young lives.

The launch brought together donors, partners and long-time supporters, all united to help vulnerable children get to the medical care they need.

Affectionately known as “Sam se Bussies”, the initiative has become a lifeline for families across the Western Cape. Since launching in 2018, the buses have transported more than 16,700 patients and caregivers, covering over 457,000 kilometres to ensure children make it to critical hospital appointments.

“Every kilometre travelled represents hope,” adds Kelly Robinson, Footprints 4 Sam Trustee, who hosted this special event. “Behind every trip is a child, a worried parent and a hospital appointment that could change or even save a life.”

This vehicle replaces a retired bus that was launched in 2019, travelled over 216,000 kilometres and helped more than 7,800 patients and caregivers along the way.

Melissa Williams-Platt, Managing Trustee of Footprints 4 Sam and Sam’s mum explained.

“When our vehicles reach a certain mileage, Hertz kindly swaps them out for a newer vehicle, ensuring safety on the road.”

For medical professionals like Prof. Mignon McCulloch, the impact is deeply felt.

“For families already facing the emotional and financial strain of a child’s illness, access to transport can make the difference between receiving treatment or missing critical appointments.”

Based at the Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital, she sees first-hand how something as simple as reliable transport can be life-changing.

Looking ahead, the journey is far from over. The Trust is set to expand its footprint, with plans to launch its very first “Sam se Bussie” in Johannesburg later this year.

And as the initiative continues to grow and make an impact, many more lives are changed in the process.

The volunteer-run team at Labrador Rescue South Africa is working to match Nala with a family who loves adventure, playtime and plenty of companionship

Johannesburg, South Africa (13 March 2026) – Finding the right home can change one’s life! That’s what the team at Labrador Rescue South Africa hopes for sweet Nala, an affectionate and energetic Labrador looking for a family to call her own.

The volunteer-led rescue group has spent years helping Labradors across the country find loving homes when life takes unexpected turns for their owners. It all began as a shared love for one of the world’s most loyal and family-friendly dog breeds. And now that love has grown into a compassionate community dedicated to giving these dogs a second chance.

Run entirely by volunteers, Labrador Rescue South Africa supports families who can no longer keep their pets. Right now, one very special pup is hoping her next chapter is just around the corner.

Nala is a happy, affectionate Labrador who absolutely loves being around people. Whether it’s swimming, running around during playtime or simply relaxing close to her favourite humans, she thrives on companionship and activity.

Nala has already attended puppy school too, so she brings lovely manners along with her playful personality. Combined with her loyal nature and bright energy, she has all the ingredients to become an incredible companion in the right home. For the team at Labrador Rescue South Africa, stories like Nala’s are at the heart of everything they do.

To learn more about Nala and how you can support her journey to a loving home, follow the link here.

Kayla Joubert, a young South African dancer, has been invited to join the Dance Connection programme, giving her the chance to perform and train at Walt Disney World in Florida.

uMhlanga, South Africa (12 March 2026) – For as long as her family can remember, Kayla Joubert has approached everything she does with heart. And for years, one dream waited in the background, that’s the chance to dance.

Dance lessons were something the family had always hoped to make possible, but like many parents juggling everyday costs, it simply wasn’t always within reach. That changed last year when they finally decided to take a leap of faith and enrol Kayla in classes. And let’s just say it was all worth it.

Dance became a place where Kayla could express herself fully, pouring hours of dedication into rehearsals and training. That commitment has now opened the door to an extraordinary opportunity.

Kayla has been selected to join the prestigious Dance Connection programme, which will see young dancers perform at Walt Disney World from 9 to 14 December 2026.

The programme gives dancers the chance to perform on an international stage while taking part in professional workshops and creative experiences designed to inspire the next generation of performers. For Kayla, it means dancing at iconic venues inside the world-famous theme park, including the theatre at Disney’s Animal Kingdom.

Overwhelmed with excitement, she burst into tears of joy, repeating the words,

“I made it…I made it…please tell me this isn’t a prank.”

For her family, the moment was both emotional and motivating. They are determined to do everything they can to help her reach that stage.

It is a big dream, but one her family believes is well within reach with the support of the community around them.

To help make the journey possible, they have launched a crowdfunding campaign to raise funds for the programme and travel costs. The funds will help cover the Dance Connection package as well as international flights, visas, transport and other essential expenses for the trip.

To help support and get Kayla to Disney World, follow the link here.

Joel Smith’s 3-day challenge looks to give back, raise funds for 60 children in need and show the power of community.

South Africa (09 March 2026) – At just 21 years old, East London endurance runner Joel Smith is once again setting his sights on an extraordinary challenge, and it’s all for a cause close to his heart.

Later this month, Joel will attempt an incredible feat of endurance called SIXTY 60, a fundraising run designed to support the children cared for by the Kings Children’s Home on the outskirts of East London.

Joel is no stranger to pushing his limits for good. In December 2024, he captured attention when he cycled more than 900 kilometres from Namibia to the Western Cape to raise funds for the same orphanage. Now, he’s back with an even bigger mission and this time he plans to cover 300 kilometres in just three days.

The challenge will take place at Emerald Vale Brewery from 4:00 am on Friday, 27 March 2026, until 3:00 pm on Sunday, 29 March 2026. During that time, Joel plans to run 5 kilometres every 60 minutes, repeating the loop throughout the entire weekend.

Joel is running one 5km loop for each of the 60 babies and children currently being cared for at the Kings Children’s Home, with the ultimate goal of completing 300km over the course of the event.

The fundraiser is designed to be a community effort, inviting people to take part in whatever way they can. Supporters are encouraged to join Joel on the route by running or walking a 5km lap for R100, with every kilometre completed contributing to the overall total. Local businesses and corporate partners are also being invited to sponsor kilometres to help Joel reach his goal.

Joel looks to create meaningful support for the children at the Kings Children’s Home. Every rand raised during the event will go directly toward helping the organisation continue its work caring for vulnerable babies and children.

Whether you lace up your running shoes for a lap, sponsor a few kilometres or simply come along to support, help Joel reach 300km for Kings Children’s Home by donating or sponsoring kilometres here.

Caleb Rossouw has been selected to represent South Africa in Spain this July, and with 80% of his campaign funds still to raise, he’s calling on supporters to help him take his place on the world stage.

Pietermaritzburg, South Africa (04 March 2026) – Caleb Rossouw has an incredible opportunity ahead: he’s been selected to play for South Africa at the U20 World Ultimate Frisbee Championships, taking place from 11–18 July 2026 in Logroño, Spain. The event, governed by the World Flying Disc Federation (WFDF), brings together the best youth teams from across the globe.

There is a challenge for Caleb. The event is self-funded, and participation comes with a significant cost. Approximately R65,000 per player to cover flights, accommodation, kit, training camps, and international tournaments. So far, Caleb has raised just over R12,000, putting him at roughly 20% of his goal. Now, he’s calling on the community to help him reach the remaining 80% so he can take his place on the world stage.

“I want to be the person to grow Ultimate Frisbee in South Africa for the younger children and for them to see someone like me go to Worlds to represent my country.”

The South African Flying Disc Association (SAFDA) and the team selectors recognise him as a worthy representative of South African sport and an ambassador for youth development.

Participating in the campaign has already required extensive preparation, including national trials, training camps, and domestic tournaments. Now, with international travel on the horizon, every contribution matters.

Anyone interested in supporting Caleb’s journey can contribute to his crowdfunding campaign here.

Last week, the Kloof and Highway SPCA shared a heartwarming story. A man walked through their doors holding a Woolworths shopping bag tightly against his chest. He explained that he had done everything he could to catch the tiny kitten inside and bring her somewhere safe. He wasn’t sure what would happen next. He only knew she needed help.

The Admission Supervisor and resident Kitten Carer, Petros Ntuli, carefully took the bag. It shifted slightly in his hands, and when he gently opened it, two wide yellow eyes looked back at him. Curled inside was a delicate little calico kitten, visibly shaken from the ordeal.

Although she appeared calm, Petros could feel how fast her tiny heart was beating. Without hesitation, he lifted her out and held her close, offering the quiet reassurance only steady hands can give. Slowly, she began to settle.

Once she seemed a little more at ease, she was placed her in a warm kennel lined with a soft blanket.

The team named her Monday, seeing that the start of that week brought an unexpected reminder of kindness.

At Red Cross Primary School, young patients turn imagination into art, discovering themselves through drawing, clay, and storytelling.

Western Cape, South Africa (25 February 2026) – At the Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital, education and creativity go hand in hand, helping young patients find joy during challenging times. The hospital’s primary school, one of only three in the Western Cape accredited by the Department of Education, supports 420 children each term, many facing conditions like cancer, organ failure, or severe burns.

In a recent session, learners explored their dreams through drawings, each backed by a little narrative. They then brought these illustrations to life using clay, transforming their 2D ideas into 3D creations.

Amanda, who works with the learners, explained the value of clay in this process.

“Working with clay helps develop fine motor skills and encourages thinking in 3D. You can move it, shape it, break it, and rebuild it. It’s therapeutic. With drawings, you’re limited, but clay allows them to interact, experiment, and express themselves in a tactile way.”

Alongside art, the school incorporates drama, music, and homework support, creating an environment where young patients can continue learning while processing big emotions.

Support from donors helps bridge funding gaps, ensuring these lessons continue to bring hope and healing to children at the hospital.
