HACT is providing the chance to drive home a dream while providing life-changing comfort and care to those who need it most.

Hillcrest, South Africa (31 March 2026) – The Hillcrest AIDS Centre Trust (HACT) is a registered non-profit organisation dedicated to supporting people affected by HIV/AIDS. Through care, prevention, community development, and income-generation initiatives, HACT has served thousands of families across KwaZulu-Natal for more than 30 years, providing holistic support and hope where it’s needed most.

To continue funding its vital programmes, HACT has launched a life-changing competition that offers one lucky supporter the chance to take home a brand-new car.

HACT is proud to participate in the Toyota Win-a-Car Competition – an initiative whose impact goes far beyond the thrill of the final draw. Last year, HACT sold the winning ticket, bringing tremendous joy to one fortunate recipient and fostering a genuine sense of pride among the organisation and its supporters.

But the true value of this campaign lies in the lives it touches every single day.

Funds raised go directly towards supporting HACT’s 24-bed hospice and palliative care inpatient unit. Here, individuals facing life-limiting illnesses receive compassionate, holistic care. Patients are treated with dignity, comfort and understanding, while their families are supported emotionally and psychosocially through incredibly difficult times.

The competition is a simple but powerful reminder that small actions matter. One ticket may seem like a small step, but together, those steps help ensure that care, dignity and hope continue to reach those who need it most.

By simply scanning a QR code, you could win a brand-new set of wheels while making a real difference in your community. The winner will be drawn on Comrades Marathon Race Day (14 June 2026) and announced by the appointed broadcaster at 16:45.

HACT extends its sincere thanks to everyone who supports this initiative. Your support helps change lives, one story at a time.

Sindi Mavimbela was bitten by the theatre bug as a high school learner. Seventeen years later, her love for performing arts has been passed down to her daughter, who is set to take the stage for The Little Mermaid Jr by the Young Performers’ Project.

Durban, South Africa (30 March 2026) – Acting and stage presence run in the family for Durban mother-daughter duo, Sindi and Azania Mavimbela. The pair share a special connection through the same youth theatre project – 17 years apart!

Sindi, an alumnus of the Young Performers’ Project (YPP), is now watching her daughter follow in her footsteps. Azania will be taking to the stage for The Little Mermaid Jr. nearly two decades after her mother performed with the very same project.

Azania, a learner at Crawford North Coast, plays Flounder the fish. Other leads are Ariel, played by Chloe Marot from St. Mary’s DSG (last seen in Shrek and Annie), and Sebastian, played by Khethukuthula Ngcobo from International School of Performing Arts.

In a heartwarming full circle moment, Azania’s mother, Sindi, a drama teacher, was bitten by the theatre bug as a high school learner acting in YPP’s 2009 production of Big River, the story of Huckleberry Finn, directed by the project’s fabulous founder, the late Themi Venturas.

After YPP, Sindi pursued a career on stage – even travelling to China, working with Disney and participating in teen Idols and X Factor. She has remained in theatre throughout her career, now teaching drama to the next generation of aspirant performers.

Sindi’s daughter Azania, entered the YPP process seventeen years after she first performed with YPP, as a junior performer in A Fairytale Christmas Carol last year, and so enjoyed it that she is back this year in a featured role.

Azania is loving her time with YPP, and plans to continue studying drama – but wants to incorporate her drama studies in the future, with medicine, specifically paediatrics, and use her drama training to better engage with young patients – like a modern-day Patch Adams.

“These stories are just joyous,” says YPP producer Des Govender,

“They are a testament to the organisation’s lasting influence. This poignant connection also highlights the profound impact of YPP’s programmes on the lives of its alumni who are giving back to their communities as arts educators and continue to work with young people in theatre. It is life-affirming and very exciting. Long may that continue!” says Des.

Inspired by Hans Christian Anderson’s beloved fairy tale, and based on the classic animated Disney movie, The Little Mermaid Jr is a hauntingly beautiful love story for the ages – perfect for the youthful 50-strong cast. This time around, the show features 30 senior performers and 21 junior performers.

The stage production is directed by Daisy Spencer, with choreography by Evashnee Pillay, music direction by Des Govender, sound design by Ant Govender, set and prop design by Nicolene Steyn and fabulous under-the-sea-inspired costumes by Kathy Singery.

Show Details

The Little Mermaid is showing at The Milkwood Theatre in Durban North over the Easter holidays from 2 – 12 April.

The first show is a special Relaxed Performance on Thursday, 2 April at 2.30 pm, where theatre etiquette guidelines are relaxed, and the performance is consciously calmed.

Scholars and pensioners 10% off any seats throughout.

The show runs for 65 minutes with no interval.

Springbok and Bafana Bafana captains united in Durban before Bafana’s clash against Panama, celebrating national pride.

Durban, South Africa (29 March 2026) – There’s just something special about seeing South Africa’s leaders come together, and this was one of those moments.

Siya Kolisi made a memorable stop at the Bafana Bafana camp in Durban, linking up with Ronwen Williams and the squad ahead of their international clash against Panama. And yes, he arrived in the newly released Bafana Bafana jersey, fully embracing the moment.

With the Springboks edging closer to their own return to action, Kolisi took time out to show support to the national football team, reminding them of the responsibility and pride that come with wearing the badge. It was a powerful show of unity between two of the country’s biggest sporting codes. And a reminder that, at the end of the day, it’s all one flag.

For Williams, the focus quickly shifted back to business on the pitch.

“We have analysed them, we have watched some video clips, and we have familiarised ourselves about them. They are a team we have to take seriously because they do not need a lot of chances to punish you, and that is what we saw in their last World Cup qualifier.”

The Bafana captain knew exactly what was at stake, especially against a side that turns small moments into big problems. Head coach Hugo Broos looked for a response from his team, backing them to rediscover the energy.

“The only thing I want to see is the real Bafana Bafana.”

As the countdown continues for both national teams in their respective seasons, this crossover moment offered a refreshing reminder of the unity within South African sport.

Bafana Bafana drew 1-1 to Panama.

Our kids are growing up in the heart of a digital world. One mama has created an endearing storybook to ensure her kids, and yours, don’t miss the magic happening right in front of them.

Durban, South Africa (26 March 2026) – In a world that never stops scrolling, kids are often the most vulnerable to the digital pull. One mom, however, is doing her part to ensure they don’t get lost in the noise – meeting them where they are to remind them of the magic that happens when they simply look up.

As a mom of two with a strong understanding of the digital world and the power of social media, based on her marketing background as a CEO of a digital agency, Daniela d’Hotman de Villiers is deeply aware of how children are growing up in it.

After a busy workday, Daniela found that her favourite time was bedtime, snuggled up reading stories that opened conversations and sparked imagination.

But one night, she looked at her son’s bookshelf and realised there weren’t any stories that spoke to the world her kids were actually growing up in, so she was moved to create one herself!

“That lived experience is what inspired me to write The Fox Who Forgot to Look Up – a story designed to meet kids where they are, in the world they’re inevitably growing up in,” Daniela shares.

The fun and insightful children’s book seeks to help youngsters develop healthy habits around technology, presence and connection. Inspired by her boys, it is the debut of Daniela’s Savvy Kids book series, dedicated to helping today’s little ones grow up human-first and connection-first, even when digital-first is the reality around them.

The fictional story follows the journey of Felix the fox, who can’t stop staring at his shiny screen. But one day, something extraordinary makes him finally look up – and everything changes!

The author has received positive feedback from moms admitting that the book was also a reminder to them, too, to look up and connect – not just their kids.

At heart, Daniela is a storyteller, mother, and advocate for raising emotionally intelligent kids in a world of technology and AI. Through this book (and many more she hopes to still write and publish), Daniela hopes to inspire more meaningful conversations – one bedtime story at a time!

When grief felt too heavy for one Grade 1 pupil to carry alone, her teacher stepped in to share the weight in the most beautiful way.

Durban, South Africa (27 March 2026) – Losing a loved one is a profoundly complex and difficult experience that few can truly prepare for. When Grade 1 educator Mbali MaHlela Bezuidenhout noticed one of her pupils struggling with the heavy grief of losing her father, she stepped in to offer comfort, especially during her hardest days.

In a touching Facebook post, Mbali shared the story of this young girl, who lost her father earlier this year.

“Some days are really hard for her, and she would talk to me about it, so I decided to start something with her to comfort her,” Mbali writes.

She encouraged the child to write about the things she missed about her dad, particularly on her bad days, so that during the holidays, when she goes to visit his tombstone with her mom, she could give him his letters.

“The excitement on her face this week as it’s almost time to take her letters home. It’s the only thing she’s talking about, so today we made an envelope for all the letters,” Mbali shares.

Her post includes an image showing some of the cards and letters written by the little girl, capturing the beautiful memories she keeps close to her heart.

The post has also warmed hearts online, with many people expressing how moved they were by Mbali’s compassion towards helping her pupil navigate grief.

“I pray my daughter gets a teacher like you when she starts school. Someone who’ll help her navigate her feelings because sometimes I don’t know what to say when she tells me she misses her dad,” one mother shared in the comments section.

Another teacher also shared:

“From one teacher to another. You are amazing. What a true blessing this precious child was placed with you. God knew she needed someone like you to get through these difficult moments. I often say to parents that we always want to build a relationship with their children and often treat them as our own. This little girl is going to remember you for the rest of her life and the impact you had in such a difficult time.”

These are just two comments out of so many others, which all share similar warm sentiments. And we couldn’t agree more!

Mbali, what you have done for this girl isn’t just heartwarming, it’s healing. Thank you for seeing her, being in her corner and ensuring the memories of her dad live on to bring her comforting joy.

For Coach Owami Zama, sports have always been about much more than a scoreboard – they’re about breaking barriers and unlocking potential. And now, he’s being celebrated for it!

Durban, South Africa (26 March 2026) – True coaching isn’t just about strategy; it’s about seeing the champion in every athlete. This best captures the ethic of Made for More’s Head of Sports, Coach Owami Zama, who has been officially nominated by the KZN Department of Sport for the prestigious “Coach of the Year” award!

This nomination recognises his heart for athletes with disabilities, his excellence in coaching, and his dedication to seeing every athlete thrive on and off the field.

His journey with the organisation began back in 2019, when he first joined Made for More as a passionate volunteer.

“I volunteered as a water assistant for a surf therapy session in Scottburgh, and I just didn’t stop after that,” Owami tells Good Things Guy.

Photo Credit: Made for More via Facebook

He has grown to become a crucial part of the everyday programmes the organisation runs and has coached para-athletes on national and international levels.

“What really kept me there was being able to help people with disabilities enjoy the ocean. I continued my volunteer journey with Made for More and progressed from volunteer to full-time adaptive sports coach, as well as having the honour of wearing Green and Gold.”

Owami says that looking back on his journey with Made for More, it has been nothing short of incredible, and he can only thank God for that.

The nomination for the Coach of the Year award is already a win for him, as he puts it:

“When I was a volunteer, being selected for a prestigious award as this was never on my mind. This nomination is already a win to me.”

The recognition has brought massive pride not just for himself but for his entire team at Made for More, a Durban-based organisation that aims to include, equip and empower people with disabilities, especially through sport.

“From adaptive surfing coaching on the world stage to investing in athletes week in and week out here in KZN, Owami leads with humility, passion and sacrifice no one ever sees. Massive congratulations, Coach Owami! We are so stoked for you and wish you all the best,” Made for More congratulated.

Congratulations, Coach, we commend the incredible work you do and wish you all the best!

From national records to world rankings, South African freedivers impress at the Durban championships and gear up for Budapest in June.

Durban, South Africa (23 March 2026) – Big performances, national records and plenty of excitement! The 2026 AIDA South Africa Pool National Championships made quite a splash in Durban this past weekend.

Held at the Rachel Finlayson Pool, the event may have featured a small field of just six athletes, but what it lacked in numbers, it made up for in energy, support and standout results. Across the four pool disciplines, athletes delivered an impressive 15 personal bests.

Leading the charge was Bevin Reynolds, who dominated the women’s category and rewrote the record books along the way. Reynolds broke three of the four South African national records and now sits third in the world in the Dynamic Bifin (DYNB) discipline, thanks to a remarkable 233m performance. With the AIDA Pool World Championships in Budapest coming up in June, she’s firmly positioned as one to watch on the global stage.

Angelique van der Hoogen, Secretary of AIDA South Africa was extremely proud, saying this indicates that they can compete against the best of the best.

“This performance is a clear indication of the level South African athletes are capable of achieving on the international stage. We are incredibly proud of Bevin and the wider athlete group, and we are excited to see what lies ahead at Worlds.”

The competition also had an international flavour, with Mauritian athlete Charles Ducray Giblot making his mark by breaking all four of his country’s national records.

While KwaZulu-Natal remains a smaller hub for the sport locally, the championship proved that talent runs deep. Take freediving, it continues to grow in popularity, combining physical endurance, mental strength and precision in a truly unique way.

With five South African athletes set to represent the country at the upcoming World Championships, the momentum is building. And now  all eyes turn to June as they prepare to take on the world stage in Budapest.

Northwood School has generously donated a pile of cosy mattresses to support the naptime of many little ones in local ECD centres.

Durban, South Africa (23 March 2026) – “The Princess and the Pea” is a fairy tale by Hans Christian Andersen, telling the story of a princess so sensitive she could feel the discomfort of a single uncooked pea hidden beneath twenty mattresses.

In a delightful parallel to this tale, the garage at the Domino Foundation’s offices was recently filled with twenty mattresses (yes, twenty!) ready to be delivered to very small princesses (and princes) at Early Childhood Development centres. Thanks to the community-minded generosity of Northwood School, these mattresses will support children partnering with the NPO.

Estate manager, Sheldon Stevenson, explained that the Northwood’s boarding establishment is currently undergoing a makeover, and with Domino being so close to the school, it made perfect sense to donate them to a trusted organisation that would find them a deserving home.

“These mattresses will be recovered by ladies in the community and then given to some of the centres we work with and naptime will become so much more restful for all concerned,” shared Domino’s ECD liaison manager, Zanele Nzimakwe.

Zanele added that most toddlers need a midday nap until they are between 3 and 4 to help soothe and alleviate many behavioural challenges like meltdowns, clumsiness, whining and difficulty with focus.

Domino’s ECD programme works with 36 ECD centres in and around Durban – most of which still need comfortable mattresses to make little people’s 12 o’clock snooze break part of their routine, which really makes a difference.

Through this thoughtful donation, Northwood School has ensured that more children in the Domino Foundation’s care have a soft place to dream and the restful sleep they need to grow, learn, and thrive.

Anyone with a mattress in a reasonable state of repair which needs a new home can contact Zanele at ecdlink@domino.org.za or on  031 110 0730.

Three girls arrived at the Isiaiah 54 Children’s Sanctuary with nothing but the clothes on their backs. But thanks to a woman’s kindness, they won’t leave without knowing they are valued.

Durban, South Africa (23 March 2026) – When one kind woman learned of three girls who had arrived at the Isiaiah 54 Children’s Sanctuary after their once happy world had turned into a horror story they never asked for, she was moved to help.

The girls arrived with nothing but the clothes on their backs. The woman purchased and packed the necessary clothing and essentials they would need over the next few days.

She didn’t need to know them personally or hear every detail of their story; she simply cared enough to ensure these innocent souls were reminded that they are valued and loved.

She dropped off the three Brave Bags at the children’s home, and when the girls woke up the next morning to their bags filled with new clothes, underwear, pyjamas, sweets and even lip gloss, they were completely over the moon.

“They could not believe that someone who doesn’t even know them cared enough to do something so special for them,” said Isiaiah 54 Children’s Sanctuary’s Jo.

They asked many questions. One of them even asked if they could keep their bag.

The woman’s single act of kindness touched three little lives with a wave of comfort they never saw coming, and during a time they truly needed it.

“Moments like this remind us how powerful a simple act of kindness can be. You helped three girls feel seen, valued and cared for during a very confusing and scary time in their lives.

“Thank you for being part of our village, the people who step in so that no child feels forgotten or left out,” Jo said.

The organisation emphasised the importance of Brave Bags – how they restore dignity, create hope and make children feel special at a moment when their world feels like it has fallen apart.

The police are working hard to find a safe place where the girls can stay together.

We join Isiaiah 54 in applauding this donor for stepping into the ‘village’ these children need – reminding them, through her kindness, that they truly matter.

Baby Line will be delivering more than just counselling and support at their upcoming visit to a Durban Hospital – they will be bringing affirmation to remind every mother that she is deeply valued and cheered on.

Durban, South Africa (22 March 2026) – Baby Line will be wrapping new mothers in a blanket of care and encouragement at Durban’s Victoria Mxenge Hospital in a few days, affirming that they are seen and supported.

Each care bag they deliver will include essentials such as baby clothing, toiletries and hygiene products. These are small but meaningful items that can make a significant difference during the first weeks after birth. For many mothers, these items provide both practical relief and reassurance that they are not alone during a vulnerable time.

The initiative aims to ease the overwhelming early days of motherhood, particularly for women facing financial or social challenges.

In addition to distributing care bags, Baby Line volunteers also spend time in maternity wards connecting with mothers, celebrating newborns and offering encouragement and emotional support. The visits create space for conversation, listening and shared moments of joy as mothers begin their journey with their new babies.

Baby Line is an online and telephone counselling and support service for vulnerable mothers in crisis. According to Baby Line’s National Coordinator, Tatum Teunissen, the hospital visits have become a deeply meaningful part of the organisation’s work.

“Meeting the moms and hearing their stories is incredibly powerful. Many of these women are in very difficult circumstances, yet the love they have for their babies is huge,” says Teunissen.

“Sometimes something as simple as a pack of wet wipes or a baby outfit can bring real relief and encouragement in those first overwhelming days. Our hope is that every mother we meet leaves knowing that someone cares and that she is not alone.”

The organisation conducts visits to different hospitals each month to reach mothers across multiple communities. As the programme grows, it hopes to expand its reach and provide support to even more mothers and newborns across South Africa.

The upcoming visit on 24 March will see volunteers once again stepping into maternity wards to remind mothers that a caring community stands beside them as they begin this new chapter.
