It took a lick of paint and a few amazing volunteers to turn an old classroom at Kranskloof Primary into a space bursting with stories. The new library, set up in 10 days, honours a late volunteer.
KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa (24 August 2025) – An unused classroom at Kranskloof Primary was little more than four blank walls and echoes for a while. But all that changed when the Robin Hood Foundation and its army of volunteers rolled up their sleeves in a mission to make pupils’ days a little brighter with books.
In just ten days, they transformed the forgotten space into a colourful library, packed with books, games, and corners made for dreaming.

Every brushstroke and book on the shelf was a gift. Local companies like Naidu Consulting, SA Harvest and Thomas More College chipped in, while volunteers brought the school’s new book nook to life.
“It really did take a village. Every single part of this library was donated and built through collective generosity,” wrote Robin Hood Foundation.
An artist named Daisy sprinkled a bit of magic, too, turning the walls into a wild mural that brought the sea to the library.
A special part of this story lies in the name above the library’s door. The Ian Manzie Library.
“Ian was the Robin Hood Foundation’s longest-serving volunteer, a man whose kindness ran deep and whose laughter filled every room. When he passed away earlier this year, the community knew his legacy needed a home.”

A wholesome moment came on opening day, when Ian’s wife, Joan, cut the ribbon.
“This is our small way of saying: thank you, Ian — you are missed, and your legacy will live on here forever,” said the NPO.
After 10 days of selfless work, young minds got to meet their brand new space for stories, imagination and creativity.
“To everyone who played a part — from the companies who backed us…to every individual who donated books, painted walls, or gave their time, we thank you. This was togetherness in action,” the foundation wrote.
