The Pietermaritzburg cyclist will travel to the Cape of Good Hope and back to raise awareness and funds for the rural NPO supporting underprivileged learners.

Pietermaritzburg, South Africa (19 March 2026) – From Hope Valley Farm School in KwaZulu-Natal to the Cape of Good Hope and back, Nathan Michell is about to take on a cycling journey like no other. 3,500km for a cause close to his heart. It’s called Cycle for Hope, and the mission is simple: raise awareness and funds for Hope Valley Farm School, a local NPO giving underprivileged children a chance to build a brighter future.

“I’ve always had it on my heart to do a fundraiser for this school. During my gap year, we worked closely with them, and now I’m finally in a position to do something about it.”

Hope Valley Farm School operates on a rural farm, providing learners from farmworker families and nearby informal settlements with access to quality education that they might not otherwise have.

“They’re giving these kids opportunities that can change the course of their lives. Supporting that felt like the right thing to do.”

Cycling isn’t new to Nathan. He’s taken on the Cape Town Cycle Tour, and other challenges over the years. However, this is his most ambitious one yet! Preparing for 3,500km of cycling while balancing part-time online studies and his role as a sports coach at a local school takes discipline. For Nathan, the journey is about more than distance.

“It’s about raising awareness for the school, inspiring others, and showing what can be achieved when you commit to a cause.”

While he hasn’t launched a formal campaign, Nathan has set things up so donations go directly to Hope Valley Farm School.

The adventure begins on 6 July, and Nathan hopes to finish around 22 July, cycling with all his gear along the way.

“It’s going to be tough, but every challenge is worth it if it benefits the learners at the school.”
