Learners at Alberton High School swapped traditional school bags for creative alternatives, bringing their books in everything from buckets to wheelbarrows.

Johannesburg, South Africa (30 March 2026) – This is bound to bring all the laughs and creativity, too. Classrooms at Alberton High School looked a little different, but for all the good reasons.

The school’s “Anything But a School Bag” day turned an ordinary school morning into a full-on display of creativity, as learners arrived carrying their books in just about everything except a traditional school bag.

And they did not hold back!

From buckets to suitcases. It didn’t stop there. Some learners pushed the idea even further, showing up with wheelbarrows, trolleys, and even baby prams to get their books from home to class.

One learner managed to turn a tyre into a carrier. There were trays, cones, and boxes in the mix too. While the day was all about fun, there were still a few ground rules, keeping things safe, practical, and school-appropriate. But within those limits, learners had the freedom to get as creative as they wanted.

For a day, the usual routine made way for something lighter, giving learners a chance to have fun.

One of the country’s most beloved choirs lost its founder this week. John Tungay passed away on 22 March, leaving behind a legacy of almost six decades in music. One that the Drakies just honoured so beautifully.

Drakensberg, South Africa (25 March 2026) – On 22 March, the founder of the world-renowned Drakensberg Boys Choir School, Mr. John Tungay, passed away.

The school shared the unfortunate news with their community this week.

“It is with deep sadness that the Drakensberg Boys Choir School mourns the passing of our founder, Mr. John Tungay, on 22 March. As a community, we honour a visionary whose faith, courage, and conviction in the power of music gave rise to one of South Africa’s most cherished institutions.” it said.

In the early ’60s, John was a choirmaster at the Trinity Congregational Church. Around this time, he approached his parents, who owned a farm in the Cathkin Valley, with an idea. He wanted to turn it into a choir school.

A few short years later, the Drakensberg Boys Choir School flung open its farmhouse doors.

Now, the world-class institution in the valleys holds a torch that continues to light up the lives and the voices of thousands of young men with incredible talent.

“When establishing the school in 1967, Mr. Tungay planted more than a choir — he planted a mission grounded in ministry, excellence, and the shaping of young men for lives of purpose and service. From those humble beginnings grew an iconic South African institution whose influence has echoed across continents. Because of his vision, generations of Drakies have carried our music across the world as proud ambassadors of South Africa’s rich cultural heritage. His legacy extends far beyond the stage. The boys who leave our valley today — confident, principled, and compassionate — stand as living proof of the dream he dared to pursue nearly six decades ago.”

The Drakensberg Boys Choir is known and loved around the world. Boys who come to the valley to find their voices leave as young men. Shaped, says the school, to be confident, principled and compassionate.

Every one of them carries something of John Tungay’s original vision with them when they go.

“As we grieve, we also give thanks for a life so purposefully lived. The song of the Drakensberg Boys Choir — the harmony of discipline, joy, faith, and excellence — exists because he believed it could. We honour him, we remember him, and we commit to carrying his vision forward. To the Tungay family, we extend our heartfelt sympathy and prayers. May his legacy live on in every note sung and every life shaped by the school he founded. May the Lord bless his memory, and may his song continue in all of us.”

The choir has dedicated their moving rendition of Mzwandile Mabuza’s ‘Duduz’umoya Wami’ to Mr Tungay and his family. We’ve shared their moving tribute below.

A new astro hockey field at Hoërskool Overkruin is opening doors for young talent while bringing the school and wider community together.

Pretoria, South Africa (24 March 2026) – A brand-new astro hockey field is changing the game at Hoërskool Overkruin in Pretoria, opening up exciting opportunities for learners while bringing the wider community closer together.

The project, made possible through the support of Unite180 Church, marks a major step forward for the school’s sporting facilities. It all started with mere conversations. But now, those conversations have changed into something tangible.

For years, the school’s hockey teams had to make do with a grass field, often struggling during rainy periods when conditions made training and matches difficult. Competing with schools that already had astro facilities also proved challenging, limiting both performance and development.

That’s now a thing of the past. The new field offers a professional-standard space where learners can train and play throughout the year. Beyond hockey, it also creates room for fitness training, physical education, and other extracurricular activities.

Learners are eager to make the most of the upgraded space, while parents and staff have welcomed the investment in both sport and student development. There’s a renewed sense of pride across the school, with the astro field quickly becoming a central point of energy and activity.

It’s not just the school that benefits. The facility has already helped launch the Ratels Hockey Club, drawing in members from the surrounding community and creating a new platform for both junior and senior players to get involved in the sport. Plans are also in place to make the field available to nearby primary schools, helping grow hockey at grassroots level.

More than just a new surface to play on, the astro field represents a space where talent can develop and a community can come together around something positive.

A Pretoria primary school stopped everything to celebrate their security guard on his 54th birthday.

Pretoria, South Africa (20 March 2026) – This story made our whole team smile, and we just had to share it!

Jacob Maredi is the security guard at Laerskool Pretoria Oos in Pretoria. Has been for 28 years. Every morning he is already at the gate before the first bell where he greets kids by name, helps parents in and out, and even sorts the traffic when the robot goes out.

Every day he shows up with the biggest smile and the best energy. He’s 54. He works long hours, locks up after night sports, and then still finds the time to go for a run afterwards! He’s a legend.

Two Grade 7 moms, Frances and Marna, decided his birthday this year wasn’t going to pass by without a big celebration. They started a WhatsApp group, parents piled in, and the idea just grew and grew until it turned into a full school procession – an ‘optog’ – on Thursday morning.

“From pre-school all the way to Grade 7, learners walked together through the front gates – singing, cheering, blowing whistles, and holding handmade posters and banners.” says Frances.

It was the biggest show of love for Jacob.

The gates were done up with balloons and flags. Someone’s dad brought a portrait he’d painted of Jacob. Cupcakes for the whole school and beyond. Chocolates, vouchers, gifts from families who’ve been greeted by Jacob’s smile every morning for years. Even people walking past on the street stopped and came over to wish him.

Oh, and he got crowned as ‘The Golden Osie Security Guard’ with an actual crown and sash to match!

Jacob had zero clue it was coming. When asked why he thinks people love him, he said that it could perhaps be his kindness. A man who knows its one of the greatest superpowers of all!

“I did not expect it at all. I felt like I was flying. It was a very special day. I will never forget it.” said Jacob. “I love the children, especially the little ones. I enjoy working with them and helping them. I think people love me because I am friendly and helpful.”

Frances shared the note she wrote for him, which shows the genuine love and appreciation an entire school community holds for their Golden Osie hero. Originally, it was written in Afrikaans; we translated it.

“Dear Jacob,

Your smile and kindness have greeted us (the Geldenhuys family) warmly for eight years – every single day at the gate. You have no idea what you mean to this school. You are the coolest guy in Roper Street – the place where we’ll always find you.

Your kindness plays a huge role in the life of every child starting out at Osies. You teach them about respect and friendliness.

I want to say thank you to you.

We all hope you had a wonderful day and a great birthday, and that you enjoyed every moment.

With much love from every Barefoot-Osie and Osie parent.”

The Pietermaritzburg cyclist will travel to the Cape of Good Hope and back to raise awareness and funds for the rural NPO supporting underprivileged learners.

Pietermaritzburg, South Africa (19 March 2026) – From Hope Valley Farm School in KwaZulu-Natal to the Cape of Good Hope and back, Nathan Michell is about to take on a cycling journey like no other. 3,500km for a cause close to his heart. It’s called Cycle for Hope, and the mission is simple: raise awareness and funds for Hope Valley Farm School, a local NPO giving underprivileged children a chance to build a brighter future.

“I’ve always had it on my heart to do a fundraiser for this school. During my gap year, we worked closely with them, and now I’m finally in a position to do something about it.”

Hope Valley Farm School operates on a rural farm, providing learners from farmworker families and nearby informal settlements with access to quality education that they might not otherwise have.

“They’re giving these kids opportunities that can change the course of their lives. Supporting that felt like the right thing to do.”

Cycling isn’t new to Nathan. He’s taken on the Cape Town Cycle Tour, and other challenges over the years. However, this is his most ambitious one yet! Preparing for 3,500km of cycling while balancing part-time online studies and his role as a sports coach at a local school takes discipline. For Nathan, the journey is about more than distance.

“It’s about raising awareness for the school, inspiring others, and showing what can be achieved when you commit to a cause.”

While he hasn’t launched a formal campaign, Nathan has set things up so donations go directly to Hope Valley Farm School.

The adventure begins on 6 July, and Nathan hopes to finish around 22 July, cycling with all his gear along the way.

“It’s going to be tough, but every challenge is worth it if it benefits the learners at the school.”

Reading has the power to change a child’s world, and that world just got so much bigger for the learners at Masivuke Primary.

Cape Town, South Africa (12 March 2026) – A new library has opened its doors at Masivuke Primary School in the township of Philippi, Cape Town.

The school serves a community that still navigates the lasting effects of inequality, and with limited infrastructure and learning resources, building strong reading foundations hasn’t always been easy. This library marks the start of a new chapter.

It’s the first to open under the Beyond Words project, a national literacy initiative led by the Cotton On Foundation in partnership with the Nomzamo Lighthouse Foundation and The Bookery. Their mission is to bring books, proper reading spaces and support into schools where those things have often been missing.

Sadly, around 81% of Grade 4 learners in South Africa cannot read for meaning, and many schools still don’t have functioning libraries. When children grow up without easy access to books, learning to read well can become a huge challenge.

The Beyond Words programme seeks to change that. Masivuke Primary was chosen as the first school, which opened this week. More schools are set to welcome Beyond Words libraries over time.

At each partner school, the programme will build or refurbishing libraries, provide age-appropriate books that speak to the local context and introduce digital tools like tablets or laptops to support reading programmes. Teachers will also receive training to guide learners in reading as part of daily school life.

“Every child deserves to experience the joy and power of reading. Collaborating with the Cotton On Foundation and the Nomzamo Lighthouse Foundation to bring the Beyond Words Campaign to life ensures that more children will have access to books and beautiful spaces to read them in, said Shelley De Wet, Managing Director at The Bookery. “Working together takes the impact further and deeper – showing children they matter, their voices count, and they can imagine and shape their own future,” she added.

The opening brought loads of excitement to the school. The event was attended by internationally recognised actress and philanthropist Nomzamo Mbatha, Western Cape Minister of Education David Maynier, Head of the Cotton On Foundation worldwide Tim Diamond and author Sihle Nontshokweni.

“The opening of this library is deeply meaningful for all of us,” says Tim Diamond, General Manager of the Cotton On Foundation. “Since 2012, we’ve invested more than 175 million Rand in South Africa, supporting some of the country’s most at-risk young people. And our commitment to the future remains as strong as ever, with a focus on Education, youth mental health and environmental impact,” he added.

The Cape Philharmonic is striking all the right notes across schools in the Mother City.

Cape Town, South Africa (05 March 2026) – The Cape Philharmonic Orchestra (CPO) visited Prestwich Primary recently, and the kids sang and clapped right through the concert.

For most of them, it was the first time they’d ever seen a live orchestra.

The CPO does this every year, reaching around 15,000 schoolchildren across Cape Town. Previous school concerts have been hosted at Kenridge Primary, Silversands, Jan Kriel School, Parklands College and many more.

Thousands of kids get to experience live orchestral music, which creates a positive influence early on.

In past years, the CPO has included a walkthrough of the instruments – how they work, what they sound like solo – before the full performance begins. Their sets generally mix classical, popular and film music, so there’s always something a child recognises.

Research shows that early exposure to music builds confidence, concentration and creativity in children. Getting kids into a concert hall – or bringing the concert hall to them – plants a seed that music can be accessible, moving, and worthy of pursuing.

“Our Schools’ Concerts programme is an indispensable part of our role in the musical life of the broader Cape Town community. Thanks to all the school administrators who make it possible for us to share the joy of music with children.” the CPO shared.

The beloved Teacher Rabatho delights little learners with playground games, tea-time fun, and a heartwarming “you too” trend moment, leaving parents calling him a real gem.

Johannesburg, South Africa (02 March 2026) – At St. Andrews Preschool, every day is a little brighter thanks to Teacher Rawatu. Known for his playful spirit and genuine care, he has captured the hearts of the little learners and their parents.

In a fun social media trend, people often respond ‘you too’ automatically when someone says something like ‘enjoy your day,’ even if it doesn’t quite make sense. Like when a waiter says ‘enjoy your meal’, and you reply ‘you too.’

Well, Teacher Rabatho joined in on the trend with his little learners. From painting to tea time, and from playground races to learning activities, he immerses himself in the kids’ world as if he were one of them.

He’s not just supervising, he plays, laughs, and learns alongside them, making school a place where every child feels included and encouraged.

Parents have been quick to praise him online. “My daughter is 11 now, and he still waves at us every time we drive past the school. He is a real gem,” shared one. Another called him an “earthly angel,” highlighting how his friendliness left a lasting impression.

Thanks to him, the preschool is a place to learn and a place where every child feels safe.

A hilarious school trend takes over as one learner’s “quick” bathroom break becomes a full-blown adventure around school.

South Africa (25 February 2026) – It’s the classroom struggle everyone knows too well.

One learner asks, “Can I go to the bathroom?” The teacher replies, “Can you just wait for your classmate to come back?” And that’s where the chaos begins.

In a hilarious take on a trending social media skit, Paul Roos Gymnasium School brought the joke to life. Showing exactly what Tiaan is up to while his classmates wait patiently.

Instead of making a quick stop, Tiaan turns his “bathroom break” into a full school adventure. He’s spotted strolling through the corridors, paging through books in the library, grabbing something at the tuck shop, getting a fresh haircut, playing musical chairs, helping clean up, squeezed in a session at the gym, sky-gazing, and even hopping onto a motorcycle for good measure.

Meanwhile, back in the classroom, time stands still.

The video perfectly captures a relatable school moment. Teachers often stagger bathroom breaks so too many learners aren’t out at once, which makes complete sense. But for the person waiting? It can feel like the longest 5 minutes of your life.

Breakfast is the most important meal of the day. That’s why security teams and The Linden Meander are rallying to keep the porridge coming for over 60 learners at Casa do Sol school who rely on it!

Johannesburg, South Africa (10 February 2026) – When little ones start the day nourished, they’re far more likely to perform better academically, feel more focused and alert, and maintain healthy habits in the long run.

The Linden Meander, Beagle Watch and SCP Security have launched a donation drive in support of Casa do Sol – a school catering for learners with intellectual disabilities and special needs between the ages 6 and 21.

The school offers learners an encouraging, inclusive and understanding academic environment focused on life skills, functional academic training, and vocational skills. It provides specialised, individualised, and, when needed, small-group teaching environments that empowers learners to lead an independent life.

The school supports over 60 pupils with breakfast every morning.

Many of these learners come from economically challenged backgrounds. With the school also battling underfunding, the heroes who keep Linden safe, along with the community, are rallying to keep the school’s brekkie runs going, too.

“Just over sixty of these children are given breakfast on arrival at school every day, and this is where we ask your help please.” the teams share.

Throughout the month of love, the Linden community and surrounds, are encouraged to donate long-life milk and porridge toward the drive. Every bag or box of pap, oats, sorghum and mabela porridge will go towards a warm and nutritious brekkie that supports a young learner.

Those who wish to support are encouraged to drop off their donations at Potted Glass Studio, at Beagle Watch in Fairland or SCP Offices in Northcliff – doors are open 24/7 at SCP. Find out more here.
