Joburg at Night: How a Bicycle Ride Changed Everything

There’s something magical about Joburg after dark and the Banditz Bicycle Club has found the perfect way to show it off.

Johannesburg, South Africa (14 September 2025) – Johannesburg is often spoken about in extremes. For some, it’s chaos, traffic and a place to avoid after dark. For others, it’s energy, history and life bursting at every corner. For Wesley and Lindsay Fletcher, it became something completely unexpected… a rediscovery of their home city, thanks to two wheels, a helmet and a whole lot of courage.

The couple recently wrote to us after listening to the Good Things Guy podcast episode with Robbie Brozin, where we spoke about Joburg’s magic.

Inspired by that, they shared their own story of how a small cycle shop on 44 Stanley shifted their view of Johannesburg forever.

“About a year ago, we joined the Banditz Bicycle Club at 44 Stanley for a cycle into Joburg inner city and it was the coolest thing we have ever done,” Lindsay explained. “For a mere R200 you’re given a bike, helmet and a guide, and as a group you ride into town after dark. We were incredibly nervous about going ‘into town’ and almost pulled out at the last minute.”

But what awaited them wasn’t the Joburg they feared, it was something completely different.

The first surprise came almost immediately.

“My first thought was definitely how clean it was,” Lindsay recalled. “There was very little rubbish or litter lying around, if any at all. One of our friends even left his valuables at the shop, just in case. But within minutes, we started to realise this wasn’t the Joburg we’d been warned about.”

The ride took them deep into the city, stopping at iconic landmarks. At Gandhi Square, Lindsay remembers feeling an energy so strong she forgot her fears.

“We stopped at Ghandi Square and I felt so inspired and excited to be there, I whipped my phone out and started taking photos. It didn’t even cross my mind that we could have been a target. The atmosphere was electric… people closing up shops, heading home, the city alive. It shifted my view completely.”

The Banditz guides added another layer, offering snippets of history about places like the Rand Club and the old Post Office. And when taxis slowed down or were guided to let the cyclists through, the group realised something even bigger… Joburg isn’t against you; it’s just busy living.

For Wes, who grew up in the northern suburbs, this was his first time really seeing the inner city.

“I think whether you’ve grown up in Joburg or not, it’s definitely an experience that leaves you in awe of Joburg’s history but also with a sense that there is a lot of good happening in the city,” he said.

Their passion didn’t end with that ride. Since then, the couple has explored more of their city, from taking part in the iconic Ponte Challenge (yes, climbing Ponte Tower from basement to top!) to spending a day with the Joburg Heritage Association at Turffontein racecourse. Each adventure pulled them deeper into the stories, people, and hidden gems of Johannesburg.

And when they told friends and family?

“They were shocked,” Lindsay laughed. “We were so passionate about it and told everyone. I don’t think anyone has taken us up on the offer yet, but they’re curious about how we did it and why we’d want to.”

The Fletchers have since made a promise to themselves… to seek out something different in their city every month. Not a beach. Not a mountain. Something Joburg.

“We have recently been overseas and I know it’s cliché, but there really is nothing better than coming home,” they said. “We often lose sight of how creative and proud we are as South Africans, but there’s something fulfilling about choosing to appreciate the place you live in. Joburg is literally the golden city – from its history to its sunsets to the nature of the people around you.”

For them, it’s about perspective. Yes, the city has its challenges. The potholes, the taxis, the frustrations – they exist. But so do the Springboks, the colourful markets, the stories and the people who keep showing up, making a difference every day.

And sometimes, it takes a small cycling club to remind you of that.

Banditz run their rides every Thursday evening, guiding groups safely through different parts of Joburg. The bikes are vintage, the guides are passionate and the memories will stay with you long after the ride is done.
