This week, we’re spotlighting courage on wheels… the SARZA volunteers who step into danger so others can make it home safely. With Budget Insurance, good things come to good South Africans.
Johannesburg, South Africa (30 July 2025) – South Africa is full of people who quietly give their time, energy and expertise to make the world a little kinder… a little safer. And this week on “Good Things with Brent Lindeque”, we had the honour of chatting to a group who quite literally drive towards danger to help others. The incredible volunteers behind Search and Rescue South Africa, or SARZA.
SARZA isn’t your typical emergency service. These are volunteer 4×4 owners who have turned their vehicles (and their weekends) into lifelines. With regional teams based in 6 of our 9 provinces, SARZA works closely with the likes of EMS, Disaster Management, SAPS, the Air Force, NSRI, K9 teams and the Mountain Club’s search and rescue crews. It’s a nationwide network of everyday people doing extraordinary things.
“Each year, SARZA gets over 200 calls for assistance,” they shared with us during the interview. “And in more than half of those cases, our volunteers are mobilised, leaving their families, often in the dead of night, to head into the unknown, all because someone, somewhere needs help.”
From rugged cliffs to remote bush, flood zones to earthquake-rattled cities, SARZA steps in when it counts, offering everything from search and rescue to logistics, communications and transport in the most challenging conditions imaginable.
