South African designer Leon Kluge and his team secured both Grand Gold and Best on Show at the Shenzhen International Flower Show with unique designs.

Shenzhen, China (27 March 2026) – What started as a behind-the-scenes build in a foreign country has now turned into a major win. South African designer Leon Kluge and his team have officially taken top honours at the Shenzhen International Flower Show, walking away with both the Grand Gold Award and Best on Show.

It’s a massive achievement at one of the biggest flower shows in Asia and a proud moment not just for the team on the ground, but for South Africa as a whole.

Speaking after the awards ceremony, Leon shared just how much the moment meant:

“South Africa won the Grand Gold Award. Not only the Grand Gold, we are also Best on Show. That means South Africa’s garden here at the Shenzhen Flower Show is number one.”

From the architecture right through to the plant selection, the winning garden stood out for its unique blend of influences, combining Asian design elements with strong African inspiration. It’s a fusion that clearly resonated with judges and visitors.

“Representing a mixture of Asian design and African influence in the design. Not only the architecture, but also the plants. And I’m very proud to take this on.”

Just days ago, the team was still deep in the build phase, working against time, language barriers, and the challenges of creating something world-class far from home. Now, that hard work has paid off in the best way possible.

“Thank you so much for all the encouraging messages from everybody back home every day, we managed to pull it off.”

After conquering one of the world’s biggest flower shows with two major awards secured, the team will soon be bringing their success back to South Africa.

Just days to go before the South African designer is hard at work building his garden at the Shenzhen International Flower Show, one of Asia’s biggest showcases.

Shenzhen, China (23 March 2026) – With just days to go before one of Asia’s biggest garden showcases opens its doors, South African designer Leon Kluge is right in the thick of it and building something special on the global stage.

Representing the country at the Shenzhen International Flower Show, Leon has been sharing behind-the-scenes glimpses of the intense build process. Positioned right at the entrance of the show, his garden is already taking shape, with structural elements like walkways, decking and water features being carefully put into place.

While a few trees are already planted, the real magic is still to come. For now, it’s all about construction. With water elements only arriving late at night and finishing touches happening around the clock. This shows that it’s no ordinary setup.

Burnt branch textures and flowing water features are slowly bringing the garden to life, with every detail adding to the final vision.

Leon is no stranger to international recognition, having previously made waves on the global stage.

Not forgetting the prestigious Landscape of the Year title, cementing his reputation as one of South Africa’s leading garden designers on the international stage. Now, with just four days to go, all eyes are on how his latest creation will come together and how South Africa will once again shine through his work.

The seventh edition of the Twyg Awards invites entries across ten categories, spotlighting designers and brands shaping a more sustainable fashion future.

Cape Town, South Africa (25 September 2025) – The countdown is on for the 7th annual Twyg Sustainable Fashion Awards, with nominations now officially open! The awards have become one of the most anticipated platforms for recognising designers who are proving that fashion can be stylish, ethical, and environmentally responsible. This year, there are ten categories, each one celebrating a different aspect of sustainable design, circular systems, and social impact.

Last year’s winners offer some serious inspiration. Rachel Mia’s Apricity turned heads with sustainably crafted, avant-garde, genderless designs that carried a bold global influence, while Thobeka Mbane, a highly regarded South African stylist and cultural strategist, impressed with her vibrant, unconventional approach.

Apricity

Jackie May, who is the founder of Twyg encourages all designers to showcase their work.

“The Twyg Sustainable Fashion Awards honour the designers, brands and creatives who are using fashion as a tool for environmental and social change. We invite everyone to help us spotlight those working towards a fairer, slower, and more sustainable fashion system.”

Two of the most significant awards come with prize money of R100 000 each. The Emerging Designer Award recognises up-and-coming talent, while the Changemaker Award will be chosen from the pool of category winners.

The Accessory Award shines a light on brands creating ethical, durable, and innovative accessories using locally sourced or recycled materials, while the Farm-to-Fashion Award celebrates those who prioritise traceable supply chains and regenerative textile practices.

The Innovative Design and Materials Award focuses on creativity that pushes boundaries. The awards also go continental, with the Pan-African Artisanal Fashion Award recognising designers who preserve craft techniques like weaving, embroidery and dyeing, while merging them with contemporary fashion.

Beyond design, the Retail Award acknowledges businesses promoting circularity through resale, rentals and swap shops, while the Tastemaker Award honours individuals using influence and storytelling to inspire sustainable choices. The Trans-seasonal Design Award encourages timeless collections that break away from the fast-fashion cycle, and the Student Award creates a platform for young talent still in training to showcase fresh and bold ideas.

The 2025 edition is set to be one of the strongest yet. So whether you are a designer, student, or creative voice in the space, Twyg is calling for nominations that show how fashion can be a force for good. You can make your submissions here.

Jackie May highlighted why South Africa must reimagine its relationship with textiles from natural fibres and cultural heritage to the everyday choices we make about what we wear.

Cape Town, South Africa (21 August 2025) – For Jackie May, fashion is far more than fabric and design. It is a medium to tell stories, a mirror to society, and a powerful space to rethink how we live, consume, and care. As the co-founder of African Textile Talks alongside Priya Ramkissoon from Imiloa Collective and moderator at the recent Cape Town summit, Jackie has made it her mission to shine a light on the fibres, people, and principles shaping Africa’s textile future.

“The reason I was interested in establishing these talks is that I don’t see anywhere else on the continent where we’re focusing on fibres produced here. It’s important to create awareness because we do produce incredible fibres that are sustainable, natural, and potentially the future of the fashion and textile industry.”

From wool and mohair in South Africa to banana fibres in Uganda, pineapple fibres in Kenya and cotton across West and Central Africa, Jackie believes these resources are key to building a more sustainable industry. With polyester and plastics dominating global fashion, she says, returning to natural fibres is not just a cultural choice, but an environmental necessity.

The summit, held under the theme Thread with Care, brought together changemakers from across the continent to exchange ideas. For Jackie, what stood out most was the cross-pollination of knowledge along the value chain.

“Someone working in processing might be blown away by what they hear from a farmer, or from a designer experimenting with their fibre,” she says. “These connections spark collaborations that push everyone to think about the future and how to do better.”

She recalls being struck by designer Wacy Zacarias from Mozambique, who uses healing plants to dye cloth, reminding audiences that clothing touches the skin, the body’s largest organ and should be treated with the same care as food. Another standout was Namibian academic Maria Caley, who unpacked the transformation of Herero and Nama traditional dresses through colonisation, showing how clothing has always reflected deeper social and political forces.

For Jackie, the message of “Thread With Care” is urgent.

“The world is falling apart. We’ve forgotten how to think with heart and soul about how we produce and consume. The way we make clothes must be done with care, and the way we wear them must be done with more care, because we’ve become so careless.”

Yet she remains hopeful.

“What gives me hope is the community. Every person who becomes more mindful about what they wear and how they make or buy clothes. That’s a step forward. The conversations are growing, and that’s positive.”

And with African Textile Talks gaining momentum, now five years strong, it seems South Africa’s textile story is only beginning to be rewoven.

Five female South African designers got the enormous opportunity to showcase their talent at New York Fashion Week!

Global (04 October 2024) — Five South African female designers got to enjoy the pinnacle of fashion excellence as they showcased at New York Fashion Week last month.

Through the Give Her a Crown Platform—an initiative by The Change Collective Africa that uses art to challenge barriers around gender equality—female empowerment was all the rage for local fashion lovers as South African designers got to give the runway an iconic run with their talents on full display.

Their works were as thoughtful in curation as they were in ideation, inspired by the theme ‘Shifting Perspectives’ and the words of spoken word artist Qui Qarre.

The Crown Collection for 2024 was co-curated with Michele Roda, the New York-based African Fashion Council and designer Chuks Collins. These curated pieces are a convergence of fashion, poetry and storytelling—elements that speak largely to the beating hearts of our continent. Additionally, they help raise awareness by spotlighting young female creatives to watch.

Celebrated fashion designer Gert-Johan Coetzee wowed the crowd at the Miss SA pageant with an array of gowns created via technology, 3D-printed magic and artistic flair!

Pretoria, South Africa (12 August 2024) — Celebrated South African designer Gert-Johan Coetzee once again made a dazzling impact on the Miss South Africa stage after the pageant night was graced with his innovative marriage of art and technology.

No stranger to the spotlight, Gert’s designs some of South Africa’s best known creations in fashion, with stars Oprah, Cardi B and Chloe Bailey having shown off Gert’s unmistakable local flair before.

On home ground, the name Gert Johan-Coetzee is synonymous with glamour and artistry—with the likes of the now former Miss South Africa Natasha Joubert being adorned with Gert’s imaginings before both when she represented South Africa in the famous children’s canvas dress on the international stage and when she won her crown in red and beaded beauty in 2023.

This year, the designer’s creativity reached new heights on the Miss SA stage with a new task—to create the gowns for the opening sequence of Miss South Africa. There, 11 stunning gowns transformed the stage into its own South African-proud runway where fashion coalesced with technology seamlessly.

Breaking into largely untapped territory; every piece of fabric seen was an example of fashionable tech with each having been meticulously created and printed in the Gert-Johan Coetzee studio.

But, the 3D-printed elements on the gowns were not void of human touch. In fact, these elements were quite the opposite; acting as storytelling elements unique to each contestant’s personality.

“I believe in embracing change, in letting each year’s contestants and their unique stories guide my creativity,” says Gert. “It’s about crafting gowns that not only celebrate their beauty but also resonate with the vibrance of our country. The thrill of creating something new and exciting each year is what drives me.”

“Remember, fashion is not just about following trends; it’s about setting them, about being fearless in your expression, and about inspiring others to see the world in a new light.”

Though each gown was a winner for South African fashion, only one wearer would take home the Miss SA crown. Aptly, this year’s Miss South Africa is also a boundary pusher—with the gorgeous Mia le Roux becoming the first hearing-impaired Miss SA to take on the reign!

If fashion tells a part of our individual story, then the people who are a part of that story should be recognised! This is the thinking behind the latest collection from Joburg-based Thebe Magugu, who recently made a special piece for none other than Oscar winner Lupita Nyong’o.

Global (18 October 2023) — South African fashion elite and visual storyteller Thebe Magugu has a new collection that does the opposite of what most designs do.

Instead of leading people to wear the imaginings of the designer, Magugu is on a journey of letting people lead his creations by encouraging them to share the stories and visuals of their loved ones to create pieces.

Like a photograph in a locket, his Heirloom Shirts are a visual love letter to the people who have helped build the wearer’s story, and recently, none other than Oscar winner Lupita Nyong’o trusted Magugu with the visual telling of her grandmother.

“I remember my grandmother, Dorca Owino Amolo, always bent over, working. She was never idle. She picked corn from her farm, de-kerneled it, dried it in the sun, sent it to be ground into flour in the local mill, and then cooked it into large mounds of delicious Ugali for the whole family to eat. She grew her own vegetables, she raised her own livestock, she fermented her own milk. She swept, she washed, she brushed, she scrubbed, she chopped, she stirred, she pounded, she rolled. And she did all of this quietly, swiftly, gracefully and joyfully.  Grandma taught me that work can be an expression of love, and I learned how to love the work of my body from her.”—Lupita Nyong’o.

Magugu’s eponymous brand (which still operates in Johannesburg) has dressed the likes of Rihanna, Kylie Jenner and Miley Cyrus among other big names in the pop culture scene.

While often these star-worn designs have told a South African story or an African one, the heart Magugu has sparked for people to connect with their own heritage is yet another thread of the proudly South Africanism Magugu’s work exudes.

Johannesburg-based designer Thebe Magugu has added another big award to his tally as honoured at a United Nations Event—this time for the designer’s dedication to positive impact in fashion.

New York, USA (02 October 2023) — South African designer and trailblazer Thebe Magugu is no stranger to accolades in the fashion world; continuously making South Africans proud thread by thread.

Recently, Magugu added another honour to his ever-growing tally which includes winning London Fashion Week and the LVMH Prize for Young Designers, Being named one of Vogue Business’ 100 Innovators as well as having a fan base consisting of Rihanna, Miley Cyrus and Thuso Mbedu.

The recent honour saw the beloved designer win an honour acknowledging his dedication to positive impact through and on fashion—something his work has encapsulated from the offset.

The dazzling moment took place at the 78th United Nations’ General Assembly where Fashion 4 Development hosted the First Ladies Luncheon and Magugu’s name was on everyone’s lips.

Here, Magugu won the Franca Sozzani Award where his craft, cultural celebration and charity initiatives (specifically his team-up with Dior for Charlize Theron’s African Outreach Project) were spotlit for their leading impact in the industry.

“Thebe’s dedication to capturing forgotten histories and cultures through fashion truly resonated with our community’s values. We are inspired by his commitment to inform and educate by his designs,” shared Fashion for Development.

This is yet another moment that secures Magugu’s place as a trailblazer—and more thrillingly, a South African trailblazer—in one of the world’s most influential industries. The moment comes with even more significance considering that Magugu only debuted his first collection in 2017.

Meanwhile, in other Magugu news, his latest collection is out and proud with SS24 and centres around the story of Sarah Baartman—another ode from the designer to South African stories.
