South African designer Leon Kluge and his team secured both Grand Gold and Best on Show at the Shenzhen International Flower Show with unique designs.

Shenzhen, China (27 March 2026) – What started as a behind-the-scenes build in a foreign country has now turned into a major win. South African designer Leon Kluge and his team have officially taken top honours at the Shenzhen International Flower Show, walking away with both the Grand Gold Award and Best on Show.

It’s a massive achievement at one of the biggest flower shows in Asia and a proud moment not just for the team on the ground, but for South Africa as a whole.

Speaking after the awards ceremony, Leon shared just how much the moment meant:

“South Africa won the Grand Gold Award. Not only the Grand Gold, we are also Best on Show. That means South Africa’s garden here at the Shenzhen Flower Show is number one.”

From the architecture right through to the plant selection, the winning garden stood out for its unique blend of influences, combining Asian design elements with strong African inspiration. It’s a fusion that clearly resonated with judges and visitors.

“Representing a mixture of Asian design and African influence in the design. Not only the architecture, but also the plants. And I’m very proud to take this on.”

Just days ago, the team was still deep in the build phase, working against time, language barriers, and the challenges of creating something world-class far from home. Now, that hard work has paid off in the best way possible.

“Thank you so much for all the encouraging messages from everybody back home every day, we managed to pull it off.”

After conquering one of the world’s biggest flower shows with two major awards secured, the team will soon be bringing their success back to South Africa.

Just days to go before the South African designer is hard at work building his garden at the Shenzhen International Flower Show, one of Asia’s biggest showcases.

Shenzhen, China (23 March 2026) – With just days to go before one of Asia’s biggest garden showcases opens its doors, South African designer Leon Kluge is right in the thick of it and building something special on the global stage.

Representing the country at the Shenzhen International Flower Show, Leon has been sharing behind-the-scenes glimpses of the intense build process. Positioned right at the entrance of the show, his garden is already taking shape, with structural elements like walkways, decking and water features being carefully put into place.

While a few trees are already planted, the real magic is still to come. For now, it’s all about construction. With water elements only arriving late at night and finishing touches happening around the clock. This shows that it’s no ordinary setup.

Burnt branch textures and flowing water features are slowly bringing the garden to life, with every detail adding to the final vision.

Leon is no stranger to international recognition, having previously made waves on the global stage.

Not forgetting the prestigious Landscape of the Year title, cementing his reputation as one of South Africa’s leading garden designers on the international stage. Now, with just four days to go, all eyes are on how his latest creation will come together and how South Africa will once again shine through his work.

From schoolyard dreams to the world stage, a South African athlete takes on the inaugural UIPM Obstacle World Championships.

Beijing, China (03 November 2025) – Modern pentathlon athletes have always been the ultimate all-rounders! Imagine mastering five completely different disciplines, all rolled into one sport.

For South African athlete Brandon Hulley, competing at the first-ever UIPM Obstacle World Championships was nothing short of a dream come true. For him, it was an unforgettable experience that will be cherished for a lifetime.

The UIPM Obstacle World Championships, organised by the Union Internationale de Pentathlon Moderne in partnership with World Obstacle, brings together some of the world’s top obstacle course racers. The inaugural 2025 edition, held in Beijing, China, featured elite athletes from across the globe competing in a variety of challenging events, including the 3km team race, where Italy took top honours.

Representing South Africa on the global stage, the talented competitor took part in both the 400m Elite Obstacle Race and the 3km Elite Obstacle Race, earning impressive podium finishes in each. A smart, calculated approach in the 400m paid off. This resulted in a third-place finish, while a more aggressive running strategy in the 3km saw them push through to claim second place overall.

Reflecting on the experience, he described the build-up as both nerve-wracking and exhilarating.

“I was extremely nervous leading up to the race because of the higher stakes it was a world championship, and I was the only South African competing.”

But with the encouragement of friends, family, and the wider sporting community, those nerves turned into fuel for success.

Behind the medals was a deep sense of gratitude. This was to everyone who sent messages of support, to South African Modern Pentathlon for making the opportunity possible, and to UIPM for hosting such a world-class event.

“What an incredible honour it was to represent South Africa. This is a memory and opportunity I’ll remember forever.”

This achievement shines a light on a sporting code that many South Africans are still getting to know. As the sport continues to grow locally, stories like this remind us of the talent and potential waiting to be celebrated.

Powerlifter Megan Faul comes home to an unforgettable workplace surprise after representing South Africa on the world stage in China.

South Africa (22 August 2025) – When Megan Faul walked into work after returning from the World Games in China, she probably expected a normal day back at the office. What she got instead was a celebration fit for a champion. With vuvuzelas, South African flags, and emotional cheers.

The surprise moment on social media captured the pure joy and national pride that followed Megan’s outstanding performance on the world stage as a powerlifter representing South Africa.

At the World Games, Megan competed in powerlifting, delivering a phenomenal total across three lifts:

Squat: 205 kg

Bench Press: 122.5 kg

Deadlift:217.5 kg

That is a staggering 545 kg lifted.

What made her return so special was not just her incredible athletic achievement, but the heartfelt effort from her colleagues. As she stepped out the door, the sound of vuvuzelas filled the air, and the halls were lined with co-workers waving South African flags and stepping away from their desks to take part in the surprise.

This spontaneous parade was a show of pride and admiration not just for Megan’s strength on the platform, but also for the example she sets off it.

The celebration served as a reminder of how powerful community and support can be. Megan’s co-workers cheered her on from afar and made sure she knew in true South African style that her efforts had not gone unnoticed.

It was more than just a “welcome back.” It was a collective expression of pride, gratitude, and love for one of their own.

Megan Faul may have lifted over half a ton in China, but back home, it was her story and her community spirit that truly lifted hearts. Her return to work became a celebration of unity and the everyday people who show up to support greatness when it walks through the door.

Marking their ninth appearance at The World Games, Team South Africa starts strong with two silver medals and exciting competition ahead.

Chengdu, China (11 August 2025) – What would a world competition be without South Africa in the mix? Far less exciting!

The 12th edition of The World Games is underway in Chengdu, China, from 7 to 17 August 2025, and Team South Africa is proudly competing among the world’s best. For the first time, the IWGA’s ‘Growth Beyond Excellence’ strategy is in play, and with over 100 nations competing in this multi-sport spectacle, the energy is off the charts.

This is the ninth World Games attended by Team SA, with their first appearance in 1993 in The Hague, Netherlands. South Africa made a strong start, entering the Opening Ceremony with their flag held high, ready to represent the nation with pride and determination.

One of the standout performances so far has been by canoeist Hamish Lovemore, who secured South Africa’s first medal of the competition with an impressive silver in the Short Course event. Lovemore followed up his success the very next day by winning another silver medal in the Long Course, adding to Team SA’s growing medal tally.

With two medals in the bag, the team’s schedule continues to be busy. South African athletes will compete in several events, including squash and billiards. In billiards, Jason Theron will compete against Alejandro Carvajal in the Mixed Heyball Quarterfinals. Marina Jacobs also playing at the same time in the Mixed Heyball 9–16 placing match against Adriana Villar.

Two medals secured and more to go. The team looks to finish strong in the next few days, demonstrating determination and skill on the world stage. The World Games 2025 continues to be an important platform for South African athletes to showcase their talent and compete among the best globally.

Proudly sporting green and gold, Sekgodiso ran a world-leading indoor national record ahead of Ethiopia’s Nigist Getachew and Portugal’s Patricia Silva, securing her country’s first women’s world indoor gold medal, World Athletics confirms.

The 23-year-old’s dedication to rigorous training paid off with a strong performance in the four-lap race. She finished at 1:58.40 (That’s also the fastest time in the world this year!). This impressive achievement admittedly surprised her, as Sekgodiso was competing alongside some of the fastest runners in the world.
