Some business ideas start in boardrooms… Joseph’s began with a long walk, a caring family and a dream on three wheels.

Johannesburg, South Africa (25 October 2025) – Every now and then, you meet someone whose spirit makes you stop, smile and genuinely feel hopeful about humanity. Joseph Tarisai is one of those people.

If you’ve driven past the local driving range in Magaliessig, you may already know him, the guy with the biggest grin, a chef’s jacket, a mobile grill on a three-wheeled bike and a friendly thumbs-up for anyone who passes by. That’s Joseph… the man behind BoerieBike and one of Joburg’s most heart-warming success stories.

This all started when Joseph was working at an Italian restaurant near Waterfall, walking from Diepsloot to work every single day. Yes, walking. Kilometres and kilometres, just to earn an honest living.

Claire Scott-Rodger, an avid Good Things Guy reader, shared this unbelievable story with us.

“Joseph was walking from Diepsloot to Waterfall every day! I told my husband about it and he immediately said, no, this is absolutely crazy. We need to come up with a business idea and help him.”

So they did far more than just help.

Claire’s husband, Warwick Scott-Rodger, designed a bike. But not just any bike… a fully branded, custom-built boerie stand on wheels. A dream starter. A future creator. A business on the move. And just like that, Joseph became a business owner.

Joseph’s life hasn’t been easy. Despite a family history filled with world travel, success, and opportunity, those opportunities were not given to him. While some of his step-siblings went to top schools and now hold major positions abroad, Joseph was steered into hospitality because of limited access to education.

That never stopped him.

He worked in kitchens. He learnt. He perfected his craft. And today, he serves some of the most loved boerie rolls in Joburg.

“Joseph has worked in restaurants his whole life and makes the most incredible food, he even makes all the pizzas at our house when we have friends over and everyone adores him. He has done lots of parties and events at people’s houses over the last year with his BoerieBike, and all we’ve ever heard are people singing his praises.”

His kindness has only come back to him multiplied. Customers drop off Easter eggs. Someone gifted him running shoes. Others bring him books, and yes, he’s reading Rich Dad, Poor Dad. Because Joseph isn’t just building a business… he’s building a life he knows he deserves. He waves at his regulars. He remembers who likes onions and who doesn’t. He chats, he laughs, he hustles, he dreams. He shows up, every day. And that’s why his business has grown in just one year from an idea on a page to a thriving roadside favourite.

“Joseph is the kindest, most humble, smiley guy you will ever meet.”

His story reminds us that some people just need one person to believe in them. And then they soar. And right now, Joseph is soaring with a smile, a chef’s jacket and a BoerieBike.

If you’re ever in the area, pop in, say hello, and treat yourself to a boerie roll made by someone who pours love into everything he does. You’ll find Joseph just outside the driving range (Local Kitchen side) in Magaliessig.

For over two decades, a small hospice in Edenvale has been showing South Africans what it means to care with heart, offering peace and comfort to those facing their final chapter.

Johannesburg, South Africa (20 August 2025) – There’s something extraordinary about ordinary people doing quiet, powerful things behind the scenes… no spotlight, no fuss, just unwavering kindness. This week on Good Things with Brent Lindeque, we get to sit down with one such team whose work is not only inspiring but deeply moving: the hearts behind the Edenvale Care Centre Hospice.

Since 2002, this team has been turning an ordinary house in Edenvale into something extraordinary. What was once a double garage is now a warm, peaceful ward. The living room has become a space for families to gather and just be present with loved ones.

Every room in the house serves a purpose and every purpose is grounded in dignity and care.

Hospice care is different. It doesn’t fight death; it embraces life, right up to the very end. And at Edenvale Care Centre Hospice, they don’t just treat illness, they support people. Patients. Families. Friends. Their mission is all about palliative care, counselling and community involvement… an outreach of love that goes far beyond medicine.

What makes this episode even more meaningful is that it’s part of our Budget Insurance x Good Things Guy partnership, where we get to spotlight South Africans doing good things. And thanks to this partnership, we’re telling their stories but give them a little love too.

Budget Insurance believes in backing the helpers. Known for offering simple, affordable cover that protects what matters, they’ve teamed up with us because they understand something really important: with Budget, good things come to good South Africans.

So watch the episode, meet the team and let us know who you’d nominate next. Drop a comment or send us an email at info@goodthingsguy.com… because there are so many people doing good things in our communities, and together, we get to shine a light on them.

At 72 and 75, Lisa and Colin could be enjoying quiet days at home. Instead, they’re building a crèche out of plastic bottles and changing the world for an entire community.

Johannesburg, South Africa (11 August 2025) – When most people retire, the plan usually involves slowing down. Maybe more tea, more grandkids or more gardening. But for Lisa and Colin Ekman, 72 and 75, “retirement” has been anything but quiet. Instead, these two have rolled up their sleeves, grabbed some plastic bottles and decided to make a difference in one of South Africa’s most underserved communities.

The Ekmans have lived a life of service. Colin spent 16 years as a minister at Village Church Lonehill before starting a building company. Lisa was an art teacher at Riversands, near Diepsloot, and also served as Managing Director for a South African Sunday school curriculum called iVangeli. Over the years, they’d crossed paths with local community leader Bishop Dlothi, and when their working days came to an end, they knew they weren’t done making an impact.

“We wanted to make our final years relevant for our local community,” Lisa told Good Things Guy. “We’ve worked all around Africa, but now we wanted to focus nearer to home at Diepsloot, which is only 10km away from Lonehill.”

Partnering with Earthly Touch, a local NPO that had previously built classrooms from 2-litre plastic bottles, they began a project to construct a crèche at The Vineyard Church. But this isn’t your average build. The walls are literally made of Eco Bricks… plastic bottles stuffed with non-recyclable waste like chip packets and bread bags. The process is as clever as it is sustainable. Schools across Johannesburg, the local Diepsloot community and volunteers collect bottles and fill them with plastic that would otherwise end up in landfills. For stability, the lower bottles near the foundation are filled with sand. Brick pillars provide support, but the bulk of the wall is built from these recycled bottles. Not only does this keep waste out of the environment but it also saves significantly on construction costs.

The current crèche project needs R80,000 to complete, but Lisa and Colin are already thinking ahead. The next crèche and adult education centre have already been chosen to start later this year. Teachers from these centres attend Early Childhood Development classes and earn formal qualifications, ensuring that the children in their care get the best start possible.

But the Ekmans’ vision extends beyond education.

Concerned by the University of the Witwatersrand’s findings that stunted growth in poverty-stricken areas affects children’s mental capacity, they launched vegetable gardens at Diepsloot churches to provide fresh produce for crèches. What started with six gardens has now grown into 40 allotment gardens, each 6m x 500mm, allocated to elderly members and friends from local churches, many of them non-nationals who receive no government grants.

These gardens are carefully managed: each has a “captain” overseeing the watering and weeding and participants receive a small stipend. Culterra supplies compost to enrich the poor local soil, and seedlings are provided to ensure continuous harvests.

It’s not just about vegetables or bricks, it’s about dignity, self-sufficiency and building a community that thrives together.

Lisa and Colin’s work has already inspired many to get involved.

“Any help financially or collecting and stuffing the bottles would be most appreciated,” they say.

Their registered NPO, Cherith, can provide 18A certificates so donations are tax-deductible, but more than that, this is a chance for everyday South Africans to be part of something truly special.

At an age when most people are stepping back, Lisa and Colin are stepping up. And their story is a powerful reminder that purpose doesn’t come with an expiry date… and neither does the ability to change the world.

When a humble petrol attendant gave away a few litres of fuel and slipped R100 into a stranger’s hand, he never imagined that gesture would inspire thousands to do the same… and remind South Africa what it means to really care.

Johannesburg, South Africa (31 July 2025) – When Justin Roderick’s story first landed on Good Things Guy, it moved the country in a way few stories ever do.

It wasn’t just about a car that ran out of petrol, or a family struggling to stay afloat. It was about what happened next… when a stranger named Warren Bhebhe, a petrol attendant in Bryanston, stepped forward and quietly, gently, changed everything. He paid for a 5-litre bottle of petrol out of his own pocket. Then, as Justin rushed back to the car with his two tearful daughters, Warren slipped a folded R100 into his hand. No big gesture. No “look at me” moment. Just kindness… quiet, sincere and powerful.

“He didn’t just bless me with petrol,” Justin wrote. “He gave me hope.”

And from that single act of compassion… something truly extraordinary began to grow. In the days since that moment was shared with the world, Justin has been overwhelmed, not by sympathy, but by connection.

“The pain and struggle of trying to keep my family okay has been immense,” he shared in an emotional update. “There were days I felt like my body was shutting down from the internal weight of it all. Hearing my girls cry from helplessness broke me in ways no words can explain.”

But what met that pain was nothing short of a miracle. Thousands of comments, shares, prayers and messages from people across South Africa and the world. People who had also felt helpless. People who knew what it meant to be at the end of your rope. People who were moved by Warren’s gesture and inspired to go out and do the same.

“My family no longer feels alone. I feel like I have a family of thousands. We feel loved, seen, and cared for. You’ve moved me in ways I cannot fully express.”

The story has reached radio stations, newspapers and online platforms, but more importantly, it’s reached hearts. It’s changed the way people see each other at petrol stations, in traffic and at school drop-offs. It’s reminded us that we are not alone, that we are each other’s keepers.

“We’re not just sharing a story anymore,” Justin wrote. “We’re exporting hope.”

And that hope “in action” is already happening.

People have been inspired to help one another. R20. R50. A loaf of bread. A conversation. A hug. A message. All in the name of The Warren Challenge, a call to do one kind thing for someone else and share it to keep the ripple going.

“If each of us helps just one person this week,” Justin wrote, “Warren’s R100 will multiply into millions of acts of kindness.”

There are whispers of a bigger dream forming, “The Warren Effect“, something that might one day become a platform to celebrate and multiply acts of kindness. But the most important message isn’t what’s being built, it’s that none of us are alone; we are all in this together.

“To those who’ve shared their own struggles in the comments, you are not alone. Your vulnerability gives others permission to be human.”

“To my daughters, you’ve now seen that angels exist, and sometimes they wear petrol attendant uniforms.”

“And to Warren, the world may now know your name. But more importantly, they know your heart.”

So whether you help by giving, by sharing, by praying, or simply by choosing love instead of anger today, you are part of the ripple. Because this is no longer just a story… it’s South Africa, remembering itself. One act of kindness at a time.

Along the pristine coastline of Plettenberg Bay, a massive pod of dolphins made a surprise appearance, and thankfully, Christy Strever was there to capture it all.

Plettenberg Bay, South Africa (07 July 2025) – There are moments that remind us just how beautiful our world can be… and this one is right up there. Christy Strever, a long-time friend of Good Things Guy and absolute magician behind the camera, has been treating her followers to some magic from the Plettenberg Bay coastline… and it’s all thanks to a pod of playful dolphins that seem to love the camera as much as she does.

For those who’ve been following Good Things Guy for a while, Christy’s name may sound familiar. And for good reason. She’s been part of some of our favourite stories over the years: from her amazing food selfies (that got the attention of Gordon Ramsey) and, of course, that unforgettable moment she shaved off all her hair for a cancer awareness campaign. Whatever the moment, Christy brings heart, humour and incredible photography.

Now based in Plettenberg Bay, Christy has been using her lens to show us a softer, wilder side of life. Her latest posts, videos and stills of a massive pod of dolphins gliding, playing and leaping through the waves are something out of a dream.

“The first dolphins for me this season and I was lucky!” she shared. “This is some of the best footage I’ve got of just dolphins. Dolphins are tricky to film because they are soooo quick! However these ones were super chilled and going at the perfect speed for filming (even though I was still in sports mode).”

I’m still an amateur when it comes to videography but man I love it!!”

What she’s captured feels far more than amateur… it’s art. And the response online proves just how much people needed that moment of peace and awe.

One follower commented, “Unbelievable. What a great sighting.” Another added, “That is awesome. Spent many many years surfing… all along our fantastic coastline yet never witnessed such a beautiful moment as the one you captured. Thank you for sharing. Great photography.”

It’s clear the moment touched hearts.

“Isn’t nature breathtakingly beautiful?” another comment read.

And honestly, yes. Yes, it is.

Dressed in her robe, filled with pride and powered by prayer and perseverance… Khanyi Kubheka is officially an Advocate of the High Court of South Africa.

South Africa (28 June 2025) – “Makwande. Kukhanye. Kubekuhle.” Those were the words that 24-year-old Khanyi Kubheka, better known online as Khanyi Kuubz, used to end her powerful announcement… and honestly, they couldn’t be more perfect.

Because on the 30th of May 2025, Khanyi did something massive. Something inspiring. Something that deserves all the praise and all the applause. She was officially admitted as an Advocate of the High Court of South Africa… at just 24 years old!

Yip. Twenty-four.

And already in court, robed up and ready to bring justice to the world. We’re not crying, you are.

Khanyi shared the news in a post that has since inspired thousands across Mzansi.

“This milestone is a dream fulfilled,” she wrote. “I thank God, my ancestors, my parents, grandparents, family and friends for their love, support and prayers.” She called it a dream rooted in love for the law, “nurtured by prayer and perseverance.”

Honestly? Goosebumps.

Khanyi’s story starts in Benoni, Gauteng (according to her LinkedIn), a town known for producing stars (shoutout to Charlize!). She attended Wordsworth High School, an ordinary public school where she was anything but ordinary. After matriculating, Khanyi set her sights on law. She enrolled at the University of Pretoria’s Faculty of Law in and hit the ground running. Four years later, degree in hand, she walked proudly across the graduation stage with her LLB.

And she didn’t let that momentum fade. Nope, straight into pupillage she went (that’s the tough, practical part of training to become an advocate) and then BOOM, admitted into the High Court before even turning 25.

What makes this moment even more special is that Khanyi isn’t just a legal mind, she’s a deeply grounded, proudly rooted woman who honours the people who made her journey possible. In her post, she thanks her elders, her family and her community. She knows it takes a village. She doesn’t just carry her own dreams, she carries all of ours too.

Khanyi also represents something big: the new face of the South African legal profession. Young. Female. Black. Proud. Confident. Breaking barriers and opening doors for others to walk through. And she’s not stopping here. There’s mentorship in her future, advocacy work, leadership, maybe even a judge’s robe one day. (We’re calling it now: Justice Kuubz has a nice ring to it, right?)

In a country where young people often have to fight extra hard to be seen, Khanyi is proof that talent, tenacity and heart can still move mountains. Her story is a reminder that the legal field, once dominated by older men in dark suits, is changing. And Khanyi is helping lead that change with style, grace and serious legal swagger. Her story also fits into a growing chorus of brilliant young minds doing amazing things in South Africa. People like Freddy Sonakile, who became a lawyer and provincial politician at 24, and Nomlayo Mabhena, who qualified as one of the youngest Black female attorneys at 23. And now, Khanyi Kuubz joins the movement.

This isn’t just a personal win for Khanyi, it’s a moment of pride for all of us. It’s a reminder that good things are happening all around us, every single day.

And that the youth of this country are not just the future. They’re the now.

Congrats Khanyi. The advocate. The inspiration. The force of nature. May your career be as bright as your spirit. May the courtrooms you enter always echo with justice. And may you never forget just how many people are cheering you on.

Makwande. Kukhanye. Kubekuhle.

When a world-famous chef like Jamie Oliver compliments your cooking, you know you’re doing something right… and a small Cape Town restaurant has just earned that honour.

Western Cape, South Africa (25 June 2025) – Every now and then, something delightful happens that gives us that warm, fuzzy feeling… and this one’s cooked to perfection.

Jamie Oliver, yes that Jamie Oliver, just gave a nod of approval to one of Cape Town’s most exciting culinary gems: Belly of the Beast.

The globally renowned chef is currently in the Mother City (we’re not sure what he’s up to exactly, but we hope he’s soaking up every bite of it), and one of his stops included the much-loved, proudly local 30-seater restaurant tucked away in the heart of town.

If you know Belly of the Beast, you know that it’s not your average dining experience. There’s no menu to choose from. Just trust. Trust the chefs, the ingredients and the carefully curated journey they’ve designed for each sitting. Both lunch and dinner. The result is a food adventure you won’t forget.

So when Jamie popped in, the team were understandably a little starstruck.

They took to Instagram to share the moment:

“Growing up, we loved watching Jamie Oliver racing around town on his red scooter, cooking for his friends and making food feel fun and approachable.

He made such a big impact on how we saw cooking back then. So it was very cool, and a bit surreal, to have him eating at Belly of the Beast today.

A true gentleman and an all-round lekker guy. Thanks for joining us, for the kind words, and for sharing your passion, we’re all big fans!”

The joy didn’t stop there. Jamie (or his team, either way, it’s from his account) responded to the post with a short but sweet message:

“Wonderful meal and team thank you so much”

That’s right. One of the world’s most recognisable chefs has just given a heartfelt thumbs-up to a local spot that puts heart, soul and creativity into every single plate.

But this isn’t the first time Jamie has shown love for Cape Town’s food scene either. Last year, we reported on his visit to The Test Kitchen Fledglings, a local upliftment programme that fuses fine dining with purpose, empowering individuals through culinary training. He lit up the kitchen with his presence and reminded everyone why food with heart always wins.

For Belly of the Beast, which champions seasonal, locally sourced ingredients and a nose-to-tail cooking philosophy, this kind of appreciation is massive. And for the rest of us, it’s just another reminder of the magic that lives right here in Cape Town… in tiny dining rooms in Harrington Street with big flavours and even bigger dreams, to local organisations making a difference in Woodstock and even to some of our favourites in Loop Street. There really is something “wonderful” about the Cape Town foodie scene.

His ability to make us laugh while reminding us who we are is what makes Themba Robin a voice for the nation… literally and figuratively.

South Africa (03 June 2025) – This week on Good Things with Brent Lindeque, we’re bringing you something truly special… the kind of story that’ll make you smile from ear to ear, laugh out loud and feel just a little bit prouder to be South African. Because this week, we’re sitting down with Themba Robin… the hilarious, kind, proudly South African voice behind some of the funniest content on your screen.

Whether you’ve seen him playfully narrating life like it’s a wildlife documentary or heard his iconic voiceovers on your favourite radio and TV ads, chances are, Themba has already brightened your day without you even knowing it.

Known by many as “South Africa’s David Attenborough” (and yes, he wears that nickname like a badge of honour), Themba’s knack for delivering laugh-out-loud moments with clever, thoughtful humour is what makes him a standout talent in the local creative scene. But it’s not just about the giggles. His comedy has heart. It makes you think. It connects us to each other, and to this chaotic, beautiful country we call home.

Raised in the friendly city of Gqeberha (formerly PE) and now a proud Jo’burger, Themba is more than just a viral content creator or voiceover artist for the country’s biggest brands. He’s a dad, and a businessman, and a proud South African, and an all round lekker guy.

So why is this a good thing? Because people like Themba remind us that there’s still so much to laugh about. So much to celebrate. So much light in the everyday. Whether it’s poking fun at our load-shedding survival techniques or narrating potholes like they’re part of the Serengeti, his talent brings people together in joy and shared experience. And that kind of impact matters.

Themba’s story, and his success, is proof that when you mix authenticity, talent, and a good heart… you can uplift a nation.

And honestly, we’re all better for it.

So grab your headphones, hit play, and come laugh with us. Because this week’s episode of Good Things with Brent Lindeque is all about good vibes, good people… and one incredibly good guy.
