The moment a mother’s heartbreak was met with community compassion. Two kind officers turned a little family’s morning of despair into heartfelt joy when they personally purchased two boys the shoes they needed to walk proudly into their Grade 2 classroom.
Phoenix, South Africa (18 January 2026) – This week, as many young people eagerly returned to school, a mom and her two boys were sadly turned away from theirs. Not because they’d done anything particularly wrong, but because of their lack.
The little family, both visibly upset and in tears, was noticed by SAPS officers Sergeant Gonaseelan and Constable Maharaj while conducting routine patrol duties in the Phoenix area.
Concerned, the officers approached the woman to find out what had happened, as shared by SAPS member Vick Maharaj.
The heartbroken mother explained that the school had been unable to admit her children because they did not have school shoes, forcing her to take them home despite it being their first day of the academic year.
Moved by the situation, Sergeant Gonaseelan and Constable Maharaj immediately took action. Without hesitation, the officers purchased two pairs of brand-new school shoes for the children from their local SPAR, which is working in partnership with Bata to ensure families can access affordable school shoes.
The officers then personally accompanied the family back to the school, where the children, both enrolled in Grade 2, were able to return to class fully prepared and ready to begin their first day of school!
“This act of kindness highlights the compassionate side of policing and serves as a reminder that SAPS officers are not only guardians of the law, but also pillars of support within the community they serve,” Maharaj eloquently said.
Good Things Guy salutes and appreciates these fine officers, who restored a mother’s hope in a moment of despair and ensured her two boys didn’t miss out on their first day back at school.
