A security officer’s daughter is graduating, thanks to a community that stepped in when money became the greatest obstacle.
Cape Town, South Africa (19 January 2026) – Nicolette Shingange was on course to complete her Bachelor’s degree in Philosophy and Psychology at the University of Cape Town.
She was a star student. She was deeply involved in student life and service. Beyond academic dedication, she served as a sub-warden and receptionist, played a role in residence leadership and House Committee work, and spent time tutoring and mentoring.
Just as she reached the finish line, however, an outstanding fee balance of R76,000 threatened to stop her from donning the cap and gown.
Like many students across South Africa, Nicolette depended on NSFAS funding. While it covered most costs, accommodation caps led to residence fees slowly adding up. Month by month, the debt grew.
Nicolette shared her story online because she had no other way forward. She’d met every academic requirement, the only thing left was the money. And so, she created a fundraising campaign.
That campaign landed on our feed when Holy Rosary School shared the plea.
“Every morning, many of us are greeted at the Horwood Road gate by one of our beloved security team members, Levis, always smiling, always waving, always making our girls and staff feel seen and welcome before the day even begins. Today, we would like to gently share that her daughter is in her final stretch towards graduation, but she needs assistance with her outstanding tuition fees in order to complete her studies. This is a deeply important moment in her life and her families, and any support would go a long way in helping her reach the finish line,” the school wrote.
Support streamed in for Nicolette from thereon out.
The campaign went live right before New Year and by January 19th, 119% percent of Nicolette’s R76,000 fundraising goal had been raised! An anonymous donor left an incredible R63,885 while the balance poured in from 38 others.
“Thank you Levis for years of smiles and happiness- good Luck Nicolette – we are rooting for you!” shared one supporter.
“Congratulations on your incredible achievement and cannot wait to see how you change the world!” wrote another.
The anonymous donor simply left a heart as a note. Their generosity spoke louder than any words could.
Bowled over by the incredible show of support, and with a fully-funded degree in the bag, Nicolette expressed overwhelming gratitude not only for her supporters but for her mom. Levis showed up consistently for others. That kindness came back when it mattered most.

“We have officially reached our goal! I’m beyond speechless and overly emotional at all your kindness. I’m filled with so much gratitude, thank you all for donating. I can graduate and beyond that proceed with my studies (postgraduate acceptance confirmed). Thank you thank you! The additional funds are still going into graduation preps as well – particularly getting the family down to Cape Town to witness the milestone.
Without my mother, this wouldn’t have been possible. Beyond grateful for her and again, all of you for helping. I would love to pay it forward as I grow and develop into this journey of mine. Highly highly appreciated, and a payout to UCT has been initiated, soon will be a picture with Zero debt and beautiful smiles at Sarah Baartman hall. Beyond grateful! You’ve made it all possible. Thank you thank you!” shares Nicolette.

What a good story!!! Very encouraging to hear of someone who was helped by the public towards her studies. I understand because I was in the same situation but never fortune.
Keep up the great work team! May the good Lord bless you all. 🙌🙌
