South Africans across the country showed up with purpose this Mandela Day, and 947 Drive with Thando turned that purpose into over 5,000 blankets for those in need.

Johannesburg, South Africa (21 June 2025) – Mandela Day always brings out the best in South Africans, a day when kindness gets louder, hearts open wider and people roll up their sleeves to serve. This year was no different. In fact, it felt even bigger. From schools to corporates, from individuals to entire communities, thousands of South Africans stepped up, proving once again how powerful collective compassion can be.

While we’ve featured many incredible stories from this year’s Mandela Day, there’s one that feels a little closer to home. One that makes us beam with pride.

947 Drive with Thando, the weekday radio show that mixes energy, humour and all the good vibes, turned their microphones into megaphones for good. For the second year in a row, they hosted their “Fill The Studio” winter donation drive… and this year, the studio quite literally overflowed.

In the lead-up to Mandela Day, the team broadcast live from their Montecasino studios, encouraging listeners to help bring warmth to those who need it most. Their call to action was to fill the space with blankets, jackets, anything warm… and fill it they did! Thanks to their listeners, partners, and the incredible community spirit that defines Joburg (and beyond), they collected over 5,000 blankets. And yes, they filled the studio but they also filled the hearts of thousands of people facing the bitter winter chill.

All donations were handed over to The Angel Network, a deeply respected non-profit organisation that ensures every blanket, every jacket and every bit of kindness goes to a home where it’s truly needed.

“This is our second year running ‘Fill The Studio’ for Mandela Day, and once again, we were blown away by the love and generosity of our listeners,” said Thando Thabethe, host of 947 Drive with Thando. “It’s a true reflection of Madiba’s spirit – giving with purpose and heart.”

We love Thando Thabethe and the entire 947 Drive team… and it’s not just because you can catch me sharing some feel-good news every Monday after 4:30pm on the show (although I do love having a feature).

It’s because the entire team are filled with so much love and kindness.

This Mandela Day, South Africa once again reminded the world of its warmth. Not just through blankets, but through unity, love and a shared belief that we are all responsible for each other.

Thank you South Africa.
