Sorry, what? A seal ate your hair on Table Mountain?

Cape Town, South Africa (01 April 2026) – Imagine that. Hating your experience of Table Mountain so much, you leave a negative Google review…

The same Table Mountain that was voted one of the New 7 Wonders of Nature and stands as an ancient, 240-million-year-old icon of our landscapes. The same mountain that forms part of a floral kingdom that boasts more plant species than the entire United Kingdom…

That one?

Turns out, in the words of Shania Twain, that don’t impress me much.

Well, not us. But the Google reviewers. The people taking time out of their busy days to roast Table Mountain.

Trail runner hero Danielle Lubbe recently shared a video on social media that has gained more than 160,000 views. In it, she shares some of the – quite frankly – ridiculous complaints Negative Nancies have had about the Mother City’s most beloved mountain.

Before we go any further, we need to make one thing clear. If the reviews were regarding real concerns threatening safety or about poorly maintained trails, we’d understand. This is an entirely different story…

Courtesy of Lubbe, some of the colourful reviews left by Table Mountain visitors over the years:

“Disappointing when you get to the top. Scruff and dirty, 3 stars” Since when are mountains generally preferred smooth and clean?

“Too high and they do not sell food + a seal ate my hair, 3 stars” A seal ate your hair, on top of a high mountain, where there was no food?

“It’s a mountain, 1 star” Didn’t see that one coming.

Thousands of people across the globe save up for years just to catch a glimpse of that famous ‘tablecloth’ cloud draping over the summit, but some visitors clearly have different hopes.

Danielle’s right. You can be a world-class masterpiece, and someone will still find a reason to swipe left. One of the most beautiful landmarks on Earth can’t get a five-star review from everyone; we should probably stop worrying so much about the critics in our own lives!

A brilliant little lesson.

And hey, if you feel like doing something good, go and leave a positive review about Table Mountain on Google!

He was one of the shelter’s longest-staying residents. On Valentine’s Day this year, his forever found him. Now he’s living his very best life. This is the joy that adopting an ‘oldie’ brings!

Bronkhorstspruit, South Africa (31 March 2026) – The Wetnose Animal Rescue Centre recently celebrated the best news! One of the longest-staying residents – Gibson, an Afghan Hound – has been adopted and is loving life in his new home.

For a doggie that spent 12 long years in a shelter, it’s a wonderful new chapter after a lonely one of non-belonging.

“Gibson has always been the kind of dog who makes friends wherever he goes. Gentle, loving, and full of charm, he’s spent his days winning hearts without even trying.” Wetnose affectionately shared about him.

Gibson’s forever family said ‘yes!’ to him on Valentine’s Day this year, and have since shared happy updates about their beloved old boy, who is settling in well with his siblings, in his new home.

“This is what adoption really looks like – the moment a dog leaves the kennels behind and steps into a home full of love. It has given this old man a new spring in his step.” Wetnose shared.

Just look at how happy he is!

This is what joy adopting an older dog can bring. They might have many years behind them, but they are still the most loyal of companions – often calmer, deeply affectionate, and just looking for a soft place to land and someone to love.

Stories like this one offer a glimpse into what’s possible when someone chooses to say yes. Yes to a dog who’s been overlooked. Yes to a story that isn’t brand new, and yes to love that extends beyond years.

While puppies and kittens are often snapped up quickly, older dogs and cats like Gibson can wait years for their chance. But as this story shows, there is always hope for a happy ending.

Adoption, in any form, changes lives. It eases the burden on shelters, opens space for other animals in need, and gives a deserving pet the chance to be part of a family. Whether young or old, every animal has something special to offer.

“Gibson is doing really well in his new home. He loves to sleep with his new best friends. He also loves to run and play with them” Wetnose shares.

This video will fix whatever is wrong with your day. You’re welcome!

Nelspruit, South Africa (31 March 2026) – The newest (and perhaps muddiest) member of the Care for Wild Rhino Sanctuary family has us smiling from ear to ear.

At just over three weeks old, a tiny white rhino calf is already making a big splash. In an adorable video shared by the sanctuary this week, the little bull is captured discovering the absolute joy of a good old-fashioned mud wallow.

“Rose’s baby, now just over 3 weeks old, is already enjoying the delights of a mud wallow. His mom took him to the shallow end, but he made sure to fully immerse himself, rolling onto his side, coating his face, and learning not to inhale the mud and water.” the sanctuary shares.

While the calf practiced his ‘mud-bath’ skills, his mama, Rose, took the opportunity for a well-deserved break. Being a rhino mom is tough work.

“Meanwhile, Rose rested quietly next to him, enjoying a few moments of peace and quiet while her little boy kept himself entertained for quite a while, as rangers watched in awe close by… How amazing to see such confidence in such a young calf just because Mom is nearby!”

This playful moment is even more special when you know Rose’s history from heartbreak to hope.

Photo Credit: Care for Wild Rhino Sanctuary

“Rose was rescued in 2017 after poachers shot and fatally injured her mother. Left orphaned and alone, she was fortunately found in time by rescuers and brought to Care for Wild. Here, she began her long journey of rehabilitation and grew up alongside fellow orphans…”

Rose is no longer an orphan in need of a mom, but now a mama herself, raising the next generation in a protected space! It’s a beautiful reminder that even after tragedy, there is space for hope, healing, and lots of mud!

‘Grand-Ma, wanneer Grand-Pa nie meer werk nie!’

South Africa (30 March 2026) – Bouwer Bosch has South Africans in stitches again.

His latest viral video has racked up more than 760,000 views, and the premise had us cackling.

A Scottish actor does a voice-over for an Afrikaans advert about Grand-Ma, the remedy you turn to when South Africa’s most famous headache powder stops doing the job.

‘Wanneer Grand-Pa nie meer werk nie, kry vir jou ‘n Grand-Ma…’

But with a Scots accent.

A post shared by Bouwer Bosch (@bouwerbosch)

One commenter coined the term ‘Scotikaans’. Another admitted it took them a minute to start thinking in the right language. Someone else said they needed a Grand-Pa just from watching.

‘Pop vier pilletjies in die oggend en pop vier pilletjies in die aand vir a kopseer…jy voel sommer gou-gou beter!’

Bouwer is a South African musician, actor and filmmaker who first rose to local fame as a member of Afrikaans rock band Straatligkinders in the early 2000s. He went on to become a familiar face on TV while building a reputation behind the camera as a director and producer. Today he’s widely recognised as a versatile creative entrepreneur, working across music, film and advertising.

Julie is a primary school robotics and coding teacher who recently uploaded a TikTok asking netizens for help in teaching her grade 4s an important lesson…

South Africa (27 March 2026) – Julie is a local teacher currently working through a unit about online safety and security with her youngest learners. So she did what any brilliant teacher would do, and she made a TikTok!

Rather than explaining how quickly things spread online (which is a bit abstract when you’re nine years old), Julie uploaded a video to TikTok and asked strangers from around the world to help her prove the point.

“I just want to show my Grade 4s how quickly something can spread on social media. If you can, would you mind commenting where you are in the world, and if you know me, or you don’t know me.”

@raising.the.vockys Please help me show my Grade 4 learners how quickly something can spread on Social Media #fyp #onlineawareness #safetyfirst ♬ original sound – raising.the.vockys

And the internet, being the internet, was more than happy to play along.

Comments began rolling in from across South Africa, and then beyond our borders. In its three days of spreading online, the video has already reached over 4800 people with commenters in South Africa, Portugal, Mauritius, Namibia, Australia, the Netherlands, Vietnam, and Scotland.

And now, there’s an article. This one.

What started as a TikTok video – with Julie’s request limited to her comments section – has now become a headline. A story picked up by a real publication (hi!), read by people Julie has never met, in places she didn’t ask about. And who knows how many other articles, shares, or conversations the same video might spark from here?

Publications and platforms pick up stories from social media all the time. A TikTok becomes a trending topic, a school project becomes a global feel-good story, and a teacher’s experiment becomes a news article. Once something is shared online, it gains a life of its own.

Understanding how things spread on social media is one of the most important things a young person can know before they start posting, sharing, or even just commenting. What goes online stays online. Even a deleted post can be screenshotted, shared, or picked up somewhere else entirely – like, say, a news article.

And…sharing has consequences, both good and bad. Julie’s TikTok is an example of the good kind. There’s the bad, too. That’s why privacy is worth protecting, and knowing how far a post can travel helps kids understand why sharing personal information, even in the comments of something fun, is something to think carefully about.

Equipping children with digital literacy early doesn’t make them scared of the internet; it makes them smarter about it. And smarter is always a good thing!

So, Julie. From everyone who saw your TikTok, shared your story, or simply dropped their location in the comments to help a classroom of nine-year-olds understand the world they’re growing up in – thank you. We hope this helps!

Suzelle DIY and her bestie Marianne visited SANCCOB and spread the penguin love…because anybody can!

Cape Town, South Africa (26 March 2026) – The penguin-loving team at SANCCOB is currently working through one of their busiest seasons to date. Cheeps have filled the seabird nursery as they celebrate a record-breaking number of new hatchlings!

Over 180 hungry, growing chicks have hatched already, and there are over 100 more still incubating. Every single African penguin hatchling is hand-reared for the best possible chance at survival. Eventually, they’re released back into the sea where they belong.

South African icon Suzelle DIY and her bestie Marianne recently waddled into SANCCOB’s centre to learn more about our local penguin heroes and how they have protected the species – and other seabirds – for almost 60 years!

Suzelle and Marianne’s outing places a much-needed spotlight on SANCCOB. As much as the record number of hatchlings are a reason to celebrate, they are also a reason to support.

The demand that comes with hand-rearing hundreds of little penguin chicks is enormous. Each one requires feeding and medical care. Specialised equipment and disinfectants are also needed to protect them from disease and keep the nursery functioning.

There are many different ways to support SANCCOB. If you’re in Cape Town or Gqeberha, both centres welcome visitors and host daily tours – if your timing is right (and you book in advance) you might even get to enjoy the special experience of seeing penguins feed!

If being involved hands-on is more your thing, SANCCOB also encourages applications for long‑term interns who can assist with feeding and caring for the chicks. It offers structured four and six-month internships, with all training provided onsite! Essentially, you can become an African penguin hero and earn good working experience doing it.

If you’re nowhere near the coast, a campaign that launched recently allows supporters to ‘adopt’ a penguin egg. Your R300 contribution makes a meaningful difference in helping SANCCOB look after newcomer hatchlings. Follow this link to show your penguin love…because anybody can!

One of South Africa’s own is taking the lead in Ton!

South Africa (25 March 2026) – Netflix and Shondaland have confirmed that Bridgerton is back in production for its fifth season, and South African actress Masali Baduza is set to take centre stage!

Best known for her roles in The Woman King and Noughts + Crosses, the East London-born and Cape Town-raised actress is ready to bring some South African magic to the Regency-era drama as Michaela Stirling.

Masali made her first brief but memorable appearance in the Season 3 finale of the hit show. She then returned for three pivotal episodes in Season 4. Now, in the upcoming Season 5, the Mzansi star will take the spotlight alongside Hannah Dodd.

Dodd plays the introverted middle Bridgerton daughter, Francesca. Two years after the passing of her husband, John, she re-enters the marriage mart for practical intentions. Until Michaela returns…

“But when John’s cousin Michaela returns to London to tend to the Kilmartin estate, Fran’s complicated feelings will have her questioning whether to stick to her pragmatic intentions or pursue her inner passions.”

As they navigate their relationship, our two leading ladies face vulnerabilities and new discoveries that could change everything…

Masali recently celebrated the Season 4 premiere at home in Cape Town. Sharing her joy on social media, she expressed her gratitude for bringing the Ton to home soil.

“YOH YOU GUYS!!! I don’t even have enough words to express my gratitude for the past couple of days. I feel so lucky and proud to be able to share this momentous project at home (!!!) surrounded by family and friends. Enkosini from the bottom of my heart.” she wrote.

Photographer Martin Ras captured a rare glimpse of a police diver’s compassion and bravery, and the NSRI’s life-saving work.

Garden Route, South Africa (25 March 2026) – Mossel Bay photographer Martin Ras is rarely without his camera. He’s captured life, in all forms, as it unfolds along the Garden Route.

Last year in April, he happened to be on the scene when a local fisherman, Frans Quagga Smit, and his friend had been fishing along the rocks at The Point in Mossel Bay. The two had cast their lines and had been there for less than half an hour before it happened.

A massive wave had swept Frans right off the rocks and into the water.

Pulled beneath the surface for what must have felt like a lifetime, Frans finally came up gasping for air with his head just above water. But the current was strong and unrelenting, and no matter how hard he fought, it refused to give him back to shore. His friend couldn’t reach him, and after about 15 minutes battling water that had no intention of letting go, Frans knew he wasn’t getting back to safety on his own.

Thankfully, The Point was busy that day. Beachgoers had spotted the commotion and alerted the NSRI.

As rescue teams made their way there, a police diver, Andries Louw, dove straight in and heroically zipped through the water toward Frans. He reached him in just moments, wielding a pink rescue buoy that would help the fisherman stay afloat until he could be brought to safety.

The NSRI Station 15 team arrived shortly after, and the two were lifted from the water and brought safely back to shore.

Martin caught the entire thing on camera, capturing a rare glimpse of the police diver’s compassion and bravery, and the NSRI’s life-saving work that unfolds every day along our coastline. This week, he shared it online:

“For me, having a camera in hand during real-life moments like a sea rescue brings a mix of adrenaline, responsibility, and respect. You feel the urgency in the air, but at the same time, you understand your role , to document what’s happening as truthfully as possible. My camera is always with me because moments like these are real, raw, and important to capture.” Martin tells us.

By documenting and sharing these moments, he helps the world see, appreciate and support the work of the people who show up when it matters most – in this case, a brave police diver and the NSRI.

“I’ve had people ask why I recorded instead of helping, and my answer is simple: I’m a photographer, not a trained lifeguard or NSRI rescuer. In situations like that, the professionals are there to do the saving. My role is to tell the story, to show what unfolds, and to preserve a moment that many would never otherwise see.” he says.

Martin has been capturing life in Mossel Bay and further along the Garden Route for just about five years now. His passion for photography started long before.

“I started my career in the corporate world, working on the Sishen mine in the Northern Cape, where I travelled frequently between Johannesburg and the mine. It was during those trips that my passion for photography and video truly started to grow.” he says.

He and his family made the move to the coast just before lockdown. When Mossel Bay Tourism purchased one of his photographs, doors opened.

“Everything changed when Mossel Bay Tourism purchased one of my photos, which was later used on billboards across South Africa. Seeing my work out there made me realise that photography was more than just a hobby ,it was my calling. From that moment, I committed full-time to photography.”

Today Martin runs workshops teaching people how to capture great images on both smartphones and cameras, has built a membership community to help others grow, and sells fine art wildlife prints. Follow his work, or find out more, here.

One of the country’s most beloved choirs lost its founder this week. John Tungay passed away on 22 March, leaving behind a legacy of almost six decades in music. One that the Drakies just honoured so beautifully.

Drakensberg, South Africa (25 March 2026) – On 22 March, the founder of the world-renowned Drakensberg Boys Choir School, Mr. John Tungay, passed away.

The school shared the unfortunate news with their community this week.

“It is with deep sadness that the Drakensberg Boys Choir School mourns the passing of our founder, Mr. John Tungay, on 22 March. As a community, we honour a visionary whose faith, courage, and conviction in the power of music gave rise to one of South Africa’s most cherished institutions.” it said.

In the early ’60s, John was a choirmaster at the Trinity Congregational Church. Around this time, he approached his parents, who owned a farm in the Cathkin Valley, with an idea. He wanted to turn it into a choir school.

A few short years later, the Drakensberg Boys Choir School flung open its farmhouse doors.

Now, the world-class institution in the valleys holds a torch that continues to light up the lives and the voices of thousands of young men with incredible talent.

“When establishing the school in 1967, Mr. Tungay planted more than a choir — he planted a mission grounded in ministry, excellence, and the shaping of young men for lives of purpose and service. From those humble beginnings grew an iconic South African institution whose influence has echoed across continents. Because of his vision, generations of Drakies have carried our music across the world as proud ambassadors of South Africa’s rich cultural heritage. His legacy extends far beyond the stage. The boys who leave our valley today — confident, principled, and compassionate — stand as living proof of the dream he dared to pursue nearly six decades ago.”

The Drakensberg Boys Choir is known and loved around the world. Boys who come to the valley to find their voices leave as young men. Shaped, says the school, to be confident, principled and compassionate.

Every one of them carries something of John Tungay’s original vision with them when they go.

“As we grieve, we also give thanks for a life so purposefully lived. The song of the Drakensberg Boys Choir — the harmony of discipline, joy, faith, and excellence — exists because he believed it could. We honour him, we remember him, and we commit to carrying his vision forward. To the Tungay family, we extend our heartfelt sympathy and prayers. May his legacy live on in every note sung and every life shaped by the school he founded. May the Lord bless his memory, and may his song continue in all of us.”

The choir has dedicated their moving rendition of Mzwandile Mabuza’s ‘Duduz’umoya Wami’ to Mr Tungay and his family. We’ve shared their moving tribute below.

When cuddles come with a view…It’s the timeline cleanser you didn’t ask for but definitely needed!

Cape Town, South Africa (24 March 2026) – If your heart needs some warming today, this is the medicine.

Dassies are part of the furniture on Table Mountain. They might look like small rabbits without ears, but don’t let their tiny size fool you! They’ve got the biggest personalities.

Also called ‘rock hyraxes’ and affectionately known as little potatoes, they live on the Mother City’s most popular mountain – its rocky nooks and crannies make the perfect hiding spot from the villain in their story, the Black Eagle.

But not these two dassies, and not today. These two potatoes chose good views and cosy cuddles without a worry in mind.

The video, uploaded to social media by Table Mountain Experience, has racked up almost 200,000 views for its cuteness!

Dassies live in colonies of up to 80 animals, and have become somewhat used to the presence of humans along their Table Mountain turf. Some of the older individuals have become tame due to long exposure and needless feeding, our sources state.

If you do ever cross paths with a dassie on a trail, it’s wiser not to feed them. Their food sources of flowers, bulbs, roots, grass and sometimes insects and grubs are in ample supply on the mountain.

Interestingly, these little potatoes work together to avoid danger.

While the majority enjoy their time sun-bathing, others, called sentries, keep watch for Black Eagles. Eagles attack from the direction of the sun, using the bright light to avoid detection. But evolution accounted for this, and gave dassies a unique membrane that coats their eyes and shields their pupils against the sun, allowing them to pre-empt danger.

But these two definitely aren’t sentries on the watch. They’re living the soft life, while the knights are on guard somewhere nearby.
