This is a heartbreaking update to a story that, with the help of a community, still has a chance at a happy ending.

Johannesburg, South Africa (02 April 2026) – Last week, we shared the story of Rosie, a mother who put out a humble call to her community, hoping to make her daughter’s matric farewell special.

After suffering a cerebrovascular stroke in 2023, she has been navigating life with a disability, raising two young children alone, and carrying the mounting weight of everything. Still, she kept both children in school, and with the help of the Randburg community, she gave her daughter the matric dance of her dreams last week.

It was everything she hoped for and more.

This week, we received heartbreaking news.

Rosie and her two children, aged eighteen and twelve, have been evicted from their home in Riverside View. She had been struggling to cover rent, taking on freelance work wherever she could and eventually launching a BackaBuddy appeal for help. It wasn’t enough.

At midnight last night, Rosie and her children arrived at the gate of One Small Act of Kindness, a moving truck behind them.

“At around midnight, a truck arrived at our gate with a mom and her two children. She had just been evicted,” OSAOK shared. “She’s weak, walking with a crutch, and clearly terrified. The landlord had her belongings loaded up and removed. With no strength or stability to fight it, she had no choice but to leave.”

Sadly, OSAOK had no space or means to take them in. All they could do at that moment was direct the family to the nearest police station for the night, and put out a call for help.

“Right now, we unfortunately don’t have the means or space to take her in, and that is one of the hardest things to sit with,” said Kelly-Ann, founder of OSAOK. “But I cannot ignore what I saw tonight — the fear in her eyes and the uncertainty in her children’s faces.”

Rosie and her children spent the night at the Diepsloot police station. Their belongings were dropped at a local church, where they remain outside in a yard.

“We’re walking around not knowing what to do or where to go,” she told us this morning. “I can see the frustration in my kids. My daughter was supposed to be at school today, the matrics are still busy, but we’re out in the streets. My heart aches seeing them like this.”

Rosie’s stroke left her with lasting effects on her mobility and muscle function, and she continues to need ongoing care and monitoring.

For a woman already carrying so much, this has been a devastating blow.

The team at One Small Act of Kindness have stepped up. There is hope. While the road ahead is still uncertain, the shelter has called on its community of supporters to help find Rosie and her children a place to land.

“We will do everything we can on our side to assist where possible, but we need help from the community on this one,” OSAOK shared.

With the right people behind them, this small family can find their feet again. If you would like to help, please reach out to One Small Act of Kindness on 082 513 2042.

One Small Act of Kindness is turning everyday items into meaningful support, ensuring donated goods and essentials reach those who need them most.

Johannesburg, South Africa (01 April 2026) – Behind every donation is a story, and for a community-driven initiative by One Small Act of Kindness, every single item that comes through the door is treated with care.

At their charity shop, it’s all about making sure they reach the people who need them most and doing it in a way that restores dignity along the way.

When donations arrive, the process starts. Items are sorted thoughtfully, with priority given to families and charities already receiving direct support. And what remains doesn’t go to waste. Instead, it finds its way into a charity store designed to serve the wider community.

And this isn’t your typical store. Prices are intentionally kept low, with most items ranging between just a few rand, and larger goods still staying affordable. The goal is to make everyday essentials accessible to people who might otherwise go without.

This approach stands out because of the thinking behind it. Rather than simply giving everything away, there’s a belief that even a small contribution can make a big difference. When people pay something (even if it’s minimal) there’s a sense of pride and value attached to what they receive.

The impact doesn’t stop there. Every two weeks, the initiative partners with smaller, often overlooked organisations. The ones doing meaningful work quietly, without the spotlight. These groups are invited to collect goods and distribute them within their own communities, extending the reach far beyond one location.

There’s also a strong sense of urgency. Items aren’t stored away for months. They move quickly because the need is immediate. For many, these aren’t just second-hand goods, but essentials that make a real difference in daily life.

At its core, it’s about people helping people and creating a system where generosity its purpose.

And for those looking to give back, the door is always open. Donations can be dropped off at 24 Darnoc Avenue in Bordeaux, Johannesburg.

The providers of support, diginity and a hand-up currently find themselves in need of a helping hand to restock their bare cupboards in order to feed families whose daily hope rests on them.

Johannesburg, South Africa (03 March 2026)One Small Act of Kindness (OSAOK), the Johannesburg charity dedicated to providing a “hand up” rather than just a handout, is currently facing a difficult chapter.

The food supplied for the organisation’s men’s shelter and charity school is critically low. Founder Kelly-Ann van der Meer describes the situation with sobering honesty:

“We aren’t just ‘planning ahead’ low. We are actually low.”

For Kelly-Ann and her team, this isn’t just about empty shelves; it’s about the many souls who rely on OSAOK for their only meal of the day.

“There’s something heavy about standing in a kitchen knowing you need to stretch what’s left. We never want to get to that point.”

The organisation is currently appealing to the OSAOK army to help restock on the essentials the team requires to help prepare hearty and filling meals for those who have nowhere else to turn.

These grocery items include:

  • 5kg Chicken
  • Fish fingers
  • Viennas
  • Maize meal 10kg (x8)
  • Rice 10kg (x8)
  • Pasta 5kg
  • Fruit
  • Potatoes
  • Soya mince (x8 boxes)
  • Tinned fish (x12 tins)

“These are the basics that keep plates full and stomachs settled. If you’re doing a grocery shop this week and you’re able to add one extra item, just one, it truly helps more than you realise. Community isn’t about grand gestures. It’s about showing up when it counts.”

If you are in a position to help, drop-offs can be made at:

  • 24 Darnoc Avenue, Randburg
  • 47 Magnolia Street, Sharonlea

Alternatively, monetary donations can be made to:

  • First National Bank
  • One Small Act Of Kindness
  • Account: 62673388073
  • Branch: 250655
  • Ref: Men’s Shelter / Happy Hours

We all know what it’s like to need a win. For J, that win started with a gifted suit and ended with a job offer and a future reclaimed!

Johannesburg, South Africa (16 February 2026) – In the thick of rebuilding, whether it’s after a job loss, a personal crisis, or enduring a string of bad luck, the burden of “starting over” can feel overwhelming, if not entirely paralysing. And it’s not that one lacks the will to do the work, but rather that the gap between where they are and where they need to be is wider than their reach.

Recently, South Africans played a wonderful part in the story of a young man known as J, offering a hand up to significantly bridge that gap and move from unemployment to being ready for the job he had been preparing for.

J had connected with the One SMALL Act of Kindness charity, which opened its doors to him. He stayed at the men’s shelter after falling on hard times. Still determined to improve his circumstances, he shared his hope to secure employment despite not having the appropriate clothing to show up for a job interview.

One SMALL Act of Kindness sent out an appeal for men’s suits and smart clothing on their social media platforms, and the response wasn’t just amazing, but truly life-changing for J.

Last Friday, J was able to clean up, dress up and show up for a job interview. He certainly impressed as he shared an update that secured the job and will be moving out of the shelter into his own little space to call home at the end of the month.

“Thank you for showing up for others time and time again. We are so excited for J and his new adventure. This is why we do what we do,” said Kelly-Ann van der Meer, founder of One Small Act of Kindness.

A hand up has changed J’s circumstances from starting over to moving forward. As he prepares for relocation and his new and better chapter, J is hopeful for donations of blankets, a small pot and basics.

A late-night search in Johannesburg ended in relief after residents, security teams and police worked together to safely reunite a young boy with his family.

South Africa (29 January 2026) – What began as a simple message about a missing child quickly became a moment that reminded a Johannesburg community just how powerful it can be when people choose to act.

Concern travelled just as fast when word spread that a young boy had gone missing. For the team at One SMALL Act of Kindness, this felt close to home, that doing nothing simply wasn’t an option.

Instead, they stepped out into the neighbourhood and began searching, joined almost immediately by people who didn’t hesitate to help. Members of the community, private security teams and law enforcement officers worked side by side, checking parks, garages, nearby streets and local shops. What could have been an overwhelming situation turned into a coordinated effort driven by care, urgency and compassion.

That collective effort paid off as the boy was eventually found asleep near a busy road. He was safe, but clearly shaken. Later, it was clear that fear played a huge role. Being lost, and he feared not knowing how to explain what happened.

From there, the focus shifted to getting him home, which was what mattered most.

He was reunited with his family at the Linden Police Station, bringing an anxious search to a relieved and emotional end. After hours of uncertainty, he was back where he belonged, surrounded by people who had been desperately trying to find him. Individuals, security teams and JMPD officers gave their time, energy and compassion without being asked twice.

For One Small Act of Kindness, this moment captured exactly what their name stands for. Sometimes it’s not grand gestures that change outcomes, but ordinary people choosing to help a stranger simply because they can.

Through small acts of kindness from a community that rallies for those in need, a difficult start to the year for four families has been transformed into a season of renewed hope.

Johannesburg, South Africa (26 January 2026) – The power of kindness can brighten a day, shift the course of difficult circumstances, and even open the gateway to a better life. For four families in desperate need of a helping hand, kindness made a way where there seemed to be none.

One SMALL Act of Kindness (OSAOK) has had numerous requests come in for help in January, and shared how the respective families had reached out to the charity in their hour of need.

Two families had children sitting at home, unable to return to school due to a lack of funds. One family needed just R500 for their child to continue their schooling. In another case, a single mother was stuck waiting for a school to refund a R500 registration fee so she could enrol her child elsewhere.

Then there was a single male who had travelled to Johannesburg for a job, only to never hear back from the prospective employer. He was left stranded and without money, leaving him to fend for himself on the streets with no way to get back home.

Another cry for help came from a woman OSAOK helped take off the streets. They helped send out her CV to various places, resulting in two job interviews towards the end of last year. OSAOK has been providing temporary rental assistance to ensure she doesn’t have to return to the streets while she gets on her feet.

While these families and individuals faced a gruelling start to the year, the situation changed the moment OSAOK shared their stories. Kindness stepped in and turned the tide.

“We are absolutely over the moon to share that all the families below have been sorted! You are all absolutely amazing. Sharing the kindness and keeping hope alive is hard, but tonight we did it again. With your help, we can change a life and make life a little easier for others,” shares OSAOK Founder, Kelly-Ann Van Der Meer.

In a month that began with uncertainty and hardship, the overwhelming support for these four families proves that when a community chooses to care, hope always finds a way home.

Happy Hours Nursery School prepares for 2026, after a challenging year, with renewed hope, ready classrooms and a call for community support.

South Africa (14 January 2026) – After a challenging year, the team behind Happy Hours, a charity nursery school run by One Small Act of Kindness, is stepping into 2026 with renewed energy, fresh classrooms and big hopes for the little lives they support every day. While 2025 tested the resilience of the school, giving up was never an option. Especially knowing just how vital this safe, nurturing space is for so many children.

The school is now fully prepped and ready for the new year, looking bright, welcoming and filled with excitement for what lies ahead. For the educators and caregivers, the real reward comes from watching young minds grow, explore and develop in an environment built on care, patience and love. Every classroom, activity and routine plays a role in shaping confident, curious little learners.

As the school prepares for the year ahead, community support remains essential. There are several ways to get involved, from sponsoring a child at R350 per month, to donating stationery, art supplies and learning materials that help bring lessons to life. The school is also seeking practical items such as carpets for classrooms, gross motor equipment, activity containers, groceries for the tough January period, sandpit salt and outdoor green paint to enhance play spaces.

Happy Hours Nursery School believes that with collective effort, 2026 can be a year of growth, stability and opportunity for every child who walks through its doors. No matter the contribution, big or small, it helps build a safe and supportive foundation for young learners to thrive.

To learn more about how to support the school, sponsor a child or donate supplies, you can get in touch directly or email info@onesmallactofkindness.org.za.

The organisation is collecting Christmas boxes for the homeless, the elderly, and for children who would otherwise not receive prezzies at all.

Johannesburg, South Africa (09 December 2025) – This year, Johannesburg-based nonprofit organisation One Small Act of Kindness is gearing up to make Christmas special for over 1000 people who could do with the extra bit of festive joy.

The organisation hopes to raise 500 Elf Boxes for the kiddies, 200 Community Care boxes for the homeless, and 500 Golden Oldie boxes for the elderly.

For some, Christmas is the most wonderful time of the year. For others, it’s the loneliest and most difficult. Each box pledged to One Small Act of Kindness contains items that bring dignity, love and warmth to underprivileged people, young and old, who often go without spoils or gifts.

In order to meet their goal of 500 Elf Boxes for the kiddies this year, the organisation still needs 100 more boxes. Each box will go towards making sure that young children like Lebo and Daniel get to unwrap something special on Christmas morning.

“[Lebo’s] the little girl who shares everything, even when she has very little. Her mom works long hours to keep things afloat and December often brings more stress than celebration. Lebo dreams of having something just for her a soft toy, a colouring set, a treat she doesn’t have to give away.”

“[Daniel’s] the oldest sibling, already playing the ‘protector’ role far too young. He smiles bravely, but he knows Christmas doesn’t usually come with presents. He watches other children unwrap gifts and pretends he doesn’t mind but his eyes tell the truth.” shares the organisation.

Each Elf Box contains a packet of sweets, a colouring book, pencils or crayons, a toy, socks and bubbles. They’re small items that bring a moment of pure joy to children from different parts of the country, with different stories, facing different struggles. They carry the same quiet Christmas wish to feel seen, valued, and remembered.

If you would like to support the cause, drop-offs can be made at 47 Magnolia St, Sharonlea and 24 Darnoc Ave, Bordeaux.

When she couldn’t find her car keys anywhere, Kelly-Ann van der Meer’s lifesaver turned out to be a friendly helper in a reflective yellow jacket at a Randburg shopping centre!

Randburg, South Africa (10 November 2025) – We’ve all had those crazy days when we find ourselves rushing and overwhelmed before our brains can catch up, easily forgetting, misplacing, or losing the little-big things we need to survive those days.

One Small Act of Kindness Founder, Kelly-Ann van der Meer, found herself having one of those crazy days while rushing into the Ferndale on Republic shopping centre last week. Her car keys were that little-big thing that mistakenly slipped through the cracks – or rather, from her purse.

In a post, she opened up about how a moment of panic as she frantically searched for the keys turned into heartwarming relief thanks to a friendly helper in a reflective yellow jacket!

“While rushing into Ferndale on Republic, I thought I had popped the car keys in my handbag, but I dropped them in the parking lot.

“While walking out, I was searching and searching for the car keys in my handbag and starting to panic. I have three compartments ONLY, AND MY bag is tiny,” Kelly-Ann shared.

Soon, Josy, a friendly car guard, approached her, smiling before asking whether she was okay.

“I think he could see the panic.”

Kelly-Ann informed Josy that she was looking for her keys. Josy responded with “many many questions” about what the keys in question looked like before pulling them out with a simple and smiley: “I got them”.

He went on to explain that she had dropped them in the parking lot – instantly becoming Kelly-Ann’s shining light!

“My heart danced, that’s for sure. Thank you, Josy, for being you and your heart! I can’t tell you what a blessing you were to me that day! Now, when I visit Ferndale I have a new friend,” she said with palpable appreciation.

Thanks to the friendly and kind car guard, a hectic day that could have spiralled into disaster instead concluded on a heartwarming note. His gesture is a beautiful reminder of the power of helping one another, especially when life gets “a little too crazy.”

Shaun struggled with lost opportunities, Keketso was desperate to rewrite his matric, and Jabulani needed assistance in obtaining his ID. Despite facing significant setbacks, they were each able to turn their lives around for the better with a hand up from the One Small Act of Kindness angels.

Johannesburg, South Africa (11 September 2025) – Though we come into this world alone. The truth is, we need a community to help, guide, support and lift us. For three men, One SMALL Act of Kindness (OSAOK) provided that community when life had thrown them one too many curveballs, throwing them off course.

Shaun once had big plans, but when the world pushed him down, he struggled to get back up. He found himself on the streets, carrying not only the weight of survival but also the burden of lost opportunities.

He joined OSAOK’s men’s shelter some time ago, and during that time played a key role in lending a helping hand where it was needed and volunteered in community cleanups.

“For the last two months, we have assisted in getting his PDP, license renewed, and past fines paid up to help his new venture get on track,” OSAOK shares.

The outcome? Today, Shaun has his very own car through a popular e-hailing service provider and begins his journey as a driver. What’s more, at the end of this month, he will be moving into his very own place!

Another touching testimony is of Keketso, who wanted more than anything to rewrite his matric, knowing he could get better results than those he’d achieved back in high school.

Through support received from OSAOK, he was able to realise this goal and received his new and improved national senior certificate recently.

“This is what happens when people believe in you,” a proud Keketso said.

OSAOK also assisted a gentleman known as Jabulani to obtain his ID, a crucial document for accessing and obtaining just about anything in life.

A grateful Jabulani collected his new ID smart card this week and didn’t hesitate to go book a test for his learner’s license immediately after – an opportunity that wouldn’t have been possible before.

This is the power of having a community that recognises and believes in your ability, drive and will to do better.

These three men’s journeys are beautiful reminders that with support, dignity, and belief in second chances, lives can be rebuilt! We wish them all the best on their new chapters and applaud OSAOK for giving them a hand up.
