19-year-old Nqobani Mokoena shines on his Proteas debut, dedicating his performance to his mother and marking a dream start to his international career.
New Zealand (17 March 2026) – There are debuts… and then there are moments that mean so much more.
For Nqobani Mokoena, his first outing in Proteas colours was not just about stepping onto the international stage, but honouring the journey that got him there.
The 19-year-old fast bowler announced himself in style, delivering a standout performance to claim Player of the Match on debut in the T20I series against New Zealand’s national cricket team. With figures of 3/26 at the Bay Oval in Mount Maunganui, Mokoena ensured the hosts were kept under 100.
It was the emotion behind the performance that stood out.
“Nqoba in Zulu means to conquer. So I dedicate my performance tonight to my mom,” Mokoena said. “My mom had to conquer a lot in life… she raised us as a single mom, me and my brother. My mom is like my everything.”
It was a moment years in the making. From township cricket to sharing the Proteas stage with familiar faces like Andile Simelane, who handed him his cap, the occasion carried deep personal meaning.
“I was quite happy that he gave me the cap… it’s been our dream to be here together.”
Despite a nervy start with the ball, he found his rhythm when it mattered most.
“Through out the game I thought of SA20, and that made me feel a bit more chilled. So I just backed what I did there.”
It was more than just a dream debut, but a moment shaped by sacrifice, belief, and the journey that brought him here.
A Very Special Debut! 🇿🇦
