With rugby celebrations across the country, this milestone celebration brings together schoolboy rugby, tradition, and a deep sense of brotherhood that has defined Pretoria Boys High for generations.

Pretoria, South Africa (07 April 2026) – Pretoria Boys High School, one of the oldest schools in Pretoria, is celebrating 125 years of excellence this year. What better way to mark the milestone than with a rugby festival on the hallowed Brooks Field?

Across the country, rugby festivals have become a staple of the school calendar, bringing together some of the best young talent and fiercest rivalries. From one province to the next, they’re about tradition, connection, and a shared love for the game. And in Pretoria, Boys High’s contribution to that landscape carries a legacy of its own.

As the school celebrates 125 years of excellence, its rugby festival becomes more than just a weekend of fixtures. It’s a gathering of history, pride, and a brotherhood that stretches across generations.

For director of rugby Paul Anthony, the real significance lies beyond the touchline.

“I think it’s like a family. The school’s based on the old boys, it’s like a brotherhood. The guys just stick together and go on forever. It’s a massive bond.”

That sense of belonging is something he knows well. Anthony himself walked these fields as a learner in the mid-1970s before returning years later as a coach.

It’s a cycle that extends beyond him. Having coached some of the very figures who now lead the school, and with his own sons having come through the system, his connection to Pretoria Boys High runs deep.

“My sons were right here,” he says. “They’re now overseas, but they’ll be watching, and by four o’clock they’ll be telling me what we did right and wrong. That’s how invested they are.”

While the festival showcases high-level competition, Anthony is quick to emphasise that schoolboy rugby should be about more than just winning.

“People come for the rugby and the competition, but also to catch up with their mates. There’ll be a tent full tonight, just reminiscing. That’s what it’s about.”

As the school celebrates 125 years, Anthony is clear about the kind of legacy it hopes to leave behind.

“The legacy should be to send well-educated, well-mannered young men into the world,” he says. “Men who love this country and want to make a difference.”

The SA Youth Rugby Medical Assistance Fund is calling on the public to support injured players like Sandile and Wian, whose family now faces overwhelming medical costs after a serious head injury.

South Africa (07 April 2026) – It all started as a mission to support young rugby players in crisis. Now it is becoming a lifeline for families facing some of their toughest moments. The SA Youth Rugby Medical Assistance Fund is stepping in where help is needed most. By ensuring that injured players are not left to face the aftermath alone.

Right now, that support is focused on a young player named Sandile, who suffered a serious head injury that included a fractured skull and a blood clot on the brain. No one prepares for these injuries and unfortunately, his situation has been made even more difficult by the fact that his medical insurance has declined to cover the costs.

Sandile’s mother, who is currently unemployed, is raising him on her own following the passing of his father. With hospital bills expected to be significantly high, the financial pressure has quickly become overwhelming. Despite efforts to share his story across various rugby communities, support has been limited so far. This shows just how many families face these battles quietly, without the backing they need.

It’s exactly why the SA Youth Rugby Medical Assistance Fund exists. The organisation was created to ensure that young players, regardless of their background or visibility, have access to support during moments like these. For those behind the initiative, this work is deeply personal, driven by lived experiences of navigating serious rugby injuries without adequate medical cover.

As part of their efforts to raise funds, the organisation has launched a “Fill My Tank” raffle. With fuel prices continuing to climb, the prize of a full tank of petrol or diesel is both practical and timely, while also contributing to a meaningful cause.

Tickets are available at R20 each, or R100 for six entries, with the draw set to take place on 18 April 2026. Every entry goes towards supporting injured school rugby players like Sandile, helping ease the financial burden on their families during incredibly difficult times.

The fund is also supporting another young player, Wian Botha, a 15-year-old from Krugersdorp whose rugby journey has been put on hold after suffering two concussions last year. He has since been diagnosed with post-concussion syndrome and now requires at least six months of ongoing treatment to recover fully. Like Sandile, Wian’s situation highlights just how quickly things can change for young athletes, and how important it is to have support systems in place.

More than anything, this is about community. Showing up, even in small ways, for those who need it most.

For more information or to get involved, follow the SA Youth Rugby Medical Assistance Fund on their social media platforms via the link here.

South Africa’s URC teams were in fine form on home turf this past weekend, keeping momentum strong as the season heads toward the final stretch.

South Africa (31 March 2026) – South Africa’s United Rugby Championship sides were in full flow this past weekend. And the result was a clean sweep at home that had fans smiling across the country.

All four local teams stepped up, each delivering strong performances to make it a memorable round of action.

Sharks vs Cardiff

The Sharks got things started in Durban, taking on Cardiff Rugby in a tightly contested encounter. It wasn’t always smooth sailing, with a few handling errors creeping in, but the Sharks showed enough composure and attacking intent to come out on top and keep themselves in the playoff conversation.

Bulls vs Munster

In Pretoria, the Bulls were involved in one of the standout clashes of the round against Munster Rugby. It was a high-intensity battle that went down to the wire, with the Bulls holding their nerve in the closing stages to secure a valuable result in front of their home crowd.

Lions vs Dragons

Over in Johannesburg, the Lions delivered an energetic performance against Dragons RFC. Playing with confidence and attacking freedom, they made the most of their chances and continued their strong run of form at home.

Stormers vs Edinburgh

And in Cape Town, the Stormers wrapped up the perfect weekend with a composed display against Edinburgh Rugby. Their ability to control the game and take key opportunities saw them maintain their push near the top of the standings.

With the competition taking a short break before the next round, South Africa’s teams will head into it with confidence, knowing they’ve made the most of home advantage.

Springbok and Bafana Bafana captains united in Durban before Bafana’s clash against Panama, celebrating national pride.

Durban, South Africa (29 March 2026) – There’s just something special about seeing South Africa’s leaders come together, and this was one of those moments.

Siya Kolisi made a memorable stop at the Bafana Bafana camp in Durban, linking up with Ronwen Williams and the squad ahead of their international clash against Panama. And yes, he arrived in the newly released Bafana Bafana jersey, fully embracing the moment.

With the Springboks edging closer to their own return to action, Kolisi took time out to show support to the national football team, reminding them of the responsibility and pride that come with wearing the badge. It was a powerful show of unity between two of the country’s biggest sporting codes. And a reminder that, at the end of the day, it’s all one flag.

For Williams, the focus quickly shifted back to business on the pitch.

“We have analysed them, we have watched some video clips, and we have familiarised ourselves about them. They are a team we have to take seriously because they do not need a lot of chances to punish you, and that is what we saw in their last World Cup qualifier.”

The Bafana captain knew exactly what was at stake, especially against a side that turns small moments into big problems. Head coach Hugo Broos looked for a response from his team, backing them to rediscover the energy.

“The only thing I want to see is the real Bafana Bafana.”

As the countdown continues for both national teams in their respective seasons, this crossover moment offered a refreshing reminder of the unity within South African sport.

Bafana Bafana drew 1-1 to Panama.

A heartfelt welcome from SESI Rugby in Brazil gave the Springbok Women’s Sevens a warm welcome before the intensity of competition began.

São Paulo, Brazil (29 March 2026) – Before a single pass could be thrown, the Springbok Women’s Sevens were already smiling, and it had nothing to do with rugby.

Touching down in São Paulo for their next stop on the HSBC SVNS series, the South African squad were met with the kind of welcome that goes beyond sport. At SESI Rugby, a group of young players gathered to greet them with song, dance and proudly waved South African flags. Different countries, different languages, but one shared love for the game.

And while the focus would shift back to rugby, it was clear the team were in a much better space heading into this leg of the competition. After a challenging travel schedule the week before, the squad had time to properly settle in, reset and prepare.

Playmaker Byrhandré Dolf shared that the extra time made a real difference, allowing the team to review their performances, sharpen up on small details, approaching the weekend with more clarity.

There was also a sense of freedom in the camp. With qualification for the World Rugby Championship already secured, the pressure lifted slightly, giving the players a chance to express themselves and play with confidence.

Their opening clash against Spain offered an opportunity to do just that, especially after a narrow loss in their previous meeting. But beyond the tactics and matchups, this weekend felt like something more.

One notable absence was top try-scorer Maria Tshiremba, who has been rested due to a niggle, but the squad remained confident in their depth and unity.

Still, that welcome in Brazil set the tone.

1995 World Cup-winning captain gets honoured with a doctorate from the University of Johannesburg and reflects on his journey, mentors, and the power of sport to unite a nation.

Johannesburg, South Africa (27 March 2026) – Many will remember the moment during the 1995 Rugby World Cup when former Springbok captain Francois Pienaar delivered one of the most iconic lines in South African sport.

“We didn’t have 60,000 South Africans, we had 43 million South Africans.”

It was a response that captured far more than a match-day atmosphere.

Years later, that same spirit of leadership and unity continues to define Pienaar’s legacy. This week, he was awarded an honorary doctorate by the University of Johannesburg, recognising his contribution not only to sport, but to society at large.

Pienaar, who famously captained the Springboks to victory in 1995 under the leadership of former president Nelson Mandela, remains a towering figure in South African sport. That historic triumph, achieved during a transformative period in the country, continues to stand as a powerful symbol of unity, resilience and hope.

In his acceptance speech, he reflected on the journey that shaped him, describing the moment as deeply personal.

“I feel like one of the luckiest sportsmen in the country. I have had the opportunity to experience what sport can do. This is indeed a full circle moment for me, and I feel very blessed to be able to receive this accolade from the University today.”

His connection to the institution runs deep. It was at one of its legacy campuses, then known as Rand Afrikaans University, where his rugby journey gained momentum through a scholarship.

He also took time to acknowledge the figures who played a pivotal role in his journey, paying tribute to both his former coach and one of the country’s most influential leaders.

“Allow me to highlight two giants, Moir ‘Kitch’ Christie, our coach, mentor, a fighter, a believer and a genius, and Nelson Mandela. The reason I am getting this honorary degree is because of these giants on whose shoulders I was able to stand from a very young age.”

Beyond his playing days, Pienaar has remained actively involved in shaping the future of South African sport and youth development. From leadership roles in rugby to founding initiatives like the Varsity Cup and supporting education through the Make A Difference Leadership Foundation, his impact continues off the field.

Addressing graduates and young people, he emphasised the importance of hard work, critical thinking and maintaining a positive outlook.

From lifting the Webb Ellis Cup to receiving one of the country’s highest academic honours, his journey remains a reflection of what leadership and purpose ca achieve.

While in South Africa, Boan Venter had his Edinburgh Rugby teammates answering everything with “lekker” in a playful Afrikaans lesson.

Johannesburg, South Africa (23 March 2026) – During their visit to South Africa for their clash against the Lions in the United Rugby Championship, Boan Venter decided to give his Edinburgh Rugby teammates a taste of local flavour by teaching them some Afrikaans.

From commenting on the grounds to chatting about the scoreboard, the Edinburgh players tried to keep up, laughing along as they stumbled through understanding what was being asked.

He asked them questions like, “What’s your favourite thing you’ve done since being in SA?” and “How was training in the sun today?” And the answers came rolling in… almost all the same: “Lekker!” Whether it was good sleep, the sunny weather, or training on the pitch, Venter’s teammates discovered that in South Africa, “lekker” really is the default answer for everything.

All laughing at the quirks of their new vocabulary and trying to answer the questions in a language they don’t understand, the players embraced the challenge with good humour.

It was all smiles and laughter, proving that even in professional sport, there’s always room for fun.

A second-place finish in Montevideo secures the Bok Women’s Sevens a top-four spot and qualification for the HSBC SVNS World Championship.

Montevideo, Uruguay (23 March 2026) –  The Bok Women are officially World Championship-bound! And they made sure to do it with flair.

A powerful run at the HSBC SVNS Montevideo saw the South Africans secure a second-place finish, locking in their spot among the top four teams on the series standings with one tournament still to play. That’s all they needed to punch their ticket to the upcoming World Championship events in Hong Kong, Valladolid and Bordeaux.

While the final didn’t quite go their way, going down 22-10 to Argentina, the bigger picture tells a much more exciting story. Earlier in the day, the Bok Women reminded everyone exactly what they’re capable of with a dominant 27-0 win over Kenya. It was a statement performance. And that was their third straight clean sheet in Uruguay.

Speedster Maria Tshiremba got things rolling in style, finishing brilliantly in the corner after a slick move from a scrum. Byrhandré Dolf added a brace, while Patience Mokone sealed the deal with two strong finishes of her own, brushing off defenders with ease.

Defensively, South Africa were just as impressive, shutting Kenya out completely and controlling the tempo from start to finish. In the final, they came out firing again. Lerato Makua struck early from the kick-off to give South Africa the perfect start, before Tshiremba added another to edge them into a narrow halftime lead.

With back-to-back runner-up finishes and a place secured among the world’s best, the team continues to build serious momentum at just the right time.

Next stop: Brazil. And with confidence this high, the team looks ready to keep raising the bar.

And this time it came with the ultimate prize. A 10–7 win over Fiji in the final of the HSBC SVNS New York not only secured another tournament victory, but also crowned South Africa the 2026 series champions.

And trust the Blitzboks to do it in the most nail-biting fashion possible.

With both teams locked level on log points heading into the final, the stage was set for a dramatic showdown.

South Africa took control early through tries by Gino Cupido and Tristan Leyds to build a 10–0 lead before Fiji fought back to make it a one-score game. A dramatic final attack from Fiji had fans on edge, but the Blitzboks’ trademark defence held firm to secure the win.

Fiji launched one last attacking with just seconds left on the clock. But in a twist of relief for the men in green and gold, a knock-on ended the threat.

Earlier in the day, South Africa had already shown their fighting spirit in the semi-finals against Argentina. Tries from Sebastiaan Jobb and a brilliant 70-metre effort by Selvyn Davids secured a 14–5 victory and a spot in the final.

But the bigger picture here? A series being claimed.

Joseph Dweba introduces British teammate Lewis Pearson to classic South African treats, from Ouma rusks to Ghost Pops.

England, United Kingdom (06 March 2026) – Joseph Dweba knows rugby is more than just a game; it’s also about sharing a bit of home. The South African recently introduced his Exeter Chiefs teammate, Lewis Pearson, to a delicious taste of South Africa, taking him on a snack journey he won’t soon forget.

First up were Ouma rusks. “Oh-my-biscuits”.

Next up were Ghost Pops, a popular South African snack. Lewis tried them and said they reminded him of what the British snack called Wotsits.

The exchange wasn’t rushed. Each bite came with a story, a tip, and a shared laugh. A great moment of bonding, bridging cultures one tasty snack at a time.

Whether it was the comforting dunk of a rusk or the crunch of a Ghost Pop, Joseph made sure Lewis got a genuine taste of South Africa.
