With rugby celebrations across the country, this milestone celebration brings together schoolboy rugby, tradition, and a deep sense of brotherhood that has defined Pretoria Boys High for generations.

Pretoria, South Africa (07 April 2026) – Pretoria Boys High School, one of the oldest schools in Pretoria, is celebrating 125 years of excellence this year. What better way to mark the milestone than with a rugby festival on the hallowed Brooks Field?

Across the country, rugby festivals have become a staple of the school calendar, bringing together some of the best young talent and fiercest rivalries. From one province to the next, they’re about tradition, connection, and a shared love for the game. And in Pretoria, Boys High’s contribution to that landscape carries a legacy of its own.

As the school celebrates 125 years of excellence, its rugby festival becomes more than just a weekend of fixtures. It’s a gathering of history, pride, and a brotherhood that stretches across generations.

For director of rugby Paul Anthony, the real significance lies beyond the touchline.

“I think it’s like a family. The school’s based on the old boys, it’s like a brotherhood. The guys just stick together and go on forever. It’s a massive bond.”

That sense of belonging is something he knows well. Anthony himself walked these fields as a learner in the mid-1970s before returning years later as a coach.

It’s a cycle that extends beyond him. Having coached some of the very figures who now lead the school, and with his own sons having come through the system, his connection to Pretoria Boys High runs deep.

“My sons were right here,” he says. “They’re now overseas, but they’ll be watching, and by four o’clock they’ll be telling me what we did right and wrong. That’s how invested they are.”

While the festival showcases high-level competition, Anthony is quick to emphasise that schoolboy rugby should be about more than just winning.

“People come for the rugby and the competition, but also to catch up with their mates. There’ll be a tent full tonight, just reminiscing. That’s what it’s about.”

As the school celebrates 125 years, Anthony is clear about the kind of legacy it hopes to leave behind.

“The legacy should be to send well-educated, well-mannered young men into the world,” he says. “Men who love this country and want to make a difference.”

In hospitals across South Africa, there are patients lying in hospital beds whose recovery depends on something many of us can give in just 30 minutes,  blood.

South Africa (29 March 2026) – This Easter, while many South Africans prepare to travel, rest, and spend time with loved ones, there is a different kind of call being made quietly in hospitals across the country, one that cannot be ignored.

It is the call of a mother watching her child fight for survival.

The call of a patient on an operating table.

The call of someone whose life quite literally depends on whether blood is available in that moment.

The South African National Blood Service (SANBS) is calling on the nation to ‘Answer the Call’ on Saturday, 28 March, with an urgent goal of collecting 6,000 units of blood in a single day to sustain hospitals over the Easter period.

Behind every blood donation is a real life waiting to be saved.

For Lezhanne Hartwell, blood donors became the lifeline that helped save her young daughter’s life. Her 18-month-old baby girl was diagnosed with stage 4 Neuroblastoma in October 2020 and required a blood transfusion shortly after.

“I would like to thank all blood donors because of your generosity; you have contributed to saving our little girl’s life,” says Hartwell.

Her daughter received a 200ml blood transfusion at Donald Gordon Hospital, and the experience profoundly changed Hartwell’s perspective on blood donation. Despite being afraid of needles, she has since committed to donating blood regularly after realising how vital it can be for families facing medical emergencies.

Each unit of blood donated can save up to three lives, yet public holidays often place pressure on blood stocks as fewer donors visit collection sites.

SANBS is therefore encouraging both regular donors and first-time donors to take time this Saturday to help ensure that hospitals have the blood they need throughout the Easter period.

Young donors like Sibongeleni Hlongwane, a 23-year-old from Pietermaritzburg, are already answering that call.

Hlongwane began donating blood at the age of 17 while still in school and continues to donate as a way of giving back to society.

“Donating blood is a meaningful way to help others,” he says.

“I encourage more young people to get involved and participate in community blood drives.”

The donation process takes about 30 minutes, but the impact can last a lifetime. To participate, South Africans are encouraged to visit their nearest SANBS donor centre or mobile clinic on 28 March.

“Easter is a time associated with giving and renewal. By donating blood, South Africans can give a gift that lasts far beyond the holiday, the gift of life,” says Monique Schreiner, Senior Manager: Donor Relations at SANBS.

To find your nearest donor centre, call 0800 11 90 31 or visit www.sanbs.org.za.

This Easter, while baskets may be filled with chocolate, SANBS reminds South Africans that there is another gift that can mean even more. Your donation can be someone’s lifeline.

Easter is around the corner, and here’s how to make it extra sweet with these fun cheesecake-stuffed eggs for your guests or just to treat yourself over the long weekend.

South Africa (20 March 2026) – With Easter around the corner, it’s officially time to bring out the sweet treats, and this one is definitely a showstopper.

Content creator, Dawid Botha, known as Lekker Weskus on socials, has shared a fun and creative twist on a classic dessert, turning ordinary chocolate Easter eggs into bite-sized cheesecake delights. Think creamy and crunchy, just the right amount of indulgence for you over a long weekend.

Since it went live, the video has already racked up over 2,000 likes, with viewers flooding the comments saying they can’t wait to give it a go. People are even tagging their friends to make sure no one misses out on the fun.

The idea is simple.  A smooth cheesecake filling, vanilla essence and icing sugar is paired with a buttery biscuit base for that perfect crunch. Once your filling is ready, the magic happens. Chocolate Easter eggs are carefully cut open, layered with crushed biscuits at the bottom, and then filled with the creamy cheesecake mixture.

It’s the kind of recipe that doesn’t just taste good, but looks good too. Perfect for impressing friends and family or just treating yourself over the Easter weekend. And the best part is that it’s quick, fun, and doesn’t require anything too complicated in the kitchen.

So if you’re looking to switch things up this Easter, this cheesecake-filled egg treat might just be your new go to treat.

The Angel Network is once again setting out to make thousands of smiles happen over Easter!

South Africa (02 February 2026) – With just two months until the Easter bunny hops again, the organisation that makes magic happen for those in need plans to make the holiday special for 10,000 children who rarely get spoiled.

The Angel Network is a local community-driven non-profit that steps in wherever help is needed most. They’ve operated for a decade now, providing everything from food relief and disaster response to education support, shelter assistance and community upliftment. Working hand in hand with volunteers and donors, they essentially work as a bridge between people who want to help and communities that need it.

Last year, the network’s annual drive collected a whopping 12,000 eggs which made Easter memorable and special for orphaned, abandoned and vulnerable children across the country. The year before, a record number of 17,000 smiles benefited from the charitable tradition.

This year, The Angel Network is determined to collect at least 10,000 eggs!

“…We believe every child deserves a moment of magic, a moment that says you are seen, you matter, and joy belongs to you too. This Easter, our goal is to raise funds to gift 10,000 Easter eggs to children who rarely get treats,” the organisation shares.

In years past, the network has seen just how much joy one small gesture can bring, especially for children living in underprivileged communities.

“An Easter egg might seem simple but in a child’s hands it becomes hope, excitement, and pure delight. It becomes the feeling of being included. Together, we can make sure no child is left out of the celebration.”

If you’d like to support the cause, follow this link and use ‘Easter’ as your reference.

We know many South Africans are very excited to hit the road and make a getaway for the upcoming Easter weekend, but before you go, here are some safety tips to follow so you and the family stay safe on the roads.

South Africa (16 April 2025) – A family road trip is one of the best ways to explore the beauty and diversity of South Africa. From coastal drives to scenic mountain routes, the journey can be just as memorable as the destination. However, ensuring your vehicle is road-ready is crucial for a safe and enjoyable experience, especially considering the condition of some South African roads, where potholes and long stretches of remote terrain are common.

Second to the condition of the roads being terribly poor is the high number of road accidents occurring over the Easter weekend. It happens every year, and we just want every road user to get to their destination safely.

Here are key steps families should take before hitting the road this Easter Weekend.

1. Check Your Tyres Thoroughly

Tyres are your vehicle’s first line of defence. Before setting off, inspect all tyres—including the spare—for wear and tear. Ensure tread depth meets legal safety standards (at least 1.6mm, though 3mm is preferable for long trips), and that tyres are correctly inflated according to your vehicle’s manual. Uneven wear might indicate misalignment or suspension issues, which should be addressed before travel.

2. Check Your Oil and Water

Even if your vehicle isn’t due for a service, a minor check-up can make all the difference. Have a trusted mechanic inspect vital components such as oil levels, brake pads, wiper blades, battery health, lights, and coolant.

Top up fluids and replace any worn-out parts to reduce the risk of roadside breakdowns. A quick service now can save you hours of inconvenience later, especially over the Easter Weekend when most mechanics are likely to be closed.

3. Watch Out for Potholes

South Africa’s roads can be unpredictable, with potholes being a frequent hazard, particularly in rural areas and after heavy rains (although the same is now true for most urban areas too…).

Stay vigilant, especially on lesser-maintained routes or roads you are not familiar with. Stick to the speed limit, increase your following distance, and drive with dipped headlights in low visibility conditions.

If a pothole is unavoidable, avoid sudden braking and try to drive straight over it at a reduced speed to minimise damage.

Good luck!

4. Pack Smart and Stay Connected

Pack a basic emergency kit including a first aid box, jumper cables, a flashlight, and a tyre repair kit. Load maps or download offline navigation apps in case of poor cell reception. Make sure mobile phones are charged, and carry a power bank or car charger.

Also, keep some drinking water and filling snacks in the car, just in case you are stopped for a prolonged period of time and need to stay hydrated.

5. Plan Rest Stops and Entertainment

Long drives can be tiring for both adults and children. Plan rest stops every two to three hours and keep snacks, water, and activities for children within reach to keep the journey smooth.

Fun Games to Play While Driving

  • License Plate Game – Try to spot plates from all the provinces in South Africa and neighbouring countries.
  • I Spy – Classic game where someone says “I spy with my little eye, something…” and others guess.
  • Name That Tune – Play music and try to guess the song as fast as possible.
  • Car Bingo – This one takes a little bit of planning, but is a fun way to keep the family engaged and looking out for fun things on the roadside (hello, herd of cows – these always make the whole family smile!) – Just Google and you will find a load of free printables to use.

By taking these simple yet effective steps, your family can enjoy a safer, more relaxed adventure on South African roads. Happy travels, and stay safe!

With the Easter Holiday just around the corner, many South Africans will be missioning off on road trips near and far. No matter how long the journey, padkos is always essential. So, here are a few alternative padkos treat ideas to tuck into!

South Africa (17 March 2024) — Travels over the school holidays and Easter weekend bring the promise of adventure and exploration. The open road, the company, and, of course, padkos are all reasons that make the journey just as exciting as the destination.

As many an avid snacker knows, padkos is an essential element in any adventure that can make (or break!) a road trip. So, here are five alternative padkos treats to add to those biltong and coffee in a flask favourites, as recommended by the hospitality industry’s Wayne Blake:

1. Durban-Style Popcorn

Spicy pineapple – tangy fresh pineapple chunks doused in curry powder – is most definitely one of Durban’s most unique snacks, usually sold by street vendors along the beachfront. Make your own using a unique blend of spices and prepare a pre-mix of chilli powder, sugar, salt and a dash of vinegar and generously coat freshly popped popcorn. Make enough – it won’t last long!

2. Scotch Eggs South African Style

Portable and tasty as a cold snack, scotch eggs are filling and comfort food at its best (great for longer trips). Essentially, they are hard-boiled eggs wrapped in sausage meat, coated in bread crumbs and deep-fried for a delicious snack on the go. For a South African twist, substitute the pork mince for boerewors by simply removing the wors meat from the casting. Prepare a dipping sauce with mayonnaise and a dash of hot sauce or sweet chilli sauce, and you’re ready to rumble!

3. Roasted Butternut Toasted Pumpkin Seed & Danish Feta Salad

This scrumptious salad is a perfect roadside snack when you need to stretch your legs. Packed with roasted butternut, toasted pumpkin seeds, and Danish feta, it’s a flavourful treat that keeps you satisfied (and healthy) on the go. Add couscous, quinoa, chickpeas or bulgar wheat for additional sustenance. Pack it in glass mason jars and enjoy a fresh taste wherever your journey leads.

4. Falafels

Made from wholesome chickpeas, falafels are a road trip snack perfect for the vegetarians in the car. Their crispy exterior and flavoursome interior offer a satisfying crunch and bold taste. Whether eaten on their own or in a pita with chilli and coriander, humus or tzatziki, falafels are not to be left behind.

5. Chocolate Brownies

Trade chocolate bunnies for chocolate brownies as a heavenly mid-journey pick-me-up or a post-adventure reward. Wayne shares his fool-proof recipe which you can make a day ahead of your trip:
