A new astro hockey field at Hoërskool Overkruin is opening doors for young talent while bringing the school and wider community together.
Pretoria, South Africa (24 March 2026) – A brand-new astro hockey field is changing the game at Hoërskool Overkruin in Pretoria, opening up exciting opportunities for learners while bringing the wider community closer together.
The project, made possible through the support of Unite180 Church, marks a major step forward for the school’s sporting facilities. It all started with mere conversations. But now, those conversations have changed into something tangible.
For years, the school’s hockey teams had to make do with a grass field, often struggling during rainy periods when conditions made training and matches difficult. Competing with schools that already had astro facilities also proved challenging, limiting both performance and development.
That’s now a thing of the past. The new field offers a professional-standard space where learners can train and play throughout the year. Beyond hockey, it also creates room for fitness training, physical education, and other extracurricular activities.
Learners are eager to make the most of the upgraded space, while parents and staff have welcomed the investment in both sport and student development. There’s a renewed sense of pride across the school, with the astro field quickly becoming a central point of energy and activity.
It’s not just the school that benefits. The facility has already helped launch the Ratels Hockey Club, drawing in members from the surrounding community and creating a new platform for both junior and senior players to get involved in the sport. Plans are also in place to make the field available to nearby primary schools, helping grow hockey at grassroots level.
More than just a new surface to play on, the astro field represents a space where talent can develop and a community can come together around something positive.
