With rugby celebrations across the country, this milestone celebration brings together schoolboy rugby, tradition, and a deep sense of brotherhood that has defined Pretoria Boys High for generations.

Pretoria, South Africa (07 April 2026) – Pretoria Boys High School, one of the oldest schools in Pretoria, is celebrating 125 years of excellence this year. What better way to mark the milestone than with a rugby festival on the hallowed Brooks Field?

Across the country, rugby festivals have become a staple of the school calendar, bringing together some of the best young talent and fiercest rivalries. From one province to the next, they’re about tradition, connection, and a shared love for the game. And in Pretoria, Boys High’s contribution to that landscape carries a legacy of its own.

As the school celebrates 125 years of excellence, its rugby festival becomes more than just a weekend of fixtures. It’s a gathering of history, pride, and a brotherhood that stretches across generations.

For director of rugby Paul Anthony, the real significance lies beyond the touchline.

“I think it’s like a family. The school’s based on the old boys, it’s like a brotherhood. The guys just stick together and go on forever. It’s a massive bond.”

That sense of belonging is something he knows well. Anthony himself walked these fields as a learner in the mid-1970s before returning years later as a coach.

It’s a cycle that extends beyond him. Having coached some of the very figures who now lead the school, and with his own sons having come through the system, his connection to Pretoria Boys High runs deep.

“My sons were right here,” he says. “They’re now overseas, but they’ll be watching, and by four o’clock they’ll be telling me what we did right and wrong. That’s how invested they are.”

While the festival showcases high-level competition, Anthony is quick to emphasise that schoolboy rugby should be about more than just winning.

“People come for the rugby and the competition, but also to catch up with their mates. There’ll be a tent full tonight, just reminiscing. That’s what it’s about.”

As the school celebrates 125 years, Anthony is clear about the kind of legacy it hopes to leave behind.

“The legacy should be to send well-educated, well-mannered young men into the world,” he says. “Men who love this country and want to make a difference.”

More national records fall on the final day of the ASA Age Group Championships as South Africa’s young athletes continue to raise the bar.

Johannesburg, South Africa (30 March 2026) – The next generation of South African athletes is already making a serious impact on the track this season.

South Africa’s rising track and field talent once again stole the spotlight at the ASA Age Group Championships in Germiston, where the final day delivered yet another wave of record-breaking performances.

After an already impressive showing earlier in the competition, the closing day added three more national records to the tally.

One of the standout moments came from Matodzi Ndou, who produced a remarkable run in the U20 men’s 400m hurdles. Clocking 48.64 seconds, he not only secured gold but also edged past a long-standing national junior record previously held by one of his role models.

“It feels amazing because the record was held by one of the people who I look up to, Sokwakhana Zazini,” said Ndou. I had hoped to break the national record in the U18 division but I had some struggles, so coming into the U20 age group it feels good to have done this.”

In the U18 girls’ 400m hurdles, Megan Nieman delivered a strong response after an earlier setback in the week. She powered her way to victory in 56.64 seconds, shaving time off her own national record in the process.

“It was fun running with Christi (Loggenberg). She’s a very good athlete and I think we’re going to have a lot of good races in future,” Nieman said.

Field events also had their moment, with Ansume de Beer making a statement in the U20 women’s pole vault. Clearing 4.18m, she improved on her own African mark and showed no signs of slowing down despite recently returning from injury.

“This is my first time jumping since I recovered from an injury, so it’s a big relief that I could jump here and had so much fun,” said De Beer.

The championships also reflected the growing depth of talent across the country, with multiple athletes delivering top-level performances throughout the three days.

On the team front, Athletics Gauteng North dominated the overall standings, finishing comfortably ahead after collecting an impressive haul of medals.

All in all, it was the kind of meet that leaves one thinking, if this is what the next generation is doing now, what’s still to come?

A new astro hockey field at Hoërskool Overkruin is opening doors for young talent while bringing the school and wider community together.

Pretoria, South Africa (24 March 2026) – A brand-new astro hockey field is changing the game at Hoërskool Overkruin in Pretoria, opening up exciting opportunities for learners while bringing the wider community closer together.

The project, made possible through the support of Unite180 Church, marks a major step forward for the school’s sporting facilities. It all started with mere conversations. But now, those conversations have changed into something tangible.

For years, the school’s hockey teams had to make do with a grass field, often struggling during rainy periods when conditions made training and matches difficult. Competing with schools that already had astro facilities also proved challenging, limiting both performance and development.

That’s now a thing of the past. The new field offers a professional-standard space where learners can train and play throughout the year. Beyond hockey, it also creates room for fitness training, physical education, and other extracurricular activities.

Learners are eager to make the most of the upgraded space, while parents and staff have welcomed the investment in both sport and student development. There’s a renewed sense of pride across the school, with the astro field quickly becoming a central point of energy and activity.

It’s not just the school that benefits. The facility has already helped launch the Ratels Hockey Club, drawing in members from the surrounding community and creating a new platform for both junior and senior players to get involved in the sport. Plans are also in place to make the field available to nearby primary schools, helping grow hockey at grassroots level.

More than just a new surface to play on, the astro field represents a space where talent can develop and a community can come together around something positive.

A world-leading 400m performance in Johannesburg saw Lythe Pillay surge to victory, continuing South Africa’s strong run in athletics.

Johannesburg, South Africa (17 March 2026)-  It feels like local athletes are setting the tone early in the year, and Lythe Pillay has just added his name to that growing list in style.

The 23-year-old lit up the track at the CGA Championships in Johannesburg, storming to victory in the 400m and clocking an incredible 44.32 seconds. Making this the fastest time in the world so far this year.

It’s a performance that comes at a time when South African athletics is riding a wave of momentum. Just days after Adriaan Wildschutt made headlines with his New York Half-Marathon triumph, Pillay’s run added even more excitement.

And for Pillay, this is only the beginning.

“I do feel like I was robbed of the time to really see what I can do last year [due to injury], but I am truly blessed and grateful I was able to tie things up at the World Champs in the relay.”

Having already played a key role in South Africa’s relay success on the global stage, Pillay is no stranger to performing under pressure. But as his career evolves, so too has his role within the sport. South Africa has been here before with Wayde van Niekerk rewriting the record books and at this rate, if that record ever falls, don’t be surprised if it’s another South African doing the damage.

“I wouldn’t necessarily say that the more dividing the limelight between us [Van Niekerk] has made the pressure easier, but I have had a shift in perspective.”

Pillay explained that his place in the sport has evolved over time.

“I think I’ve become more of a middle child now, and I am almost an ‘old topi’.”

While the pressure hasn’t necessarily increased, Pillay admitted that his mindset has had to change in order to handle it, noting that he has adjusted both his approach and perspective as he continues to grow in the sport.

“I’m also being chased. I wouldn’t say the pressure has changed, but I think I’ve had to change my approach and my perspective on the sport to navigate through the pressure.”

With big events on the horizon, including the upcoming World Relays and a chance at individual success later in the year, Pillay’s early-season form hints at the impact he’s set to make in the months to come.

Athletics South Africa selects a blend of youth and experience to compete in track and field events at the 2026 World Athletics Indoor Championships

South Africa (16 March 2026) – The countdown is on as eight of South Africa’s finest track and field athletes get ready to take on the world at the 2026 World Athletics Indoor Championships in Poland.

Athletics South Africa has confirmed an eight-member squad that will represent the country at the global showpiece taking place from 20 to 22 March in Kujawy Pomorze, Poland. The team features seven men and one woman, competing across a range of track and field events.

Among the names generating excitement is Olympic silver medallist Luvo Manyonga, who returns to the world indoor stage in the long jump. Luvo previously claimed silver at the 2018 indoor championships and will once again be aiming to soar onto the podium.

Joining him in the sandpit is promising 19-year-old long jumper Temoso Masikane. The youngster has been making waves this season, with both athletes recording jumps of 8.11 metres.

On the track, Karabo Letebele will take on the men’s 60m sprint. The 19-year-old, currently based in the United States, recently clocked an impressive indoor personal best of 6.53 seconds in Texas.

Middle-distance runner Luan Munnik will line up in the 3 000m after producing a strong personal best of 7:38.35 in France last month, showing that he is ready to compete among the world’s best.

The hurdles events will feature two South Africans, with Franco le Roux and Mondray Barnard both competing in the men’s 60m hurdles.

In the throwing circle, Aiden Smith will represent the country in the men’s shot put after consistently throwing beyond the 20.30 metre mark this year.

Miné de Klerk, arrives in excellent form. The national record holder and African Championships silver medallist recently set a new South African indoor mark of 18.48 metres at a collegiate meeting in Indiana.

From sprinters setting personal bests in the US to long jumpers leaping past 8 metres, each member of Team South Africa carries their own flair and experience. And as they head to Poland, the nation cheers them on and hoping their talent turns into medals.

The first World Athletics Continental Tour Silver meeting in South Africa promises thrilling competition and a platform for young talent.

Johannesburg, South Africa (09 March 2026) – When talking about the inaugural Simbine Classic, Akani Simbine is quick to make it clear that the event is not about him. Instead, the South African sprint star says the goal is to create a world-class athletics platform on the continent that inspires the next generation while showcasing African talent to the world.

The Simbine Classic, set to take place at Pilditch Stadium in Pretoria on 28 April, will be the first World Athletics Continental Tour Silver meeting hosted in South Africa. For Simbine, this builds on the success of the Simbine Classic Shootout. Now, the concept has grown into something far bigger. It is filling a gap that has long existed in the local athletics calendar.

“There was a gap of a competition, and I felt it was important to fill that gap.”

Simbine believes bringing this level of competition to Africa can play a powerful role in inspiring the next generation.

“If we have it in Africa, it can inspire the next generation because I know what it’s like to grow up as a sprinter here.”

For the Olympian, the long-term vision is to see the meet grow into a permanent fixture on the global athletics calendar while also helping develop the sport locally.

While fans might expect a sprinter like Simbine to highlight the 100m as the main attraction, choosing a favourite event from the programme is nearly impossible.

“All of them,” he laughed when asked which event he was most excited to watch.

Off the track, that commitment to development continues through the Akani Simbine Foundation. The foundation currently supports around 40 young athletes, focusing not only on their sporting progress but also their education and long-term opportunities.

“We’re not just training them to be athletes. We’re trying to give them opportunities so that one day they can get an education, a qualification and be able to build a life for themselves.”

The impact of Simbine’s presence in the sport has also been felt by younger athletes coming through the ranks.

World Championships bronze medallist Lythe Pillay, who was part of South Africa’s men’s 4x400m relay team alongside Udeme Okon, Wayde van Niekerk and Zakithi Nene, said Simbine has been someone many athletes look up to while navigating the pressures of elite competition.

“For many of us athletes, we hope to follow that example and one day give back to the sport as well.”

The spotlight now turns to the event, promising an exciting meet across multiple events.

With the launch behind us and the meet ahead, Pretoria is about to witness an evening of world-class athletics.

The Hoërskool Menlopark athlete throws 60.78m at the ACNW League in Potchefstroom, breaking the previous global benchmark and qualifying for the World U20 Championships in Eugene.

Potchefstroom, South Africa (06 March 2026) – South African athletics continues to produce remarkable young talent, and 16-year-old Joshua Gerber from Die Hoërskool Menlopark has once again shown why he is one of the country’s most exciting prospects in the throwing events.

Competing at the ACNW League meeting in Potchefstroom, the teenager delivered a record-breaking performance that has placed his name firmly in the global athletics conversation. Joshua launched the 1.75kg discus an incredible 60.78 metres, setting a new world record for a 16-year-old athlete.

The throw surpassed the previous record of 59.92 metres, which had been held by Jamaica’s Ralford Mullings since 2019, beating it by nearly a full metre.

This historic moment adds to a growing list of achievements at a very young age. Despite still being only 16, he has been competing in the under-20 age category. And the latest milestone also marks his second world record.

Back in 2024, Joshua impressed the athletics world with a 47.02-metre throw using a 1.75kg discus. His performance has also secured him qualification for the World Under-20 Championships in Eugene, USA, where he will have the opportunity to test himself against some of the best young athletes from around the world.

After a standout display against Pakistan, Annerie Dercksen looks ahead to the final ODI with World Cup qualification points and a powerful cause at stake.

Durban, South Africa (01 March 2026) – Annerie Dercksen has described her recent Player of the Match performance against Pakistan Women as a rewarding opportunity to contribute meaningfully to the team, as the Proteas Women prepare for their final one-day international this weekend.

The all-rounder played a key role in South Africa’s victory earlier this week when the Proteas confirmed yet another series win by nine wickets.

“I would say by far one of my best performances. I was fortunate to take up some wickets and contribute to the team.”

Her quick-fire burst, including 24 runs in a decisive passage, helped steer the game South Africa’s way. However, she explained that it was all part of the team’s plan.

“We know the power that we have… I saw if we set it up for the end there, the team would ensure that we get to a big total.”

Beyond the performance itself, last week carried personal meaning for her as the Proteas Women returned to Bloemfontein. A city that played an important role in her cricket journey.

“That’s where I played my first Division One cricket game for the provincial side. It was very special to be back there.”

From playing cricket in the backyard with her brother to representing her country, Annerie still holds onto that childlike joy for the game.

“Very much familiar. I still feel like a little kid in the back yard. Still playing for the fun of it and the love of the game.”

Now, attention shifts to today’s third and final ODI in Durban, which will also be marked as Black Day to raise awareness around gender-based violence in South Africa.

“It’s not just an international game, but also more special because of the meaning behind it… hopefully we can create some awareness and get people into the stands.”

With World Cup qualification points on the line, the Proteas are determined to finish the series on a high.

“Every game we play counts. We have to make sure that we don’t lose any points there and get as many as we can.”

The third and final ODI is scheduled to get underway at 10 am in Durban on Sunday.

21-year-old Jordan Boshoff and teammate Travis Rademan-Ludeke tackle the world’s toughest stage race with Project Dream SA, aiming to turn local talent into global champions.

Stellenbosch, South Africa (24 February 2026) – “Turning champions into world champions.”

That is the mission behind Project Dream SA, and for 21-year-old Jordan Boshoff, it is far more than a slogan. For this team, it’s an everyday pursuit.

Fresh off a morning training ride of 91km with 1,200 metres of climbing, Jordan admits the work never really stops.

The internationally renowned Absa Cape Epic is widely regarded as one of the toughest stage races in the world. Spanning 603km over eight brutal days, it tests endurance, resilience and mental strength. Standing on that start line for the first time was surreal.

“This is the peak of the peak. There’s media everywhere, helicopters flying overhead, thousands of fans. And just to be in the broadcast is phenomenal. There are only about 50 teams in the world that make it.”

Together with his teammate Travis Rademan-Ludeke, Jordan became part of what is believed to be one of the youngest teams to compete in the pro category. At just 20 and 18 at the time, their approach was to finish safely, learn, and grow.

“The guys winning it have been training for 10 years, some of them have done six or seven Epics. For us, it was about getting through every day and learning as much as we could.”

But surviving the Epic is not just about fitness. The heat, the relentless climbing, and even something as basic as eating become challenges.

“After five or six days of racing, you don’t want to eat. You have to force yourself.”

From oats to flapjacks to pancakes, Jordan had to constantly adjust just to fuel his body. Yet if there is one thing he emphasises most, it is partnership.

“You can be the strongest guy in the world, but if your partner doesn’t understand you, you won’t click. First become friends. Train together. Motivate each other. Some days you only have 90 percent and that must be enough.”

That friendship and shared belief are central to Project Dream SA’s bigger ambition, and that’s winning a world championship.

“If you wear that jersey, you are number one in the world. That’s the pinnacle.”

With their main focus set firmly on the upcoming Cape Epic, going from 15-22 March, Jordan and his partner are chasing experience and excellence. They are also building a a standard for young South African cyclists daring to dream beyond borders.

Project Dream SA’s journey to becoming a world champion has already begun.

Rumé Burger sprints to a world-leading 150m as the 2026 Simbine Classic Shootout kicks off in Pretoria, showcasing talent in South Africa and beyond.

Pretoria, South Africa (11 February 2026) – South African athletics fans were treated to an electric early-season showcase as the 14th edition of the USN Simbine Classic Shootout delivered fast times, breakout performances and serious excitement at Hoërskool Menlopark in Pretoria on Friday, 6 February.

The exhibition meeting once again proved why it has become a key marker on the local athletics calendar, bringing together top sprinters and middle-distance runners from South Africa, Botswana and beyond to test their speed and sharpen their form ahead of the season.

One of the standout performances came from 16-year-old Tiisetso Malungane, who continues to announce himself as one of the country’s most exciting middle-distance prospects. Representing Curro Hazeldean, Tiisetso stormed to victory in the boys’ 800m in 1:48.26, finishing just 0.59 seconds outside the long-standing South African U18 record of 1:47.67.

Speed was also the order of the day in the sprints, with Oranjé’s Rumé Burger producing a moment to remember in the 150m. Competing just a day before her 18th birthday, Rumè powered home in 16.95 seconds, setting a leading time for 2026 and establishing a new South African record for the distance.

There were also strong showings across other distances, including a commanding 1000m victory in 2:39.72 by Karabo More, adding to the growing list of impressive performances from the meeting.

And the action is far from over. This weekend, the spotlight shifts to the Simbine Curro Classic Shootout: Curro Podium Grand Finale, a two-day spectacle that is expected to build on the momentum created in Pretoria.
