One of South Africa’s most iconic drives has just been ranked number one in the world, putting it ahead of some of the planet’s most famous routes.

Garden Route, South Africa (04 April 2026) – You don’t need a passport stamp to experience one of the greatest road trips on Earth. You just need a good playlist, a sense of adventure and a stretch of road that South Africans have been bragging about for years.

And now, the rest of the world knows about it too.

In a new global study by Autotrader, in partnership with senior meteorologist Jim R N Dale, South Africa’s Garden Route has officially been ranked the best road trip in the world for driving conditions.

The research set out to understand what really makes a road trip feel effortless and enjoyable behind the wheel. Dale pointed out that visibility is the most important factor when it comes to ideal driving conditions, and from there, the study looked at five key elements: road surface conditions, clear days, wind speed, ground temperature and humidity comfort. All of these were combined into a “Perfect Driving Weather” score.

The Garden Route didn’t just perform well across those categories. It delivered a near-perfect score of 90.6 out of 100, placing it firmly at the top of the global rankings.

Running roughly 300 kilometres from Mossel Bay to Storms River, this iconic stretch offers more than just scenery. It’s a drive where everything seems to align. Clear skies that open up the horizon, gentle winds that don’t interrupt the journey and temperatures that make you want to keep going just a little bit further. Along the way, the Indian Ocean glimmers beside you, forests close in with that deep green calm, and mountain passes add just enough drama to keep things interesting.

Trailing just behind South Africa are some of the world’s most famous routes. Route 66 in the United States takes second place, followed by the Pacific Coast Highway. Both are known for their long, open stretches and reliable sunshine, while destinations like Italy’s Amalfi Coast, Spain’s Costa Brava and Australia’s Great Ocean Road also feature in the top ten.

  1. Garden Route – South Africa
  2. Route 66 – United States
  3. Pacific Coast Highway – United States
  4. Amalfi Coast Road – Italy
  5. Costa Brava Coastal Roads – Spain
  6. Great Ocean Road – Australia
  7. Icefields Parkway – Canada
  8. Loire Valley Drives – France
  9. Kahekili Highway – United States
  10. Norwegian Atlantic Road – Norway

But even among those globally celebrated drives, the Garden Route was number 1 for a reason.

Erin Baker from Autotrader captured the magic of it perfectly, “Every driver knows the feeling: windows down, the road stretching out under a clear sky, conditions so perfect you could stay behind the wheel all day.”

“We wanted to find out which of the world’s great roads most often deliver this experience and were pleasantly surprised by just how many countries across the globe have roads that scored highly in our Perfect Driving Weather index.”

“Whether you’re planning a once-in-a-lifetime trip along the Garden Route or a weekend loop somewhere closer to home, the right conditions and the right car can turn a good drive into an unforgettable one.”

But South Africans knew this already. This isn’t a hidden gem or a place you need to discover. It’s a route that families have travelled for generations, where friends have made memories on long weekends and where solo trips have turned into something meaningful along the way.

So the next time you find yourself on that road, windows open, music playing, taking in the coastline and everything that comes with it, remember this: you’re not just on a good drive… you’re on the best one in the world.

Pardon the heat in Cape Town. The Mother City’s blushing because she’s the most beautiful city in the world…

Cape Town, South Africa (13 March 2026) — South Africa’s golden city is back in the global ranks again, this time landing sixth place on Time Out’s list of the 50 best cities in the world for 2026!

The annual ranking, released by Time Out Worldwide, celebrates cities that offer exciting place to visit and a great place to live. This year’s list drew on insights from more than 24,000 locals across 150 cities, alongside votes from over 100 Time Out city experts.

Locals were asked what they love about their cities and how it actually feels to live there. From food and culture to happiness, affordability and quality of life, Cape Town keeps ticking all the boxes!

“This city has it all: pristine beaches, character-filled neighbourhoods and genuinely friendly locals, from the city centre flower sellers and the fishermen hauling in the daily catch in Kalk Bay to the creative excellence of its hospitality entrepreneurs. All of this plays out beneath Table Mountain, framed by the extraordinary Cape Floral Kingdom and the Cape Winelands,” shares Time Out.

The numbers behind the ranking made us smile even more.

Of all 150 cities surveyed, Cape Town locals were the most likely – more than anywhere else in the world – to call their city beautiful. 86% of Capetonians said so. The highest percentage on the entire list. That’s not a travel writer’s opinion, but the people who live here, in traffic, paying rent, on a Tuesday.

There’s also a lot happening in the city. Time Out gives a nod to Cape Town’s tourism reinvention boom, with mention of the world-renowned Montreux Jazz Festival which make its debut in nearby Franschhoek later this month. Meanwhile, major hospitality developments including a new Marriott hotel planned for the V&A Waterfront turns heads internationally.

It’s also been quite a week for South Africa on the global stage. Three South African destinations – Masiya’s Camp at Royal Malewane, Park Hyatt Johannesburg, and Amura in Cape Town – just made TIME Magazine’s World’s Greatest Places list. The Mother City’s Labia Theatre also landed on Time Out’s list of the world’s 100 greatest cinemas!

Three South African destinations just made one of the most prestigious travel lists!

South Africa (13 March 2026) – Every year, one of the world’s greatest titles – TIME Magazine – releases a list of The World’s Greatest Places. The list is split in two: places to stay, and places to visit.

And this year, South Africa appeared on the list three times, and in both categories!

“Each year, TIME solicits nominations of places – including hotels, cruises, restaurants, attractions, museums, parks, and more – from its international network of correspondents and contributors, as well as through an application process, with an eye toward those offering new, exciting, and relevant experiences.”

Two local gems made the list of Places to Stay: Masiya’s Camp at Royal Malewane in Kruger National Park and Park Hyatt in Johannesburg!

Masiya’s Camp in the Kruger earns the accolade for its stunning interior design that flips the cliche of a ‘khaki safari’ totally on its head. The camp’s six-suite hot-pink tents and jewel-toned furnishings get the nod. Plus, of course, world-class game drives and sundowners in the bush.

“The candy-colored canvas at the new six-suite Masiya’s Camp at Royal Malewane, just outside Kruger National Park, is the brainchild of owner Liz Biden, whose fearless sensibility has made her Royal Portfolio properties cult favorites among design lovers.”

Then there’s SA’s first Park Hyatt in Rosebank. The luxury hotel opened its doors last year and is already scooping international acclaim. TIME praises it for bringing boutique luxury to the city with a rare level of service, stunning locally-inspired interior design and a restaurant that serves a ‘treasure chest’ for high tea, and a dinner perhaps worth extending that layover for.

“Johannesburg has long been a destination for business travellers – and a common layover for leisure visitors en route to safari. With the opening of Park Hyatt Johannesburg, however, travelers may finally have more reason to linger.”

Hot on the heels of its recognition at the 2026 Luxe Restaurant Awards, the Mother City’s Amura has also earned its flowers in Best Places to Visit. The restaurant, headed by world-renowned Andalusian chef Ángel León, opened at Mount Nellie in December last year.

“The Andalusian chef – who went on to create a three-Michelin-star temple to the sea in Puerto de Santa María – has now crossed to the South Atlantic for his first project outside Spain.” TIME shares. “Here, a new continent becomes his canvas.”

Three incredible spots across three of our country’s most popular destinations – the bush, the city, and the coast – each celebrated for showing the world why South Africa is so worth the trip!

Travel creator shares highlights from her South African adventure, from exploring Cape Town and the Garden Route to spotting wildlife on a self-drive safari.

South Africa (13 March 2026) – Sometimes the best travel moments are the ones you never expected.

For travel content creator Kara Wildbur, known online as Okay Kara Travels, a recent trip through South Africa turned into exactly that. A journey filled with surprising discoveries, unforgettable wildlife encounters and a growing appreciation for the country’s landscapes.

Over the past few months, Kara has been sharing glimpses of her South African adventure with her followers, from exploring Cape Town to driving the scenic Garden Route.

Along the way, she even managed to squeeze in a quick stop in Johannesburg, turning a seven-hour layover into a mini city adventure.

But one of the biggest highlights of her trip came during a visit to Addo Elephant National Park.

In a video shared with her followers, Kara couldn’t contain her excitement after spending the day exploring the park, especially after realising that visitors can experience a safari in a slightly different way. By driving their own vehicles through the park, creating a self-guided wildlife experience.

“I’ve posted a bunch of videos about this experience already because it was seriously just the BEST day,” she told her followers.

It’s the simple joy visitors feel when they realise just how many adventures are waiting around the next corner that might make one want to discover more in their own backyard.

The South African Radio Astronomy Observatory is training residents to be star guides.

Northern Cape, South Africa (12 March 2026) – The small Karoo town of Carnarvon is a haven for stargazers. Located in a sparsely populated corner of the Northern Cape with minimal light pollution, it is perfectly located for viewing pristine night skies.

Locals are hoping that astrotourism will create sustainable jobs in an area struggling with high unemployment.

Astrotourism
Astro guide Amy-Lee Visagie hosts a star gazing evening with students from a local primary school, teaching youngsters about the cosmos in combination with indigenous mythology.

A unique selling point for Carnarvon’s stargazing experience is how guides combine modern astronomy with indigenous knowledge and storytelling from the San.

Information about the rings around Saturn and the size of Jupiter, for instance, is relayed along with mythology and the story of how the Milky Way was created by a young girl who threw ashes up into the night sky.

Amy-Lee Visagie, one of six residents trained as professional astro guides by the South African Radio Astronomy Observatory (SARAO), encourages her tour group to sit in silence for a minute and just gaze at the night sky to fully take in the awesomeness of the universe.

The Milky Way is clearly visible with thousands of stars, and yet it is a mere fraction of the 100-billion odd stars in our galaxy.

The KAT-7 radio telescope were some of the first dishes built on the site to test the viability for the larger SKA project.

Just over an hour’s drive from Carnarvon is the Meerkat National Park, which serves as the host area for the Square Kilometre Array (SKA), one of the world’s largest radio telescope installations.

Construction is ongoing, with some of the telescopes coming online early this year. When completed, the telescope will comprise 197 dishes, including the integration of the existing MeerKAT radio telescope built and operated by SARAO.

The project will enable astronomers to monitor the sky in unprecedented detail and survey the entire sky thousands of times faster than any system currently in existence, unlocking more stories and mysteries of the universe.

When complete, the telescope will comprise 197 dishes, including the integration of the existing MeerKAT radio telescope built and operated by the South African Radio Astronomy Observatory

The Mother City keeps flying the rainbow flag high!

Cape Town, South Africa (09 March 2026) – Cape Town has just been named Best LGBTQ+ City Destination at the 2026 SPARTACUS Travel Awards in Berlin!

It’s one of the most influential honours in LGBTQ+ travel, held annually alongside the ITB Berlin travel trade show. The awards, presented by the publishers of the SPARTACUS Gay Travel Index, recognise worldwide destinations known to promote equality, diversity, and inclusive travel.

Cape Town Tourism’s Chief Marketing Officer, Briony Brookes, accepted the award at the ceremony in Germany’s capital city.

“Cape Town is a city where people can genuinely be themselves. From our vibrant queer community and inclusive spaces to the excitement of our neighbourhoods, beaches, and nightlife, this award honours the spirit of openness that locals and visitors experience here every day.” said Brookes.

It’s a title the Mother City has been earning for years. South Africa was the first country in Africa to enshrine protections for sexual orientation in its Constitution, and Cape Town has long been flying the rainbow flag.

Last year, over a million travellers surveyed by Big 7 Travel ranked Cape Town among the most LGBTQ+ friendly cities in the world!

De Waterkant is the city’s LGBTQ+ hub with gay-owned bars, cafes, shops and gyms, the iconic rainbow pedestrian crossing on Somerset Road, and a Pink Route that guides visitors through the area’s proud queer culture!

This year, Cape Town Pride filled the city’s calendar and ended off with a bang, with Mardi Gras, said to have been the biggest pride event the city has ever seen!

The award comes hot on the heels of the announcement that in 2028, Cape Town will host WorldPride! The celebration brings together millions of people from across the world for a weeks-long programme of Pride marches, events, human rights conferences, and community gatherings. It will be the first time WorldPride has ever been held in Africa.

“This is a proud achievement for Cape Town and a powerful reminder of what makes our city special – diversity, openness, and a spirit of inclusion. As we prepare to host WorldPride 2028, it is more vital than ever that we continue creating a destination where LGBTQ+ travellers feel celebrated, safe, and inspired to explore all that Cape Town has to offer.” says Mayoral Committee Member for Economic Growth and Tourism, James Vos.

A new global study ranking the best cities to raise a family in 2026 has placed Johannesburg first among South African cities, with Cape Town and Durban also making the international top 50.

Global (08 March 2026) – There are an estimated 15,000 cities around the world, each one filled with families raising kids, building communities and trying to create meaningful lives. So when a global study narrows that down to just 50 cities worth highlighting, it becomes something worth talking about… especially when 3 South African cities make the list.

A new study by Compare the Market AU ranked cities around the world to determine the best places to raise a family in 2026, using 9 key data points that include safety, happiness, cost of living, family benefits, green spaces, vaccination rates and education investment.

Cities like Brisbane, London, Auckland, Helsinki and Sydney claimed the top 5 spots, but further down the list, among some of the biggest global metros, were 3 familiar names: Johannesburg, Cape Town and Durban.

They ranked 41st, 46th and 49th, respectively.

Now, that might not sound like a headline victory. But when you consider that the world has thousands of cities competing for that recognition, simply landing inside the top 50 is something worth celebrating. And perhaps more importantly, the rankings remind us of something locals already know… raising a family in South Africa comes with a lifestyle that many parts of the world can only dream about.

Johannesburg Leads the Local Rankings

Johannesburg ranked highest among South African cities, at number 41, with an overall index score of 3.307.

The city’s score reflects a combination of lifestyle indicators that matter to families. There are 126 activities for children, access to green spaces, and strong national investment in education, with South Africa allocating around 6% of GDP to education, one of the highest proportions in the global comparison.

But numbers only tell part of the story. Growing up in Johannesburg means things like visiting Gold Reef City, exploring museums and science centres, or spending weekends discovering markets, parks and local adventures.

And then there’s the bigger playground that exists just beyond the city limits… within a few hours’ drive, families can stand on the edge of the Blyde River Canyon, one of the largest canyons on Earth, or travel along the Panorama Route, a scenic stretch of Mpumalanga famous for waterfalls, forests and incredible viewpoints, or visit Kruger National Park! Those are childhood memories that stay with you forever.

Cape Town Brings the Natural Wonder

Cape Town ranked 46th globally, with an index score of 3.180, and anyone who has spent time there knows exactly why it would appear on a list like this.

The city scored highly for lifestyle factors, including 275 things to do with kids, and offers something few places on Earth can compete with… daily access to nature that feels almost cinematic.

Families can hike up Lion’s Head or spend weekends exploring beaches and tidal pools along the Cape Peninsula. Table Mountain alone attracts visitors from around the world who hike or ride the cableway to its flat summit overlooking the city. Kids growing up there might spend one weekend visiting the penguins at Boulders Beach, one of the only places where African penguins can be seen up close in the wild, and the next exploring colourful neighbourhoods like Bo-Kaap or wandering the V&A Waterfront. And of course, wine farms, mountain trails and ocean sunsets are simply part of everyday life.

Durban’s Coastal Childhood

Durban rounded out the South African trio in 49th place, with an index score of 2.752, supported by a lower cost of living and a lifestyle centred around the ocean.

For many families, Durban childhoods look like surf lessons, beach walks and long summer evenings along the Golden Mile. And when the adventure bug really bites, families can head inland to the Drakensberg, where mountains like Giant’s Castle and the surrounding nature reserves offer hiking, wildlife and ancient rock art experiences that feel worlds away from city life.

Interestingly, many of the experiences that make South Africa such a wonderful place to grow up appear on our “100 Things to Do in South Africa” list.

Things like visiting the Wilds, spotting Whales in Hermanus, or walking across the Bloukrans Bridge are not just bucket-list adventures for travellers… they are experiences that families here can actually access. And that’s something incredibly powerful. While global rankings measure statistics like safety scores and cost of living, they cannot capture community spirit, family braais, or road trips that turn into lifelong memories.

3 South African cities appearing in a global top-50 list is not about claiming perfection. We all know the challenges our cities face but it does highlight something many of us forget when the headlines get heavy: South Africa remains a country filled with extraordinary places, incredible people and experiences that are rich with culture, nature and adventure.

And that feels like a pretty good reminder that there is still so much good worth celebrating about raising a family in South Africa.

After travelling across South Africa, content creators Josh and Ruthie Betts share the coastal hideaways, natural wonders and bush escapes they simply can’t stop thinking about.

South Africa (04 March 2026) – When you’ve travelled across South Africa as much as Josh and Ruthie Betts have, it takes something special to linger in your memory. But in their latest reel, the content-creating couple admit that no matter how many places they tick off their list, a few destinations keep calling them back.

First on their list is Sardinia Bay, just outside Gqeberha. Known for its unspoilt shoreline, dramatic dunes and wide-open ocean views, it’s the kind of beach that feels untouched and peaceful. While many travellers automatically think of Durban or Cape Town for coastal getaways, Sardinia Bay offers something quieter.

Then there’s the geological masterpiece that is Bourke’s Luck Potholes in Graskop. Beautiful natural sculptures that are part science, part art but incredibly mind blowing.

For more coastal magic, the pair highlight Gericke’s Point in Sedgefield. With its rugged rock formations, this is a dream for slow explorers.

And when it’s time to swap sea for some bushveld calm, Summerplace Game Reserve near Vaalwater delivers. Nestled in the Waterberg region, this reserve offers classic safari landscapes.

From wild coastlines to ancient rock formations and peaceful bush escapes, Josh and Ruthie’s picks are a reminder of South Africa’s hidden gems.

This is arguably proof that the next place you fall in love with might not be the loudest, but just the most unexpected.

After exploring the scenery, oceans, and wildlife, The Lovers Passport declared South Africa a travel highlight of the year, and it was so unforgettable, they’re bringing a group back later in 2026.

South Africa (02 March 2026) – California adventure travel bloggers Giselle and Stephen, the faces behind The Lovers Passport, have seen the world, but nothing prepared them for South Africa. In a viral video that has racked up over 200,000 views, the couple couldn’t hide their awe as they explored Cape Town’s stunning landscapes.

Jaws were dropped as they captured breathtaking glimpses of oceans, wildlife, hiking trails, and serene escapes that made them declare: South Africa ruined every other country for them, in the best way possible.

And who can blame them? South Africa is full of jaw-dropping spots that consistently earn global recognition. Take Boulders Beach, one of the country’s most iconic beaches, which has claimed top positions across multiple categories in the Traveller’s Choice Awards Best of the Best. Or Durban, recently ranked 14th on Time Out’s newly released list of the best places to travel in 2026. With destinations like these, it’s no wonder South Africa keeps leaving visitors absolutely speechless.

Reflecting on their trip, the duo shared that South Africa was one of their favourite destinations of the previous year. So much so that they’ve already planned another trip later this year, promising activities like Big Five safaris, sunset game drives, wine tasting, snorkeling, and more.

Their video and stories have sparked excitement online, with viewers flooding the comments, all wanting to experience this themselves.

Giselle and Stephen hope to share the beauty of South Africa and the experience of adventure, nature, and unforgettable memories.

Big travel news for South Africans with UK travel plans…Visas have officially gone digital!

South Africa (25 February 2026) – From today onwards, South Africans applying for UK visas will start receiving their permissions as a secure digital record called an eVisa, which replaces ink stamps and stickers in passports.

It’s part of a wider move by UK Visas and Immigration to modernise the system and phase out physical immigration documents altogether.

An eVisa is essentially your immigration status stored safely online. It confirms who you are, what type of visa you hold and what you’re allowed to do while you’re in the UK – whether that’s visiting family, studying, or working.

It’s an exciting shift because now, there’s nothing to lose, damage or forget at home! Everything will live in a secure UKVI account that travellers can access to view their eVisas.

This will also make processes faster. Travellers won’t need to wait for physical documents to be issued or collected after approval. Border checks are expected to be smoother, and sharing proof of status (for things like renting accommodation or starting a job) becomes much quicker through a simple digital code that can be shared.

Importantly, this isn’t a change to immigration rules, only how permission is recorded. A visa is still a visa. The difference is that instead of living on paper, it now lives online.

The rollout is happening gradually – within this year, most successful applicants will receive only an eVisa rather than a physical visa sticker or stamp.

It’s one less layer of admin and a step toward easier travel for South Africans planning UK adventures!
