Sello, who carried his injured dog 15km to save her life, now has some stability, and Option is bouncing around happily on three legs!

Free State, South Africa (7 April 2026)Their story showed us all what love between a man and his best friend looks like. In October last year, Sello walked 15 kilometres, with Option wrapped up in his arms, to meet the team from Virginia SPCA on the road outside Odendaalsrus.

Option had been struck by a speeding car. With his last few rand spent on airtime, Sello made the call to save her. After being turned away by other shelters and organisations who had no capacity to help, the Virginia SPCA finally answered. They met him on the road, and took Option in.

The story blew up across South Africa. Support and donations poured in. Weeks later, Sello visited Option at the SPCA with tears in his eyes. That reunion moved thousands more. We were all crying snot en trane.

It’s almost six months since that moment happened. This week, the SPCA shared that Sello and his beloved Option paid them a visit, and they’re doing well. The picture (and video in the comments section linked here) are everything.

Photo Credit: Virginia SPCA, Free State, South Africa

Option has made a full recovery. She lost a leg in the accident, but this little three-legged doggie doesn’t seem to have gotten the memo that life is supposed to be harder. She’s doing just fine. Sello is doing well, too. A previous update shared that he is employed through to the end of May – stability makes all the difference for a man who gives everything he has to the ones he loves.

The Virginia SPCA playfully asked the public to guess who the two mystery guests in their post were. Hundreds of people, who never forgot their names or their story, flooded in with warmth and recognition.

“We could never forget Sello and little Option.”

“Two champions!”

“Brave Option with his hero Sello.”

“Sello and Option attached by special love chain”

“Even Hollywood could not dream up such an incredible story of love, resilience and compassion.”

Before he even brought a kitten of his own home, Mohlaudi made a promise to be the best ‘cat dad’ possible – and last week, that very dedication saved a life!

Free State, South Africa (27 March 2026) – When a young boy named Mohlaudi first joined us at Cluny Animal Trust’s regular Tuesday Dip Day in Kgubetswana, Clarens, he didn’t attend or participate as a pet owner, or even have a pet of his own yet. But his curiosity was contagious, and he spent many weeks chatting with Nico, eager to learn everything about responsible cat ownership.

“So, when he finally arrived a few months later with his adorable kitten, Lunah, we weren’t at all surprised,” shares Cluny Animal Trust.

Mohlaudi immediately applied all the knowledge he had gained and made sure Lunah was fully vaccinated. By six months, he had her sterilised – showing what a dedicated and caring pet owner he truly was.

Last week, however, a very worried Mohlaudi rushed Lunah to the animal welfare team, noticing some troubling signs.

“She wasn’t eating, was vomiting badly, had diarrhoea, and was dangerously dehydrated and weak. Dr Elsa suspected a viral infection, although the exact cause was unclear. Lunah was immediately given intravenous fluids, antibiotics, and supportive care to ease her nausea.”

The organisation admits that those 48 hours were touch and go. But the team refused to give up on the special little kitten that was so deeply loved.

“We fought hard alongside her every step of the way. And almost like magic, she started eating again after two days with us. We cared for her closely for a full week, and when she finally went home yesterday to her very happy owner, Mohlaudi, she was a completely different kitten – stronger, brighter, and full of life once more.”

What a heartwarming turnaround! The Cluny Animal Trust playfully said that little Lunah still had nine lives after all – we’re just so happy she started one of those nine lives with the BEST cat dad!

As the Trust puts it, such stories remind us that every life is worth fighting for and that the dedication of an animal welfare team can truly transform the lives of pets and their owners.

What started as a concerning post on a digital marketplace ended with three lives saved and a journey back to the wild where they belong.

Free State, South Africa (03 March 2026) – Behind every online advert for a wild tortoise is a creature stolen from its natural habitat – ripped from the very environment it depends on to survive. This growing wildlife injustice is one that the Wildlife Crime Information Network tirelessly fights to curb.

Every day, the team receives reports of tortoises and other wildlife illegally removed from the wild to be kept as pets. These animals are often deprived of water, food, and freedom, or are exploited for food and traditional medicine (muti).

Most recently, the team acted on a hotline report from a concerned citizen regarding an online advert offering three leopard tortoises for sale for R1,500.00. An investigation was launched immediately.

“These sellers are often difficult to trace, hidden behind fake profiles and vague locations, but we have learned that persistence pays off. Luckily, we managed to successfully identify the seller and his address in the Free State,” the organisation shared online.

From there, all the relevant information was forwarded to the Free State Nature Conservation authorities, who responded to the identified address in Allanridge.

“Upon arrival at the property, officials located the tortoises. After an educational discussion regarding wildlife legislation and the protected status of tortoises, the individual was issued a fine of R3,000 for keeping the animals without the required permits.”

The poor animals were removed from the premises and taken to a suitable facility where they could receive the care and nourishment they urgently needed.

The Wildlife Crime Information Network hopes that this case will serve as another reminder that the illegal possession and sale of wild tortoises not only violates the law but also causes immense suffering to animals that belong in the wild – not in backyards, cages, or online marketplaces.

“We urge the public to familiarise themself with the law and understand that all tortoises in South Africa are protected. Keeping, selling, or transporting indigenous wildlife in South Africa without the required permits is illegal and punishable by law.”

How to Help Protect These Vulnerable Animals

The general public is invited to support the organisation’s Every Tortoise Matters initiative, which strives to change the fate of illegally kept tortoises and safely return them to the wild, making sure they have a happy ending – “the slow walk to freedom”.

Your support can help facilitate more rescues like this and the fight against the illegal exploitation of these precious animals.

“We are grateful to everyone who has supported the Every Tortoise Matters initiative until now and who believed that the key to success lies in the dedication of all people involved in the protection of South Africa’s natural assets and heritage.”

There is nothing quite like the moment a child experiences independence for the very first time, and this month, that magic happened 85 times over.

Bloemfontein, South Africa (25 February 2026) – The incredible humans behind the Boikanyo the Dion Herson Foundation, The Paige Project, and the Rotary Club of Rosebank recently returned from the Free State Psychiatric Complex in Bloemfontein, after what the team could only describe as an extraordinary outreach!

Last month, Good Things Guy shared how the charities would be delivering buggy chairs to disabled children in rural Bloemfontein, and not only did it happen, but the impact was truly life-changing.

As part of the Chair’ished Children outreach, they hosted a Buggy Recycling Workshop for countless therapists and distributed mobility buggies to a province that, for the most part, has had very little access to them.

Children from some of the most rural, impoverished, and deeply affected communities were fitted with custom-made buggies – 85 children in total.

“We fitted very disabled children who were born with or live with cerebral palsy into very specialised chairs that we call buggies. We cannot afford to buy the buggies ourselves, so we do is collect from hospitals, predominantly in Gauteng. We bring them out into the rural areas where we renovate them totally. They are stripped, cleaned and repaired, and we buy new components for them. We bring children in to fit them,” shared Marilyn Bassin from Boikanyo.

With the guidance of a physiotherapist, each buggy is customised to fit a child depending on the unique support and comfort they require, because every child with cerebral palsy is affected differently.

One of the mothers, Dimakatso, who had brought her son, could hardly hold in her joy at receiving a buggy, expressing how it would afford them both the freedom to move around better and take walks without having to carry him on her back.

In many of these rural areas, a heartbreaking stigma still surrounds children with disabilities. It was visible and confronting. But alongside that, there was overwhelming goodness.

Another mother brought in a profoundly disabled little girl and explained that she was actually her niece. Her sister had passed away. When a therapist said the child was lucky to have such a caring aunt, the woman gently corrected her: “I am no longer her aunt. I am her mother.”

The oldest recipient was 66 years old.

“If a person is small enough to fit into a buggy, we will provide one, no matter their age. In these deep rural areas access is limited and need is immense.”

Elderly gogos carried heavy adult children into the hall. The relief, gratitude, and dignity these buggies brought them cannot be overstated.

Therapists from across the Free State worked tirelessly, phoning every contact they had and driving long distances to find patients and ensure no one missed out. Their dedication was nothing short of inspiring.

Everyone left the outreach moved, inspired and with full hearts.

No matter how high Colonel Moeketsi Phiri flies as a SAPS Air Wing Commander, his heart remains firmly planted in the community that raised him.

Free State, South Africa (15 February 2026) – When Moeketsi Phiri set out to join the national police, he always held where he came from close to his heart, regardless of how far his journey and accomplishments took him. Today, honoured as a SAPS Bloemfontein Air Wing Commander, Colonel Phiri still recognises the importance of going back and giving back to the place it all started – home.

Born and raised in Mahlatswetsa, Excelsior, returned to his roots with a heart of compassion and a commitment to uplift the next generation. Accompanied by his colleagues, he donated 54 pairs of school shoes to deserving learners at Mahlatswetsa Primary School.

The initiative was aimed at supporting learners from disadvantaged backgrounds to ensure they attend school with dignity and confidence.

According to SAPS, the handover ceremony was marked by excitement as learners received brand-new school shoes, a gesture that will not only ease the burden on their families but also motivate them to focus on their education.

Speaking during the handover, Colonel Phiri emphasised the importance of remembering where one comes from and giving back to the community that shaped one.

“I stand here today not only as a Bloemfontein Air Wing Commander but as a proud son of Mahlatswetsa. Education changed my life, and I believe that with the right support, these learners can achieve anything,” said Colonel Phiri.

The initiative was made possible through a partnership with retired Colonel Zabulon Moyana and his wife, retired Captain MaSamuel Moyana, and Excelsior SAPS, who also share a passion for community development. Together, they worked to ensure that the learners received the necessary support ahead of the new school term.

The school principal, Thabile Mmui, expressed heartfelt appreciation for the generous donation, highlighting that a proper school uniform, including shoes, plays a crucial role in boosting learners’ confidence and school attendance.

This act of kindness reflects the spirit of Ubuntu, the belief that “I am because we are.” By investing in the future of Mahlatswetsa Primary School learners, SAPS said Colonel Phiri and his partners have demonstrated that true leadership goes beyond official duties; it is about making a meaningful difference in the lives of others.

Animal welfare organisations would help every animal in need if they could, but without funding, even the biggest hearts can only stretch so far. Marcelle Scott understood that and rallied an army of support.

spar hero of the week

Free State, South Africa (12 February 2026) – In her little town of Ketsell, Marcelle Scott noticed a growing feral cat problem. Like so many towns across South Africa, the numbers are slowly climbing. Unsterilised cats that breed lead to more kittens being born into hardship, and there is no real system in place to stop the cycle.

Sterilising feral cats is the most effective way to stop that suffering before it starts. It’s one of the most important tools in animal welfare, and most organisations make a concerted effort to run sterilisation drives whenever they can.

The reality is that these campaigns depend entirely on funding. It costs money. Each procedure covers the surgery itself, a rabies vaccination, testing for diseases, as well as the practical costs of traps, transport and fuel.

“So, when Marcelle reached out to us for help, with a feral cat problem blossoming in the small town of Kestell in the Free State, we said we would help her, but she needed to help by raising the funds.” shares Cluny Animal Trust. “Again, this is where people who ask for help often opt out, always with excuses as to why they can’t raise funds, but Marcelle was more than up for the challenge!“

Wielding a letter from Cluny Animal Trust, Marcelle took to Facebook, approached local businesses, and asked community members to contribute directly to Cluny’s bank account to fund sterilisations. By the end of it, she had raised enough to cover 12 sterilisations! She also secured petrol sponsorship to transport the cats nearly 200 kilometres from Kestell to Fouriesburg and back.

“12 cats might not seem like a lot but sterilising and vaccinating them will make a huge difference to this small town. We wanted to shine a light on Marcelle for stepping up and taking on this challenge – we wish there were more people like her in the world!” shares Cluny.

This week, the team delivered traps to Marcelle and walked her through how to use them.

“Although Marcelle has raised the money for 12 cat steris, there are still many more that need to be caught and sterilised in Kestell, and if you would like to help support her with this project in any way, please reach out to [Cluny Animal Trust]”

Thanks to a collaboration formed by real-life guardian angels, 464 children can now walk into their classrooms with dignity, confidence, and the tools they need to succeed.

South Africa (04 February 2026) – While the Back-to-School frenzy may have settled, the sobering reality is that thousands of school children didn’t start the first day of Term 1 with all the required supplies and stationery ticked off their list.

Thankfully, for a few hundred of these learners, real-life guardian angels stepped in to ensure they had support in getting school-ready.

Through a powerful collaboration between international partner churches, Living Hope, the 67 Kids to School initiative (supported by South African College High School learners), and local businesses, 464 children facing desperate circumstances have recently been fully equipped for the year.

Across the Eastern Cape, Western Cape, and Free State, these learners received brand-new uniforms, backpacks, and essential stationery.

The impact goes beyond physical items. Picture a child who previously had only torn school shoes or just one decent shirt, or one who carried the silent embarrassment of not having new pens and exercise books while classmates proudly displayed theirs on the first day of school. This initiative was designed with these very youngsters in mind and has ensured that children can walk into school and classrooms with dignity, confidence, and the tools they need to succeed in this school year.

One principal from a beneficiary school shared his appreciation for the support:

“Thank you so much. Giving a school uniform means that a child can come to school, but it also gives confidence and pride that helps with learning. It means more than can be imagined.”

By removing the heavy burden of “not having enough,” 464 children are now free to focus on what truly matters: their education.

With backpacks full and spirits high, they are no longer sidelined by a lack of resources. Whether they are tackling daily classroom tasks, completing critical assessments, or sitting for tests, they now stand on equal footing with their peers.

The Cluny Animal Trust is moving beyond just dreaming of a better world for township animals. They are walking right into the heart of the community to build it!

Free State, South Africa (29 January 2026) – Every pet deserves to be loved, well-fed and treated with the best possible care, but sadly, many aren’t as fortunate. This is a reality that the Cluny Animal Trust is taking steps to address and change, one household at a time.

The veterinary welfare charity this week launched its first Door-to-Door campaign, which will see members visit homes in the township communities of Kgubetswana, Clarens, Mashaeng, and Fouriesburg to ensure that no pet is left behind.

“For a while now, we have been worried about animals falling through the proverbial cracks, and so we took some time to come up with a dedicated plan of action for 2026,” Cluny Animal Trust says.

Initially, one of the Trust’s members, Nico, would spend Tuesdays in Kgubetswana and Thursdays in Mashaeng townships to assist with vulnerable animals in need brought to him. However, a new strategy will see him spend the morning personally going door to door to check in on animals.

“This will also allow us to create a proper picture, like a census of where animals are and their circumstances. It is also a very good opportunity to educate animal owners about responsible pet ownership.”

In the afternoons, Nico will then set up a station, as he always has, at a designated point in the township, so that people can bring their animals to him.

“Yesterday [27 January], he went to eight homes. Good news, all of the cats and dogs were sterilised. A few of them required their vaccinations to be updated, so that was easy to do, and people paid towards them to be updated, which is also a positive sign.”

The Trust’s veterinary work is clear in the many success stories of concerned pet owners who are met with compassion and expertise, transforming desperation into relief.

While these door-to-door visits add to an already demanding workload, every step taken is a lifeline. It ensures that no animal is left in the shadows and that those who were once overlooked finally receive the care, dignity, and love they deserve.

For many children living with disabilities, the world has been limited to the confines of a bed or couch, but this Thursday, that discomfort ends as 114 custom buggies roll into remote Bloemfontein to provide the gift of dignity, relief, and newfound freedom.

Johannesburg, South Africa (26 January 2026) – Every child, no matter how far away they live, deserves to experience mobility, comfort, and dignity.

This belief is at the heart of the Boikanyo the Dion Herson Foundation, a charity that takes specialised wheelchairs (buggies) to children living with cerebral palsy in deep rural South Africa.

What started as a single idea has become a nationwide effort. The team behind this movement has travelled into rural communities across five provinces, restored close to 700 buggies, fitted children, supported families, and built partnerships that help them reach further each year.

More than just a chair, a buggy changes life for a child, their caregiver, their siblings, and their entire home. This mobility aid can ease pain, improve feeding, prevent pressure sores, and give a disabled child their first real chance to look around and be part of life.

And now, Boikanyo is starting the year strong, as they prepare to take 114 of these chairs to Bloemfontein on Thursday, 29 January! Together with The Paige Project and Rotary Club of Rosebank, these buggies will be distributed to children who are so disabled and so desperate.

“The catchment areas for this outreach stretch from Senekal to all 17 rural clinics/hospitals in Xhariep. On Friday, our most dedicated donor, Value Logistics, arrived with 2 x 8-ton trucks, which were left filled with life-changing mobility equipment,” Boikanyo explains.

This week, as this precious cargo reaches Bloemfontein, it brings an end to the days of children sitting slumped on floors or couches and caregivers straining to carry them on their backs. Now, that’s true impact.

‘When a picture speaks a thousand words….’

Free State, South Africa (21 January 2026) – Monday came with a difficult goodbye for the animal welfare team at Virginia SPCA. Teddy was with them for 15 years. He was their very first yard dog.

Just a year after the current team took office in 2010, Teddy joined the family. He was two at the time, and he spent the next fifteen years there, jumping on the laps of his animal welfare heroes. He followed them everywhere and watched them care for animals just like him – newcomer doggies who found great comfort in his presence, too.

“Teddy taught us patience. He taught us consideration. He showed us what true companionship really means,” Virginia SPCA shared. “Whenever a scared, confused dog arrived, Teddy was there. He would walk alongside the staff, gently helping new guests settle in, offering calm reassurance without needing a single word.”

This little shadow was a part of the team. He helped inspectors and carers understand how they could best serve animals who came through their doors.

“Whenever there was training to be done, Teddy was the willing participant—gracefully and generously offering himself so that we could learn and grow, and so that others could benefit.”

He was right there from the beginning, which made saying goodbye so difficult.

After 17 years, most of them spent with his SPCA family who loved him deeply, Teddy crossed the rainbow bridge.

“Now we must learn what life looks like without you, Teddy. We let you go knowing you lived a full, meaningful, and deeply loved life. From all of us at Team VSPCA, we salute you. Until we meet again.”

Field Assistant Peter Kamwaza has worked at the Virginia SPCA for years. He and Teddy were inseparable. The images below, published by the SPCA on Facebook, are of the two of them in their final moments together.

“We are publishing these images with permission of our Field Assistant Peter Kamwaza. Teddy and Peter moved as one. We are so sorry Peter – thank you for being a perfect friend to Teddy.”

When a picture speaks a thousand words.

These images show a side of animal welfare that we don’t see. The bonds that form and the friendships that last for life. The warmest welcomes and the most heartbreaking goodbyes.

South Africa’s animal welfare workers are heroes and we’ll always fly their flag.
