Ferdie now lives his best life in a wetland, catching bugs and doing what bullfrogs do best!
Gauteng, South Africa (19 March 2026) – For frog’s sake! We can’t stop smiling.
Life wasn’t all it croaked up to be for a bullfrog – affectionately named Ferdie by his rescuers – who got busted, breaking into a home in Brakpan. The call went through to the SPCA.
“It started with a frantic call from a local resident. The ‘intruder’ in question? A Giant Bullfrog. The resident was terrified, and at first, amidst the chaos of a busy shelter day, it felt like just another item on an endless to-do list.” they shared.
The SPCA attends to dozens of calls every day. Emergencies that demand urgent attention.
“But then, our team paused. We reminded ourselves that every creature deserves a chance at safety. So, the team geared up for a very special rescue mission.” they said.
And so Brakpan’s animal heroes climbed into their bakkie and put foot to reach Ferdie as fast as possible… because bullfrogs matter too.

“Ferdie was gently removed from the yard before he could find himself in any ‘unfortunate’ trouble. Once back at the branch, he got a full VIP check-up.” the SPCA said.
Then came the royal treatment!
“Our very own Inspector Mariska gave Ferdie a kiss to see if he’d transform into a Prince. The result? Still a frog.” they joked.
Ferdie – not a Brakpan prince but a healthy, happy bullfrog – is being released into a perfectly suited wetland area where he can live his best life, catch bugs, and do whatever it is bullfrogs do best, the SPCA says.
“Kindness is a language that even the smallest creatures can hear. Thank you to our amazing team for going the extra mile (and the extra hop) today.” the said.
It’s frogging awesome to see our animal heroes so committed to all creatures big and small.
