Safer passage for all as Friends of Table Mountain’s ‘Trail Apostles’ repair sections of poorly maintained trail on Devil’s Peak.

spar hero of the week

Cape Town, South Africa (30 March 2026) – Friends of Table Mountain’s trail crew, affectionately known as the ‘Trail Apostles,’ have been working on improving trails along Devil’s Peak.

The team has cleared overgrown sections, installed rock and log steps, and cleared water bars for the upcoming winter rains. They have also just brought safety to a section where, last year in June, a 53-year-old hiker had slipped and fallen 12 meters down, due to a poorly maintained trail.

“The hiker and her family were making their way from the Saddle to Oppelskop when they encountered the heavily vegetated section of trail. While attempting to step past the overgrowth she slipped from the narrow trail and tumbled twelve meters down the steep slope.” shared the Wilderness Search and Rescue (WSAR).

An urgent call was made to the WSAR and an extensive rescue followed. Paramedics and rescue climbers were flown to the scene and the hiker was carefully assessed and treated before being transferred into a rescue stretcher and hoisted via helicopter to a nearby landing zone where an ambulance rushed her off to hospital.

“We had been informed that a hiker slipped due to a poorly maintained trail, so this particular location was a priority for our team.” shared Friends of Table Mountain. “Upon inspection, it was evident that the overgrown path had forced the hiker onto an unstable detour along a crumbling edge that eventually dropped off into a significant cliff.”

The trail has now been restored and made far safer for all who use it.

“Thanks to the hard work and expertise of our dedicated team, the trail has now been restored…” it added. “We hope everyone enjoys the improved route and the peace of mind that comes with a safer passage.”

Friends of Table Mountain is the registered non-profit organisation that focuses on nature conservation, trail rehabilitation, and safety across the park, alongside lobbying for better management of Table Mountain National Park as a whole.

Lauretta Ngconozi walks into the halls of Groote Schuur Hospital every day not just to treat patients, but to give care, offer a listening ear and restore their hope.

spar hero of the week

Cape Town, South Africa (25 March 2026) – When life took Lauretta Ngcobozi on an unexpected journey of grief after losing her husband just one year into their marriage, she never imagined she would find her healing through her patients.

Becoming a nurse happened by chance when she started her career training as a caregiver.

“I was able to go and do my practical at Booth Memorial Hospital. The ward I was sent to was for patients receiving palliative care. Because of this, you do end up counselling the patients and their family members,” Lauretta reflects.

It was through comforting and conversing with her patients that she discovered a connection that poured into her cup as well.

“The pain I went through just pushed me to be close to other people who were also experiencing pain – I was really able to connect with the pain that the patients and their families were feeling,” she says.

Lauretta’s passion for caring and helping others was evident, leading to her employment at Booth Memorial Hospital. She was then presented with the opportunity to study to become a nurse in 2015.

“After that, I applied for a position at Groote Schuur Hospital and started there in 2016. I began in the Outpatient Clinics. I really enjoyed it because it was a new environment in a large institution, and I was exposed to many new things and learning how to deal with different people.”

The outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic changed her work environment, as many of the hospital’s clinics became non-operational. She ended up working in Groote Schuur’s G8 department, caring for oncology patients.

“I really love working here. There are times when it is hectic, but because I do it with love and passion, it makes a difference. Often, we have to counsel family members when the patients are very ill, and we often cry together because we grow close to the patients,” says Lauretta.

Looking back on her journey and how naturally she connects with her patients, Lauretta feels certain she was destined to be a nurse.

“I really am drawn to counselling, giving prayers to families, giving them hope.”

Even families who have sadly lost loved ones affirm that she has given them hope during their difficult times.

“When I help, I am not expecting anything; I am just doing it from my heart. I’d like to continue doing this work forever.”

Lauretta considers herself fortunate to practice at Groote Schuur and to touch lives the way she does. Though we suspect her patients and colleagues feel even luckier to have her!

Thank you, Lauretta, for everything you do and for spreading hope to those who need it most.

Through her ‘Endure For Her’ campaign, Suzy Whall is turning an intense endurance challenge into a meaningful mission supporting MOSAIC.

spar hero of the week

Cape Town, South Africa (19 March 2026) – At 21 years old, Suzy Whall is turning an intense endurance challenge into a deeply personal mission for change.

A civil engineering student at the University of Cape Town, Suzy is currently training for a Half Ironman. The gruelling race made up of a 1.9km swim, 90km cycle, and 21.1km run. But for her, this is about far more than physical endurance.

Through her campaign, Endure For Her, Suzy is dedicating every kilometre to survivors of gender-based violence, while raising funds for MOSAIC Training, Service & Healing Centre.

Her academic background has taught her to think in solutions-driven ways. Something that now impacts how she approaches challenges beyond the classroom.

“I think engineering has taught me a problem-solving mindset. Whenever I see an issue, I don’t really look at it as a challenge. I look at it as an opportunity… how can we fix this?”

That mindset has shaped how she views gender-based violence in South Africa, not as a distant crisis, but one that’s in everyday life and demands action.

“Especially as a woman, you might as well experience it almost every day. If you know three women, you probably know someone who’s experienced it on a deeper level.”

The idea for Endure For Her came during a training run. She realised the opportunity to turn a personal challenge into something more meaningful. Endurance carries both physical and symbolic meaning.

“It’s the endurance of the race, but also the endurance of women in South Africa… and the endurance it takes to fight this issue every day.”

Central to her campaign is her partnership with MOSAIC, an organisation she says stood out for its focus on long-term change.

“A lot of organisations do incredible work after violence has happened. But MOSAIC also focuses on education and prevention. That’s what inspired me.”

Balancing university and training is not an easy task. Her weekly routine includes everything from speed swims and hill sprints to long-distance cycling sessions lasting up to four hours.

Beyond the race, Suzy has also been working alongside MOSAIC to engage schools and communities, helping to open up conversations around gender-based violence. With a fundraising goal of R100,000, the campaign aims to support MOSAIC’s vital services. But for Suzy, success is not just about reaching a number or crossing a finish line.

“I’d love to actually see the impact… to see how one life has changed. That would give me goosebumps.”

Nick is spending his retirement years focused on giving back in one of the most meaningful ways – helping his Kenton community.

spar hero of the week

Kenton-on-Sea, South Africa (10 March 2026) – Nick Albrightson has spent a lifetime pushing his limits.

Twenty-one Comrades Marathons. Two Washies – the gruelling 160 km run from Port Alfred to East London. Two Dusi Canoe Marathons. The Midmar Mile. The Amashova Cycle Race from Pietermaritzburg to Durban. Three completions of the Mont Aux Sources 50 km Challenge. He even walked the Comrades route.

By any measure, it’s a remarkable list. But when Nick reflects on those years of endurance sport, it’s not the finish lines he talks about first – it’s the people who cheered him on along the way.

“These were some of the toughest challenges I’ve taken on, and I mention them because none of them were done alone. Along the way I was always supported by people who generously gave their time, encouragement, and help to see me through.” says Nick.

So when retirement arrived – or as Nick calls it, his “permanent holiday” – he found himself asking how he could give back.

“After retiring, I asked myself how I could give back to the community. The answer felt obvious: becoming an accredited First Responder with Gardmed.”

Now Nick serves as Head of the First Responder Team for Coastal Kindness, a volunteer-driven NPO based on the Sunshine Coast that focuses on community health and wellbeing. It works alongside local medical services and volunteers to strengthen healthcare and emergency response across the Kenton area with training, education and practical support.

It’s a mission that has been at their core since the very beginning, when COVID shook the world and brought out its helpers.

Kenton-on-Sea & Boesmans Tourism, who have shined a bright light on the organisation and volunteers like Nick, recognise the careful, life-saving work that goes into being a dedicated first responder.

“First Responders are often the first on scene in an accident or medical emergency, providing immediate care and support until advanced medical help – such as a paramedic or doctor – arrives. Their role can include assessing and stabilising patients, performing CPR or using an AED if needed, controlling bleeding, treating injuries, and offering reassurance to patients and their families in difficult moments.”

One of the greatest things about helpers coming together, is the community that forms in the process. That sense of connection is something Nick values deeply.

“One of the things I value most is the camaraderie among our First Responders. We support one another, freely share our time, skills, and resources, and work together for the greater good. It’s an incredible community to be part of, and I’m proud to serve.”

When the post went up celebrating Coastal Kindness and their community champion, that gratitude extended in the comments section, where suddenly, organisations and community members across town hopped in to honour Nick. Not only has he committed to his role as a first responder, his helping hands go far beyond…

He has volunteered in keeping the surrounding coast and its estuaries cared for, he has helped maintain road verges and collected trash along roadsides, and he has assisted his local Rotary Club! Thanks to people like him, who freely give their time, a community has better backup when it matters most.

“If I can save even one life, it makes everything worthwhile.”

With a mission as vast as the ocean they crossed, Shoneé, Katherine, Eva, and Georgina proved that when compassion meets courage, even the coldest waters can’t stop the determination to change a young life in need of all the support.

spar hero of the week

Cape Town, South Africa (05 March 2026) – After waiting over a month for the perfect conditions to embark on their  72-kilometre relay swim from Fish Hoek to Hout Bay, the Relay Mermaids finally dove into the chilly Atlantic last week – pushing through the elements, navigating the currents of the False Bay side and rounding the legendary Cape Point to reach the finish line.

“What began as a waiting game on 6th January finally became a reality on 26th February when, with just two days’ notice, we were given the green light for our fundraising swim. Everything depended on the right conditions, and we could not have been more blessed,” shares one of the swimmers, Shoneé Cornelissen.

The temperature was tolerable, and the waters lay mostly flat with only a gentle swell. However, nothing could have prepared the mermaids for the night swim around Cape Point.

“That stretch was the most daunting. The lighthouse beam kept circling in front of us, as if we were swimming endlessly toward a light we could never quite pass,” Shoneé recalls.

The darkness, fatigue, nausea and looming jellyfish put up quite a fight, but these mermaids knew exactly who they were swimming for, and that made all the difference in keeping the momentum going. After 24 gruelling hours in the water, they did it! A feat Georgina Smith says affirms would never have been possible without strong “teamship” and honesty with one another.

Katherine Persson confirmed that the relay swim was in accordance with channel rules to be ratified by the Cape Long Distance Swimming Association as an official swim.

As shared in our previous feature ahead of the event, the swim was dedicated to raising funds for 14-year-old Leandro Jantjies. A talented rugby player whose life was irrevocably changed when he broke his neck playing rugby. He’s now a recipient of The Chris Burger Petro Jackson Players’ Fund, which is providing lifelong physical, emotional, and financial support.

The R160,000 fundraising goal was already surpassed before the ladies even dove into the notoriously chilly ocean, with generous contributions amounting to an incredible R283,828!

“A BIG thank you to everyone who has helped the #relaymermaids to reach our funding target! All your generous contributions go to Leandro and to getting him back home to his family,” Katherine said.

Shoneé also thanked every person, business and community that rallied behind them, making the entire effort worthwhile.

“To our friends, family, and the broader community, thank you for following every tide and turn of this journey. Your encouragement carried us, and your generosity has made a meaningful difference in the life of Leandro and his family. We are deeply, deeply grateful.”

These amazing mermaids have once again proven that when compassion meets courage, life-changing things happen. We’re so proud of what they have achieved!

When your second chance also comes with ranger status. Two stray Africanis puppies have been adopted to serve on SAWC’s K9 Unit!

Phalaborwa, South Africa (25 February 2026) – This one ticks not one but two ‘good news’ boxes! Not only have two stray puppies found a home with wildlife heroes, they’re going to become K9 working dogs who protect wildlife.

In early February, the Southern African Wildlife College (SAWC) in collaboration with Helping All Animals in Rural Towns (HAART) paid a visit to the Phalaborwa Rescue Centre and left with two new rangers…

“We were looking for the next generation of conservation heroes. We are thrilled to announce that we’ve adopted two fearless, confident young pups into the SAWC K9 Unit!” SAWC shares.

Based on the edge of the Kruger National Park, the SAWC gives rangers and conservationists the boots-on-the-ground skills they need to protect Africa’s wild spaces. Over 30 years, they’ve trained over 23,000 people from 60 countrie into world-class leaders in everything from anti-poaching to ecosystem management.

Africanis dogs aren’t traditionally trained as working dogs – like their fellow coonhounds in SAWC’s K9 Unit – but they happen to be incredibly intelligent and resilient – both great traits for the job.

“We are constantly innovating. While our coonhounds are legendary, we are excited to see how these local ‘talents’ compare in critical roles…” the SAWC adds.

Freddie and Soul will be trained in detection work, line dog duties and pack dog roles.

“They are already adapting incredibly well to their new home. Right now, it’s all about socialisation, but training begins in earnest next week. We are champing at the bit to see what these two can do!”

From rescue pups to rangers! It’s a joy to see animal welfare and conservation organisations work together to give stray dogs a second chance, and in the same breath, wildlife better protection.

“We are so proud to be collaborating with Southern African Wildlife College with the adoption of little Soul and Freddie who both demonstrate the true Africanis intelligence, survival skills, scent detection, incredible social skills, all round the perfect dogs for home or in this case, we hope with the guidance of their Rangers and great training, they will be able to be Protectors of Wildlife.” comments HAART.

With bags overflowing, spirits high and funky costumes, the Children’s Hospital Trust team rolled up to the Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital to celebrate 32 years of the Trust’s life-changing impact!

spar hero of the week

Cape Town, South Africa (15 February 2026) – On Friday, the providers of world-class healthcare to children in need, The Children’s Hospital Trust (CHT), celebrated their 32nd birthday!

And what better way to mark this milestone than by bringing pure joy to the children who motivate everything they do. The colourful team rolled up with excitement and overflowing party bags, toys to spark some smiles, treats to sweeten the day, and love to wrap around every child at the Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital today.

“Seeing eyes widen with excitement really made this day so special,” the Trust said.

Established in 1994, the Trust is built on the belief that every child should have access to the highest quality healthcare services they need close to their homes. To feel safe and comforted during times of illness and trauma; to be cared for in a nurturing environment that is supportive of patient, family and staff wellbeing; and to be cared for by skilled and supported healthcare professionals equipped with the infrastructure and equipment needed to provide optimal care.

Working in partnership with the Western Cape Department of Health, UCT Department of Paediatrics and Child Health, the Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital (RCWMCH) and powered by the generosity of donors, the Trust has invested over R1 billion since 1994 towards improving public health infrastructure, training specialist paediatric health workers, and supporting the establishment of child public health projects.

Good Things Guy has shared numerous stories that highlight the invaluable impact CHT has had on young lives, from ensuring Hlelo received the treatment for his heart condition, and being part of Natalie’s journey after receiving shinbone surgery, to building state-of-the-art burns care units – the charity has filled a healthcare gap for countless children in their time of need.

We join them in celebrating 32 years of impact, compassion, transformation, and the incredible donors who make it all possible.

Animal welfare organisations would help every animal in need if they could, but without funding, even the biggest hearts can only stretch so far. Marcelle Scott understood that and rallied an army of support.

spar hero of the week

Free State, South Africa (12 February 2026) – In her little town of Ketsell, Marcelle Scott noticed a growing feral cat problem. Like so many towns across South Africa, the numbers are slowly climbing. Unsterilised cats that breed lead to more kittens being born into hardship, and there is no real system in place to stop the cycle.

Sterilising feral cats is the most effective way to stop that suffering before it starts. It’s one of the most important tools in animal welfare, and most organisations make a concerted effort to run sterilisation drives whenever they can.

The reality is that these campaigns depend entirely on funding. It costs money. Each procedure covers the surgery itself, a rabies vaccination, testing for diseases, as well as the practical costs of traps, transport and fuel.

“So, when Marcelle reached out to us for help, with a feral cat problem blossoming in the small town of Kestell in the Free State, we said we would help her, but she needed to help by raising the funds.” shares Cluny Animal Trust. “Again, this is where people who ask for help often opt out, always with excuses as to why they can’t raise funds, but Marcelle was more than up for the challenge!“

Wielding a letter from Cluny Animal Trust, Marcelle took to Facebook, approached local businesses, and asked community members to contribute directly to Cluny’s bank account to fund sterilisations. By the end of it, she had raised enough to cover 12 sterilisations! She also secured petrol sponsorship to transport the cats nearly 200 kilometres from Kestell to Fouriesburg and back.

“12 cats might not seem like a lot but sterilising and vaccinating them will make a huge difference to this small town. We wanted to shine a light on Marcelle for stepping up and taking on this challenge – we wish there were more people like her in the world!” shares Cluny.

This week, the team delivered traps to Marcelle and walked her through how to use them.

“Although Marcelle has raised the money for 12 cat steris, there are still many more that need to be caught and sterilised in Kestell, and if you would like to help support her with this project in any way, please reach out to [Cluny Animal Trust]”

Give this man a Bells! Louis Grant is marking his milestone Midmar Mile by raising funds for children with cancer.

spar hero of the week

KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa (05 February 2026) – This weekend, Louis will smash his 25th Midmar Mile.

Celebrating the iconic swim, he’s decided to use it to support kids who are facing far tougher battles.

He’s raising R2,500 for Cupcakes of Hope. So far, supporters have helped reach 84% of the goal for his fundraiser swim.

The Midmar Mile is a one-mile (1.6km) open-water swim held every year at Midmar Dam in KwaZulu-Natal. It brings together thousands from across the country – pros and everyday people all the same – to swim the iconic stretch of water. For some, it’s a once-off challenge. For Louis, it’s chilled. He’s done it 24 times.

This time, every lap comes with purpose.

Cupcakes of Hope is a South African non-profit that supports children fighting cancer and their families. Over the past year, they helped with nearly 2000 financial assistance requests, delivered thousands of care packs to paediatric oncology wards, and made sure 80 children were celebrated with special birthday surprises.

Louis is keeping his fundraising simple, inviting donations of R25 or R250. And that’s why it’s going to work.

Not every fundraiser needs huge targets. Even the smallest contribution can make a difference – that’s what gets hope swimming.

An unconscious police officer was brought ashore after a high school student, James, spotted him floating face down in the water. He had no pulse and wasn’t breathing. What James did next saved his life!

spar hero of the week

Eastern Cape, South Africa (27 January 2026) – Grade 11 student at Dainfern College in Johannesburg, James Smith, has earned his hero badge after saving a police officer.

It happened over the school holidays, while he was visiting Kei Mouth in the Eastern Cape. Strolling the beach, James’ sharp eye noticed someone floating in the water, face down. He immediately alerted lifeguards, who brought the unconscious man ashore.

“As the man was brought ashore with no pulse and no signs of breathing after being underwater for several minutes, James sprang into action,” shares James’ school, Dainfern College.

Drawing on what he had learned from a first aid programme at school, James began CPR on the unconscious police officer while rallying emergency response efforts and assisting lifeguards and paramedics on scene.

“James performed CPR for an extended period, helped manage airway support and ensured an AED was brought to the beach and emergency services were called,” the school shares.

Even under pressure, he stayed calm, acted quickly, and relied on what he had learned in training.

“Thanks to his calm leadership, quick thinking and medical training, the police officer was stabilised and later made a remarkable recovery, with no neurological damage,” the school shares.

James deserves his hero badge. Local police in Kei Mouth have extended their deepest appreciation, he’s been invited to assist with lifeguard training, and he’s been honoured with a first-of-its-kind award!

Dainfern

“In recognition of his courage, James has been formally thanked by the local police, invited to assist with lifeguard training, and honoured by the local municipality — becoming the first recipient of the Freedom of the Town award in the region.”

After the incident, James was reunited with the man he saved. He also received praise upon returning back to school – the first assembly for 2026 came with a special recognition for his bravery.

“James is an active member of the Dainfern College First Aid programme and volunteers extensively in his community. His actions are a powerful reminder of the life-saving impact of first aid training and the values of service, leadership and courage we strive to instil in our students.” the school shared.
