The provisional 68-member squad features a mix of Olympic medallists, national record holders, and in-form athletes as South Africa builds towards the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.
Johannesburg, South Africa (25 March 2026) – With just over 120 days to go until the Commonwealth Games 2026, South Africa’s athletics stars are already lacing up, and this provisional squad is anything to go by, it’s going to be a seriously exciting ride.
Athletics South Africa has unveiled a 68-member squad for the showpiece event in Glasgow, blending proven champions with rising talent.
Leading the charge is sprint king Akani Simbine, who last year reminded everyone exactly who he is with a powerful second-place finish at the Diamond League final in Zurich.
Then there’s Adriaan Wildschutt, fresh off a history-making run in New York, where he became the first South African to win the NYC Half-Marathon.
And in the women’s ranks, Glenrose Xaba has been unstoppable, dominating the SPAR Women’s Challenge series with wins across all five races.
Of course, experience is just as important. The squad includes all three of South Africa’s track and field medallists from the previous Games, with Simbine joined by long jumper Jovan van Vuuren and 400m hurdler Zeney van der Walt. Nine national record holders are in the mix, including world record holder Wayde van Niekerk, who is set to compete in the 200m, alongside names like Marione Fourie, Luvo Manyonga, and Miné de Klerk.
Add Olympic silver medallist Jo-Ane du Plessis and world indoor champion Prudence Sekgodiso into the mix, and suddenly this squad starts to look very dangerous.
The final team will still be confirmed closer to the Games by South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee, but for now, the talent is there and the form is building.
There’s still work to be done before the final team is confirmed, but the early signs suggest South Africa’s athletics squad is in a strong place heading into the Games.
